Chapter 4

The woman reached across the small space between our tables and gently touched my wrist, her fingers tracing the silver links I'd woven without thinking, without knowing.

"I know, child," she said softly. "I'm Eleanor Russell. And I believe you might be my granddaughter."

The world tilted on its axis.

I stared at Eleanor Russell—my grandmother, if what she was saying could possibly be true—as she dabbed at the spilled coffee with a cloth napkin. Her hands shook slightly, but her eyes never left my face, studying me with an intensity that made my skin feel transparent.

"That's impossible," I whispered. "My parents... they were nobody. They ran a tiny jewelry repair shop in Seattle. They died when I was eight."

Eleanor's expression softened, pain flickering across her features like shadows. "Your father was David Russell. My son." She reached into her purse and pulled out a worn photograph, sliding it across the table toward me. "Does this look familiar?"

The man in the photograph had my eyes. The same unusual shade of green, the same slightly upturned corners that made me look like I was always on the verge of smiling even when I wasn't. His hair was darker than mine, but the shape of his face, the line of his jaw—it was like looking at a masculine version of myself.

"David fell in love with your mother when he was twenty-five," Eleanor continued, her voice growing distant with memory. "Sarah Chen. She was beautiful, intelligent, kind—everything I should have wanted for my son. But she wasn't from our world. Her family owned a small jewelry shop, and my husband... my late husband believed that Russell blood shouldn't be diluted by trade."

My fingers traced the edge of the photograph. "So you kicked him out."

"I didn't." Eleanor's voice cracked. "But I didn't fight hard enough to stop it either. My husband gave David an ultimatum: give up Sarah or give up the family. David chose love." She smiled sadly. "He always was the romantic."

The coffee shop buzzed around us, but I felt like we were sitting in a bubble of silence. Nothing made sense. My quiet, gentle parents who'd taught me to string beads and set stones in their cluttered back room—they'd been part of some jewelry dynasty?

"They changed their name to Chen," Eleanor said, as if reading my thoughts. "Started over completely. I hired private investigators for years, but David was thorough. He didn't want to be found."

"Then how—"

"The bracelet." Eleanor leaned forward, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "That weaving technique has been passed down through Russell women for over two hundred years. It's not something you can learn from a book or a class. It's instinctive, coded into our blood somehow. When I saw you wearing it, I knew."

I looked down at my wrist, at the delicate silver links I'd created without thinking. The pattern that had always felt right under my fingers, natural as breathing.

"I've been searching for you for thirty years," Eleanor whispered. "Ever since David and Sarah died in that car accident. The investigators found the crash report, but no mention of a child. I thought... I thought I'd lost you forever."

The photograph blurred as tears filled my eyes. All those years of feeling like I didn't quite belong anywhere, like there was some essential piece of myself that was missing—and here it was, sitting across from me in a coffee shop on Fifth Avenue.

"The Russell family built an empire," Eleanor said, her voice gaining strength. "We've been creating jewelry for New York's elite for six generations. Politicians, socialites, Broadway stars—they all come to us. But the company has been struggling lately. We've lost our edge, our innovation. We need fresh blood. We need you."

I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand, trying to process everything. "What are you saying?"

Eleanor reached across the table and covered my hand with hers. Her skin was soft but her grip was firm, decisive. "I'm saying come home, Nora. Take your rightful place in the Russell legacy. The company, the reputation, the resources—it's all yours by birthright."

For a moment, I let myself imagine it. Walking into those gleaming showrooms that had rejected me this morning, not as a desperate outsider begging for a chance, but as a Russell. Having access to the finest materials, the most skilled craftsmen, the kind of connections that could launch a career overnight.

But then I thought about Nathan, about how easily he'd dismissed everything I'd built as quaint and rustic. About the way Patricia at Bergdorf's had looked through me like I was nothing.

"I don't want charity," I said finally. "I don't want to succeed because of a name I never knew I had."

Eleanor smiled, and for the first time, I saw something fierce and proud in her expression. "Good. That's exactly what I hoped you'd say." She leaned back in her chair, studying me with calculating eyes. "Here's what I propose: one year. Prove that you can revitalize Russell Jewelry, bring us back to the top of New York's jewelry scene. Do it your way, with your vision, but do it under the Russell name. If you succeed, the company is yours completely. If you fail..."

"If I fail?"

"Then you walk away, and we never speak of this again."

I stared at her, this elegant stranger who claimed to be my grandmother. The offer was everything I'd dreamed of and everything I'd sworn I didn't want, wrapped up in one impossible package.

"Why?" I asked. "Why give me this chance? You don't even know me."

Eleanor's eyes softened again, and she reached out to touch my cheek gently. "Because you have your father's eyes and your mother's determination. Because you've survived on your own for twenty-six years and built something beautiful from nothing. And because that bracelet proves you're a Russell, whether you knew it or not."

I closed my eyes, feeling the weight of the decision settling on my shoulders. When I opened them again, Eleanor was watching me with patient expectation.

"I don't need your money," I said slowly, my voice growing stronger with each word. "But I need this opportunity. One year from today, I'll make the Russell name mean something again in this city. I'll make it shine so bright that every jewelry house in New York will know exactly who we are."

Eleanor's smile was radiant. "That's my granddaughter. That's Russell blood speaking."

She was reaching for her purse when the coffee shop door chimed, and a man in an expensive charcoal suit walked in. He was perhaps forty, with prematurely silver hair and sharp features that spoke of careful breeding. His eyes swept the room until they found Eleanor, and something cold flickered across his face when he saw me sitting with her.

Eleanor stiffened almost imperceptibly. "We should go," she murmured, suddenly urgent. "There's so much to discuss, so much to show you."

But as we gathered our things, I caught the man watching us in the reflection of the window. His expression was calculating, predatory—like a hawk sizing up potential prey.

And somehow, I knew that my year of proving myself had just gotten significantly more complicated.
