Chapter 3

The taxi pulled away from SeaTac airport, leaving Chelsea standing on the curb with her arms wrapped around herself like she was trying to hold her own pieces together. Through the rear window, I watched her figure grow smaller until she disappeared entirely, swallowed by the gray Seattle morning.

"You sure about this, miss?" the driver asked, glancing at me in the rearview mirror. "JFK's a long haul from here."

"I'm sure," I said, settling back into the worn vinyl seat. The envelope containing my boarding pass crinkled in my lap—one-way ticket to New York, purchased with Nathan's money. The irony wasn't lost on me.

Chelsea's parting words echoed in my mind: "New York eats people alive, you know that, right?" Her voice had been tight with worry, her usual cheerful demeanor replaced by something that looked dangerously close to fear.

"Let it try," I'd told her, and I'd meant it.

Now, thirty thousand feet above the country I was crossing for the first time in my life, I pressed my face to the airplane window and watched America unfold beneath me like a patchwork quilt. Somewhere down there was the life I'd built and abandoned. Somewhere ahead was whatever came next.

The plane began its descent as the sun set, and Manhattan rose from the darkness like something out of a fever dream. Lights scattered across the cityscape in impossible patterns, as if someone had overturned a jewelry box and let diamonds spill across black velvet. The Chrysler Building pierced the sky like a silver needle, and the Empire State Building glowed purple against the night.

I pressed my palm against the cool window, my breath fogging the glass. This city looked like it could swallow a person whole—or make them into something entirely new.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to New York," the pilot's voice crackled through the intercom. "Local time is 9:47 PM."

I closed my eyes and felt something shift inside my chest. Not fear, exactly. More like hunger.

Three weeks later, I stood outside the gleaming entrance of Bergdorf Goodman, clutching a leather portfolio that contained my entire future. Inside were photographs of the jewelry pieces I'd spent every waking hour creating since arriving in the city—delicate chains that caught light like captured starfire, earrings that moved like liquid silver, a necklace centerpiece that had taken me four days to perfect.

The morning sun reflected off the store's windows, turning them into mirrors that showed me my own reflection: sharp black blazer, hair pulled back in a severe bun, the kind of professional armor I'd never needed in Seattle. I looked like I belonged here. I felt like an impostor.

The buyer, a woman named Patricia with steel-gray hair and glasses that probably cost more than my rent, barely glanced at my pieces before sliding them back across the polished conference table.

"The craftsmanship is adequate," she said, her tone suggesting adequate was an insult. "But we can't take risks on unknown brands. Our customers expect names they recognize."

I gathered my photographs with hands that didn't shake, though I wanted them to. "Everyone starts somewhere."

"Not here," Patricia said, already looking past me toward her next appointment. "Try some of the smaller boutiques in Brooklyn. They're more... flexible with their standards."

The elevator ride down felt like falling.

By noon, I'd been rejected by Saks, Tiffany & Co., and three smaller galleries in SoHo. The same words followed me from building to building: "No brand recognition." "Too risky." "Come back when you're established."

I found myself on Fifth Avenue, portfolio heavy in my hands, watching people stream past in designer clothes and confident strides. Everyone seemed to know exactly where they belonged, exactly what they were worth. I felt invisible, like I was watching life through glass.

The coffee shop on the corner of 58th Street looked warm and anonymous—the kind of place where I could disappear for a while and figure out what came next. I ordered a latte and found a small table near the window, spreading my rejection letters across the surface like evidence of my own inadequacy.

That's when I noticed her.

She sat at the table beside mine, an elderly woman with silver hair arranged in a perfect chignon and a navy coat that whispered expensive even to my untrained eye. Her hands were elegant, manicured but not ostentatious, and she held her teacup with the kind of unconscious grace that spoke of a lifetime of good breeding.

But it was her purse that caught my attention—a small clutch of midnight blue leather with a family crest embossed in gold. The design was intricate, beautiful, and somehow familiar in a way that made my chest tighten.

I was so absorbed in studying the crest that I didn't notice her watching me until she spoke.

"That's a lovely bracelet," she said, her voice carrying the faintest trace of an accent I couldn't place. "May I?"

I looked down at my wrist, where a thin silver chain caught the afternoon light. I'd made it months ago during one of my late-night crafting sessions, when my hands needed something to do and my mind needed to quiet. The pattern was complex—interwoven links that created a subtle geometric design, almost like a code written in metal.

"Thank you," I said, extending my arm slightly so she could see it better. "I made it myself."

The woman leaned forward, and I watched her expression change. The polite interest faded, replaced by something sharper, more intense. Her fingers trembled slightly as she reached toward my wrist, then stopped herself.

"That technique," she said quietly. "That particular weaving pattern. Where did you learn it?"

I pulled my hand back, suddenly self-conscious. "I didn't learn it anywhere. It's just something I... figured out, I guess. I've always made jewelry this way."

The woman's face had gone pale, and she was staring at me with an intensity that made my skin prickle. "What did you say your name was?"

"I didn't. But it's Nora. Nora Russell."

The teacup slipped from her fingers, clattering against the saucer. Coffee splashed across the white tablecloth, but she didn't seem to notice.

"That bracelet design," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You say you created it yourself?"

"Yes, I—"

"No, dear." Her eyes were bright with unshed tears. "That's a Russell family technique. It's been passed down through generations, but only Russell blood carries the instinct for it. Only family members can create that pattern without being taught."

The coffee shop seemed to tilt around me. The sounds of conversation and clinking cups faded to a distant hum.

"Russell?" I repeated. "That's... that's my last name."
