Chapter 6

For seven years, I had been the one to brew it for him by hand. No associate, no cook, no woman the Gilberti Family kept on its payroll had ever been permitted to touch that clay pot. Only me.

I stood at the great iron range in the back kitchen of the estate, watching the dark liquid roll and simmer behind the glaze, breathing in the bitter herbal steam that had become as familiar to me as my own pulse. Outside the window the first snow of the season pressed against the glass, soft and indifferent, muffling the world the way omertà muffled everything inside these walls.

This was the last time I would ever make this for him.

I ladled the soup into a thermal flask with the same care I had used a thousand nights before, set the flask on a silver tray, and carried it down the long corridor toward Salvatore's study. The obsidian floor threw back a cold sheen beneath my feet. Somewhere deep in the house a grandfather clock counted off the seconds, patient as a man waiting to collect a debt.

The study door stood slightly ajar. A thin blade of lamplight fell across the threshold. From inside I could hear Salvatore speaking low with his Consigliere and childhood friend, Matteo Bruno. The two of them had grown up in the same crooked alleys of Harbor Bay, had been made on the same night, had spilled blood beside each other before either of them owned a name worth fearing. If anyone in this Family still dared speak plainly to the Don, it was Matteo.

I was about to raise my hand and knock when Matteo's voice carried through the gap, clear as a struck glass.

"Salvatore, don't you think you went too far this time? You took back the jade ring, you gave away the Matriarch's necklace, and now you've handed Adriana's Starlight gown to Vittoria. That woman followed you for seven years. She'd have stepped in front of a bullet for you. Are you really trying to put her out in the cold?"

My hand froze in the air. I stood perfectly still, the tray balanced against my body, and I did not breathe. The corridor seemed to narrow around me, the silence thickening until I could hear the faint hiss of the radiators and the deliberate tick of that distant clock.

Then Salvatore's voice came, and it was cold, detached, the voice he used when he had already decided a man's fate and was merely informing the room of it.

"Where would she go? She's an orphan who can't even remember the name she was born with. Outside the Gilberti Family, she has nothing and no one. There's no other house that would take her in."

A pause. The slow exhale of a man satisfied with his own logic.

"I've indulged her too much these seven years. Her temper's slipped its leash. Vittoria's only just come back to me, and Adriana needs to remember her place beneath this roof."

His next words came down soft and even, more terrible for their calm. "I'm going to strip that pride off her, bone by bone, until she understands exactly who the master of this house is. Once she accepts it. Once she falls back into line, I'll keep a room for her here. She'll be fed. She'll be clothed. She ought to be grateful for that much."

I heard Matteo move. I knew the sound, even through the door. He had taken his glasses from his face and was folding them slowly, the one unguarded thing that careful man ever allowed himself, the small ritual that always came just before he told the Don a truth the Don did not want to hear.

"You keep grinding her down like this," Matteo said, quiet, weighted, "aren't you afraid she'll actually give up on you? Even loyalty has a floor, Sal. Even hers."

Salvatore let out a laugh. Low. Dripping with contempt. The kind of laugh that made grown soldiers find somewhere else to look.

"Give up? The greatest skill Adriana Conti has ever possessed is winding herself around me like a vine around a wall. She doesn't know how to live without something to cling to. She can't survive without me. She never could."

The tray tilted in my hands.

A few drops of scalding soup slid over the rim and struck the back of my hand. The skin swelled red instantly, blistering where the heat bit in. I watched it happen the way I might have watched it happen to a stranger.

I didn't feel a thing.

There were a thousand small wounds beneath that one, and the largest of them did not show on the skin at all. Seven years. Seven years of brewing this bitter soup at this same stove while the snow came and went outside that window. Seven years of telling myself that a man who took everything from a woman must, somewhere underneath it, value what he was taking. A vine. That was the whole of my worth to him. A green thing with no root of its own, fit only to be torn down when it had grown inconvenient.

I pressed my thumb hard against the faded scar on my forearm, the old ridge of it, and held it there until the trembling in my hand went still.

I looked at that carved wooden door, still slightly ajar, still leaking its blade of light across the cold floor, and I did not knock. I set the silver tray down on the console table outside the study, gently, so the flask would not so much as rattle.
