Chapter 2

“Evanna, you can fight all you want, but in the end, you’ll sign.” Lucien’s voice was smooth, serpentine.

The gold-tipped fountain pen in his hand glinted like a dagger as he held it out to me.

“And if I don’t?” My voice didn’t waver, but my knuckles whitened around the edge of the mahogany desk.

The study smelled of leather and aged whiskey, but the air was thick with unspoken threats.

Lucien leaned closer, his lips curling in a smile that could only mean one thing: he’d already won.

“Then Alana will deliver the news of your unfortunate... disappearance to the press. Perhaps we’ll even pin your vanishing act on some tragic scandal.”

He tapped the papers on the desk. Every line felt like a noose tightening around my neck.

Outside the frosted windows, the storm raged on, but it was nothing compared to the hurricane of betrayal swirling within me.

“Do you enjoy this?” I asked, venom lacing my words.

Lucien didn’t answer immediately. He sauntered behind me, his fingers trailing over the back of my chair.

“Power isn’t about enjoyment, darling. It’s about knowing you’ll always be ten steps ahead.”

Before I could respond, the door swung open. Alana stepped in, her scarlet dress a stark contrast to the darkness of the room.

“Still playing hard to get, I see.” Her tone was light, but her eyes glinted with malice. “Just sign it, Evanna. No one likes a drawn-out tragedy.”

My gaze shifted between them, searching for an opening, a crack in their facade.

“Do you even know what loyalty means?” I asked Alana, my voice sharp.

“Loyalty?” She laughed, the sound icy. “You think this is about loyalty? It’s about survival, sweetheart. And if you don’t play the game, you’re expendable.”

I swallowed the lump rising in my throat, willing myself not to react.

Damien stood at the threshold, his presence heavy. He didn’t speak, but his stormy gray eyes flickered with something unreadable—concern or indifference, I couldn’t tell.

“You’re wasting time, Lucien,” Alana said, flipping her hair over one shoulder. “Let her wallow in her self-righteousness while she still can.”

Her words cut, but the rage bubbling within me was a sharper blade.

“You’ll regret this, Alana,” I spat.

Her laughter was the only answer I received.

“You shouldn’t have baited her,” Damien said later, his voice low as we walked down the dimly lit corridor.

The house was a labyrinth of shadows, much like the people who lived in it.

“Why? Afraid she’ll crack under pressure?” I shot back.

“I’m afraid you will,” he replied, his tone sharper.

I stopped in my tracks, glaring at him.

“What do you care, Damien? You’re as much a pawn in his game as I am.”

“The difference is, I know when to play and when to fold.”

His words lingered, a challenge wrapped in cryptic advice.

“And what’s your move now?”

His lips tightened, but his silence spoke volumes.

“Evanna, you’re running out of allies.” Alana’s voice was the last thing I wanted to hear as I returned to my room.

But before I could respond, the ground beneath us shook violently.

A deafening explosion tore through the night, shattering the fragile tension with brutal force.

Smoke and chaos filled the air. Alana stumbled, her perfect composure crumbling as she grabbed the door frame for support.

“What the hell was that?” she demanded, panic creeping into her voice.

I didn’t answer. My instincts kicked in, adrenaline coursing through me as I pushed past her, searching for Damien.

The hallway was filled with frantic shouts, the acrid smell of burning wood stinging my nose.

“Evanna!” Damien’s voice cut through the chaos. He appeared from the smoke, his expression grim. “We need to move.”

I nodded, but Alana’s hand shot out, gripping my arm.

“This isn’t over,” she hissed, her eyes blazing despite the panic. “The game’s just begun.”

Her words sent a chill down my spine, but I shook her off, following Damien into the chaos.

As the flames consumed the night, one thought burned brighter than the rest: I had to end this.

“What now?” I asked Damien as we emerged into the rain-drenched courtyard.

His answer was a single word, heavy with foreboding.

“Survive.”
