Chapter 5

Now he had asked me, straight to my face, in that flat voice that left no room for refusal, to surrender that gown to Vittoria.

My fingers curled inward, nails digging so deep into my palms they nearly drew blood. The pain was a small, private thing, the only sound I allowed myself in a house where every wall had ears and every silence was a kind of testimony. Outside the tall windows the snow had begun to fall over the Gilberti estate, soft and patient, swallowing the iron gates and the dark shapes of the men who patrolled them. Somewhere below, in the smoke-warm parlor, a record turned low. None of it touched the cold that had taken up residence in my chest.

I looked at Salvatore's expression, so utterly matter-of-fact, as though he had asked me to pass the salt rather than hand over the one beautiful thing in this world that had ever been made for me alone. He pressed a flat palm to his stomach, the gesture I had once mistaken for impatience, and waited. I pressed my thumb against the faded scar on my forearm, the way I always did when I swallowed something I refused to let him see, and I slowly nodded.

"Fine. I'll have someone deliver it tomorrow."

Salvatore held my gaze for a long moment, dark eyes searching mine for some crack, some tremor, some last appeal he could refuse the pleasure of denying. He found nothing. The stillness in the room thickened until I could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the hall, each stroke landing like a coin dropped on marble. Then he pushed the door open and walked out, and the cold air of the corridor moved past him into the room.

From the hallway came the soft murmur of his voice, gentle and soothing, the voice he had never once in seven years turned on me. He was comforting Vittoria, whispering reassurances I could not make out and did not need to. Then the click of the neighboring room's door shutting behind them, soft and final as a lock turning on a vault. The Don of the Gilberti Family had made his choice, and the whole house had felt it, the way men in a sit-down feel a verdict pass before a single word is spoken.

I turned and walked to the desk. The carpet drank my footsteps. I pulled open the drawer, the brass handle cold against my fingers, and took out a desk calendar, its leather cover worn soft at the corners from years of my hands.

I picked up a red marker and drew a heavy X over today's date. The ink bled at the edges, dark as something spilled. My hand did not shake.

Two more days until Lorenzo came for me.

I peeled off the wine-stained gown, the silk sliding from my shoulders like shed skin, and stepped into the bathroom. The tile was cold beneath my bare feet, the air still carrying the ghost of Vittoria's perfume that clung to everything in this house now, sweet and cloying as a lie told too often.

Warm water streamed over my body. I let it run until the cold in my bones loosened its grip, until the steam fogged the glass and softened the world into something I could bear to stand inside.

I stared at the pale face in the mirror, half-lost behind the mist, a woman I was only beginning to recognize again.

Salvatore Gilberti, seven years ago you pulled me from that burning wreck on the coast road and gave me a second life. You wiped the blood from my face with your own handkerchief and told me I was safe now, that no one in Harbor Bay would dare touch what belonged to the Gilberti name.

For seven years, I took knives meant for you. I stood between you and the men who came in the dark, and I have the scar to prove it. I handled the things you could not let see the light of day, the debts and the bodies and the whispered arrangements that kept the Family standing while you played the gentleman. I ran the Gilberti household so you never had to think of it, so your soldiers ate and your secrets stayed buried and your enemies found only locked doors.

We stopped owing each other a long time ago.

The next morning came gray and silent, the snow still falling, the estate hushed under its white weight. I followed Salvatore's instructions and had one of the house associates carry the Starlight couture gown down the corridor to Vittoria's room, folded in tissue as if it still deserved that care.

Vittoria made a point of having her door left wide open. She wanted to be seen. In this world, where respect was the only currency that could not be laundered, she had decided that taking what was mine in plain sight was its own kind of coronation.

As I passed through the hallway, I saw her in front of the gilt mirror, twirling in the gown that clearly did not fit her, the fabric bunching and pulling in all the wrong places, gaping where it had been cut to my body and no one else's. The crystal beadwork caught the morning light and threw it back at her, and she smiled at her reflection like a woman trying on someone else's life.

She picked up a pair of scissors. Her fingers brushed the diamond drop at her throat first, twisting it a beat too soon, the way they always reached for the loot before she had earned it. Then, without a second's hesitation, she cut away the most intricate panel of crystal-beaded tulle from the hem, the very piece that had taken a master's hands three months to set by candlelight. The fabric fell to the floor in a glittering ruin.

"This design is so dated. It'll look better shorter." Vittoria pouted at the maid standing beside her, her voice light and careless, performing the spoiled darling for an audience of one frightened woman.

The maid stole a cautious glance toward me in the doorway and said nothing. In this house, silence was not just manners. It was survival. Omerta did not only protect the men.

I didn't stop. I didn't let my eyes linger on the wreckage of the only thing in this world that had been made for me. I pressed my thumb once more to the scar on my forearm, held the feeling down where it could not betray me, and I walked straight to the kitchen.

Salvatore had drunk heavily the night before. I had heard the decanters move in the study long after midnight, the low laughter, the clink of crystal. He had a serious stomach condition, the kind that doubled a lesser man over and that he hid from everyone but me, and after every night of heavy drinking he needed a bowl of the specially prepared herbal stomach-healing soup. I knew the recipe by heart, the way I knew the location of every safe in the house and the name of every soldier who would lie for him.

I reached for the pot. Old habit. Seven years of it, steeped into my hands like the scent of the herbs themselves.

Then I stopped, my fingers resting on the cold copper, and I stood very still in the silent kitchen while the snow came down outside the window and the whole of the Gilberti estate held its breath around me.
