After His Mistress Broke My Mother's Bracelet, He Lost Everything

8.8 / 10.0
Every rose, every glass of champagne at the gala was arranged for Kason—the man who adored her in the rain a decade ago. But when he vanishes, leaving his jacket and phone behind, she uncovers the truth: his mistress has shattered her mother's bracelet. That careless destruction ignites a calculated fury. She won't weep. She'll strip away everything he treasures, one piece at a time, and make his downfall inevitable.

After His Mistress Broke My Mother's Bracelet, He Lost Everything Chapter 1

The gala was mine. I planned every table, every centerpiece, every flute of champagne poured under the chandeliers of our old alumni hall. I picked the white roses because Kason once said he liked them. Ten years ago. In the rain. When he still looked at me like I was the only person in any room.

I was fixing a crooked place card when I noticed his seat was empty.

His jacket was gone from the back of the chair. His phone, his glass, his easy laugh — all gone. I asked Marcus Hale, his business partner, if he'd seen him. Marcus shrugged too fast. He said Kason stepped out for air. He didn't meet my eyes.

I knew that look. I'd been married to that look for a decade without a ring on my finger.

I grabbed my coat and walked out into the cold.

Manhattan in November has a specific bite. The kind that finds the seam between your collar and your skin. I told the driver to wait. I walked. I don't know why I walked. Maybe because I already knew what I was going to find, and I wanted to give him one more block to prove me wrong.

He didn't.

Three blocks from campus, there's a diner students love because it's cheap. Neon sign. Cracked vinyl booths. The kind of place Kason hadn't set foot in for years, not since his suits started costing more than his father used to make in a month. I stopped across the street.

Through the fogged window, I saw him.

Candle on the table. His hand on hers. A girl with dark hair spilling over her shoulders, laughing up at him. Young. My age, ten years ago. My face, ten years ago. Same tilt of the chin. Same nervous flick of the wrist when she tucked her hair behind her ear.

Something behind my ribs went very quiet.

I stood there a long time. Long enough for my breath to make its own weather in front of me. Long enough to feel my jade bracelet warm against my wrist — my mother's bracelet, the last thing of hers I had left. I turned it once around my arm. Then I crossed the street.

The bell above the door jingled.

He looked up. He didn't jump. He didn't pale. He just smiled, slow and lazy, like he'd been waiting for me to catch up.

"Julianna." He said it the way you say a name you've grown tired of.

The girl looked me up and down. She wasn't scared. She was pleased. She lifted her glass to her mouth and sipped, eyes bright over the rim.

"Sit down if you want," Kason said. "Or don't. I'm done pretending anyway."

I stayed standing. "Pretending what."

"That I still want this." He waved a hand at me, vague, like he was shooing a waiter. "Look at you. You're past your prime, sweetheart. You should be grateful I kept you around this long."

The girl smothered a laugh in her napkin.

I didn't answer. I looked at his hand on hers. I looked at the candle burning between them, the wax pooling on the cheap saucer. I straightened the salt shaker beside me without thinking. Set it in line with the pepper. My fingers were very steady.

"Braelyn," Kason said to her, and I filed the name away. "Baby, this is the one I told you about."

Braelyn smiled. "Nice to finally meet you."

I walked out.

I didn't slam the door. I didn't cry. I got in the car and gave the driver our address. I already knew what I'd find there.

He'd beaten me home. Of course he had.

My shoes were in the hallway. My coats. A framed photo of us at his first ribbon-cutting, glass cracked down the middle. He was inside, whistling. Actually whistling. Kason threw a silk blouse over the threshold like he was tossing out garbage.

"Move your stuff by morning," he said. "Braelyn wants the closet cleaned out tonight."

I knelt and picked up the photo. I set it carefully on top of the coat pile. Then I took out my phone.

I made one call. Two words.

"Dad. Now."

Six minutes. That's how long it took the Rolls-Royce to slide up to the curb. Black as a closed door. The driver didn't ask questions. He opened the back for me and I stepped in with what I could carry.

I didn't look up at the penthouse. Not once.

My father was waiting at the estate in his study. He didn't say I told you so. He didn't say anything. He handed me a glass of water and put his hand on the back of my head, the way he used to when I was small. Then he laid a folder on the table between us.

I knew what was in it. Every wire. Every shell company. Every dollar of mine that had built the man who threw my shoes into a hallway tonight.

I didn't open it. Not yet.

I slept in my childhood room. I didn't sleep. I watched the ceiling turn gray, then gold. Somewhere around dawn, my phone lit up. Braelyn had posted her first photo from my penthouse. A Cartier box on my kitchen counter. Caption: *some women just don't know when to age out gracefully* 💋

Kason had already shared it.

I got up. I made my own coffee, the way I always did. I carried it back to the study.

And I opened the folder.
