Chapter 3

It was late at night when Selena arrived at her childhood home, an old cottage that stood on the outskirts of town.

The building was small, surrounded by tall trees that held it in silence. The peeling walls and creaking wooden windows brought back memories that weighed on her heart.

Selena slowly opened the door, the sound of creaking hinges breaking the silence. The air inside was damp, with the scent of old wood wafting through. The small dining table in the corner of the room was still standing, just as it had been the last time she had left this place all those years ago.

She dropped her bag to the floor, took a deep breath, and let the memories wash over her.

Memories of the Past

Selena was only 14 years old then. She sat at the same dining table, listening to her father speak in a firm but loving voice.

"We have to go, Selena," her father said, gently holding her small hand. "There are people who don't want us here. But don't be afraid. No matter what happens, you have to stay strong."

She didn't fully understand it at the time, but that night was the beginning of a life full of uncertainty.

A few days later, the house was attacked. Gunmen came, smashed the windows, and broke in. Selena’s father protected her, but the attack tore her family apart. He was shot, leaving her with one final message: “Always believe in yourself, Selena. The truth will find you someday.”

Selena fled into the woods behind the house. She hid for hours, the only sound of leaves rustling in the wind for company. That night, she promised herself that she would never be weak again.

Back to the Present

Selena opened her eyes, pulling herself back to the present. The memory, painful as it was, was a reminder of why she had survived this long. She knew that the world was never truly safe, but she also knew that she had never given up.

As she walked into the living room, her eyes fell on an old clock hanging on the wall. It was one of the few remaining items from her past—a clock her father had used to fix.

For no apparent reason, Selena approached the clock. Her hand touched the old wooden frame, and she noticed something strange.

There was a small engraving on the back of the clock, something she had never noticed before.

Carefully, she examined the engraving and found that it was a hidden button. Selena pressed the button, and a small compartment at the bottom of the clock opened, revealing an old scroll.

Her heart pounded as she unrolled the scroll. Her father's stern handwriting filled the small page:

"Selena, if you find this, then danger is near. There are people who will stop at nothing until they get what they want. They are everywhere, even among your friends. Trust no one but your instincts. Find Vaughn—he is the key to stopping all of this."

Selena was stunned. That name—Vaughn—was the same name as the mysterious man who had called her last night. Was this a coincidence, or had it been planned all along?

A Stronger Wound

The night wore on, but Selena could not sleep. She sat on the living room floor, clutching the scroll tightly. Her heart was filled with questions, but also with a growing determination.

She thought about everything she had been through—the betrayal, the loss, the constant threat. But none of it had made her give up. Instead, it had made her stronger, more prepared to face whatever came.

Selena knew that what awaited her would be far greater and more dangerous than anything she had ever faced. But she was not afraid. With her father’s message in her hand, she vowed that this time, she would finish what her family had started.
