Chapter 1

Claire's POV

I found out six weeks before my wedding that my fiancé had been lending things out without asking me.

Not money. Not time.

My dress.

The backstage area of the Hartwell Grand was a narrow corridor of controlled chaos — catering staff weaving around floral arrangements, event coordinators muttering into earpieces, lighting technicians unspooling cables across the floor. I'd slipped back here to check the seating cards one last time before the Cole Group's annual charity gala officially opened. Ethan and I were co-hosting tonight for the first time. Our first real public appearance as a couple who would, in six weeks, be married.

I pushed open the door to the private suite we'd been assigned.

Vanessa was standing in front of the full-length mirror wearing my dress.

Not a dress that looked like mine. My dress — the deep navy with the hand-stitched beading along the neckline, the one I'd left hanging on the rack as a backup. She had it on, zipped up, smoothing her hands over the waist while Ethan stood two feet behind her, arms crossed, scrolling through his phone.

Neither of them heard me come in.

"The hemline sits a little low on me," Vanessa was saying. "Can you see if there's tape in the kit?"

"Ethan." My voice came out steadier than I felt.

He looked up. Nothing crossed his face — no guilt, no apology, just a slight adjustment of his expression, the kind of look that meant he'd already decided this wasn't a problem.

"Hey. Good timing. Vanessa's dress got held up in transit."

I looked at her. Vanessa turned from the mirror, and for a half second, something flickered in her eyes. Then it was gone, replaced by the soft, helpless expression I'd watched her use on people for the better part of ten years.

"Claire, I'm so sorry. I called three boutiques and nobody could get anything to me in time. Ethan said —"

"He said you could borrow mine."

"I know how it sounds." She started to reach for the zipper. "I'll take it off right now, I don't want to make things weird between you two —"

"He didn't ask me." I kept my eyes on Ethan. "I was here all afternoon. You could've called."

Ethan set his phone down. "Claire, we needed a solution. You have another option, your black one is still in the bag —"

"That's not the point."

"It's just a dress."

The three words landed flat and final, the way he said things when he'd already closed the conversation in his own head. I'd heard that tone before — over the venue deposit I didn't get to weigh in on, over the guest list additions that appeared without discussion. Small things, he always called them. Details.

Vanessa took a small step forward. "Honestly, Claire, Ethan mentioned you probably wouldn't mind. I never would've agreed otherwise."

I looked at her for a moment. Vanessa, who had been my closest friend since college. Vanessa, who knew exactly how long I'd spent picking that dress.

"Then Ethan can lend you his," I said.

Ethan made a sound that wasn't quite a laugh. Vanessa's expression shifted — just slightly, just enough.

In the end, she wore it.

I told myself it didn't matter. I put on the black dress and did my lipstick and walked out to the ballroom like the gala was the only thing that mattered tonight, because in a professional sense, it was. Four hundred donors, two city council members, a camera crew from a local news outlet. This event had been on the Cole Group's calendar for months.

For the first hour, it almost worked.

I moved through the room, made conversation, smiled at the right moments. Ethan was across the hall near the bar, doing the same. We were good at this part — separate but coordinated, covering ground. That was how he'd always described it: efficient.

The photographer called for a formal shot near the entrance.

I was talking to one of the foundation's board members when the setup began. By the time I turned, Ethan was already in frame — standing naturally next to Vanessa, angled toward her, one hand almost at her back. The photographer was adjusting his lens. Vanessa was laughing at something, her head tilted just slightly toward Ethan's shoulder.

A woman from the events team touched my arm. "Ms. Morgan? They need you in the shot. You're the co-host."

"I know," I said.

I walked over. Ethan stepped aside to make room, but it took him a beat longer than it should have.

The rest of the evening I spent making sure I was where I needed to be.

When the last donors filed out and the catering crew began breaking down the centerpieces, I went to find the car. We'd arranged a shared car service months ago — a detail Ethan had handled, a driver on call for both of us for the duration of the event season.

The attendant at the front checked his tablet.

"Mr. Cole had the car dispatched about twenty minutes ago, ma'am. For another guest."

I already knew the answer, but I asked anyway. "Which guest?"

"A Ms. Vanessa — I didn't catch the last name. She wasn't feeling well."

I found Ethan near the coat check. He saw my face and spoke before I could.

"She wasn't feeling well," he said. "It made more sense to send her first."

"And me?"

He was already pulling out his phone. "You can call another car. It's ten minutes on the app."

He said it the same way he'd said *it's just a dress* — not cruel, not even dismissive, really. Just matter-of-fact. Like the logistics had been evaluated and I was the variable that required the least accommodation.

I called the car.

I waited outside on the steps while the valets pulled up vehicles for the last of the guests. The November air was cold and smelled faintly of exhaust and the floral arrangements they were loading into the service van. I stood there in the black dress with my arms crossed and watched the street.

The car came in seven minutes.

I got in, gave the address, and watched the front entrance of the Hartwell Grand shrink through the rear window. The light from inside spilled gold across the wet pavement. A few stragglers still stood at the top of the steps.

And then I saw him.

Ethan, stepping off the curb. Not heading toward the rideshare lane. Moving toward a black sedan idling at the side entrance — the kind of car you pre-arrange, not the kind you call on the fly.

The sedan pulled smoothly into traffic.

I knew that route. I'd driven it with Vanessa a dozen times.

It went straight to her apartment.
