Chapter 3

“Run, Evanna, or I’ll make you crawl,” Damien’s voice cut through the oppressive silence, his tone cold and unwavering.

I stood frozen in the rain-soaked alley, my breath fogging in the chill of the night.

He towered over me, his gray eyes sharp with urgency, but beneath the demand, I caught a flicker of hesitation.

“Run?” I echoed, my voice brittle against the backdrop of distant sirens. “And leave Lucien’s game unchecked? That’s not survival—it’s suicide.”

“Then suit yourself,” he snapped, stepping closer until I could see the anger flicker beneath his calm façade. “But when you’re six feet under, don’t expect a eulogy.”

His words stung, but they were the least of my problems. The faint buzz of a motorbike engine grew louder behind us—a reminder of what we’d stumbled into tonight.

Hours earlier, Damien had brought me to an abandoned warehouse under the guise of gathering evidence against Lucien.

The promise of answers had been enough to override my better judgment, but I should have known better.

Now, the Crimson Syndicate’s operatives were closing in, and I was standing in a dead-end alley with a man I couldn’t fully trust.

“Why did you bring me here, Damien?” I demanded, the rising tension making my voice shake.

He hesitated, his jaw tightening, but then he leaned in, his breath warm despite the cold rain.

“Because you need to see it for yourself—the kind of power Lucien wields. You think he’s just playing games with you? He’s not. This Syndicate… they’re the engine behind his empire.”

His words carried the weight of truth, but they also came wrapped in layers of manipulation.

I wanted to believe him, but trust was a currency I couldn’t afford to spend.

“And what’s your role in all of this?” I shot back, crossing my arms to hide the tremor in my hands. “Lucien’s errand boy? The Syndicate’s informant? Or something worse?”

“I’m trying to keep you alive,” he said, his voice quieter now but no less intense.

“If that means lying, manipulating, or fighting off the wolves at your door, I’ll do it. But you need to decide, Evanna. Are you in or out?”

The motorbike engine roared closer, breaking the fragile bubble of our confrontation. Damien pulled me into the shadows, his hand firm on my arm.

“Stay quiet,” he whispered, his eyes scanning the alley.

A man dismounted from the bike, his movements sleek and deliberate. The faint glint of silver at his belt—a knife—caught my eye.

“Damien,” I hissed under my breath, but he silenced me with a look.

The man’s steps echoed as he approached the warehouse entrance.

For a moment, it seemed like he wouldn’t notice us. Then his head snapped in our direction, his nose flaring as if he’d caught a scent.

My heart sank. Werewolf.

Damien shoved me behind him as the man stalked toward us, his movements predatory and precise.

“Didn’t think you’d stoop to dragging her into this,” the man growled, his voice thick with disdain. “Lucien will have your head for this, Damien.”

Damien didn’t flinch. Instead, he smirked—a calculated expression that sent a chill down my spine.

“Lucien won’t know if you don’t tell him, Marcus,” he said smoothly. “And you’re not leaving this alley alive.”

The air shifted, heavy with the threat of violence.

The fight erupted before I could process Damien’s words. Marcus lunged, his knife flashing in the dim light.

Damien countered with brutal efficiency, his movements a blur of calculated aggression.

I pressed myself against the wall, my breath shallow as I watched the two men clash. Blood sprayed as Damien landed a decisive blow, his blade slicing through Marcus’s side.

Marcus crumpled to the ground, clutching his wound, but his lips curled into a bloodied smile.

“You think this ends with me?” he rasped, his voice filled with malice. “Lucien has eyes everywhere. You can’t outrun the Syndicate.”

Damien didn’t respond. He stepped back, his breathing heavy, and wiped his blade clean.

“Let’s go,” he said to me, his tone leaving no room for argument.

As we retreated into the maze of alleys, my mind raced. The Syndicate’s reach was broader—and more dangerous—than I’d imagined.

But it wasn’t Marcus’s threats or Damien’s cryptic warnings that haunted me.

It was the coded message I’d intercepted earlier, buried in the depths of Lucien’s encrypted files:

“The wolves are restless. The Bianchi family moves against us. Prepare the blood pact.”

The implications hit me like a freight train. Werewolves weren’t just pawns in Lucien’s empire—they were integral to it.

And now, I was caught in the crossfire.

“You’re quiet,” Damien said as we reached the edge of the city. “What’s on your mind?”

I didn’t answer immediately. Instead, I met his gaze, searching for any sign of deception.

“Just wondering how much more I’ll have to lose before this ends,” I said finally, my voice bitter.

He didn’t respond.

But as we disappeared into the night, one thing was clear: the game had shifted, and the stakes were higher than ever.
