Chapter 3

Ophelia stared at the empty space where Dr. Harrison had just been standing, her mind racing to make sense of his erratic behavior. She touched the back of her neck with trembling fingers, feeling the faint, raised texture of the crescent-shaped mark hidden beneath her dark hair. Her adoptive parents had never made a secret of the fact that she was found wrapped in a simple wool blanket on the steps of a county clinic with nothing more than a silver medallion and this distinct birthmark. They had loved her as best as they could before passing away years ago, leaving her to navigate the cold world alone. Why would a seasoned hospital doctor react with such stark terror and disbelief over a simple patch of skin?

Before she could puzzle out any logical explanation, the chaotic noise of the public ward abruptly died down.

The low hum of conversations, the persistent rattling of the medicine carts, and the groaning of patients in neighboring beds faded into an uneasy silence. The atmosphere in the room shifted so drastically that even the overhead fluorescent lights seemed to flicker in submission. It was the kind of heavy, oppressive silence that preceded a violent storm, caused not by fear of the unknown, but by the undeniable presence of absolute power.

Ophelia turned her head toward the entrance of the ward, wincing as her bruised ribs protested the movement.

The heavy double doors swung wide open with a sharp crash against the wall, bouncing back before being pushed firmly aside. Two men strode into the room with a synchronized, unhurried cadence that commanded every pair of eyes in the vicinity. They moved with the terrifying grace of apex predators entering a territory they already owned.

The man walking slightly ahead wore a bespoke charcoal-grey wool overcoat thrown loosely over a meticulously tailored three-piece suit. His height was imposing, his shoulders broad, and his jawline looked as though it had been carved from raw granite. His eyes, dark and piercing like chips of obsidian, swept across the crowded, squalid ward with an expression of quiet, lethal disgust. Every line of his body radiated a bone-chilling authority that made the nurses behind the central station freeze in their tracks, too terrified to ask for identification or visitor passes.

Right beside him walked a slightly younger man who shared the same sharp, aristocratic bone structure, though his expression carried a razor-edged cynicism. He wore an unbuttoned cashmere coat, his hands tucked casually into his tailored trousers, but his sharp eyes scanned the room with an intense, predatory focus that missed nothing.

Ophelia watched them approach, her breath catching in her throat. Even in the wretched environment of a public charity hospital, surrounded by the smell of antiseptic, cheap bleach, and human suffering, these two men looked like kings walking through a slum. They belonged in high-rise corporate glass towers, private auction houses, or the halls of global governance—not in a crowded room with rusted metal bedframes.

The taller man stopped walking. The silence in the ward became absolute. You could hear the faint, steady beep of a heart monitor three rows down as if it were echoing in a hollow cave.

Soren Carrington did not look at the elderly man coughing on his left, nor did he glance at the nurse trembling behind her desk. His gaze locked instantly onto the corner bed, pinning Ophelia in place with an intensity that felt physical. Behind him, Roderick mirrored his posture, his eyes narrowing as he took in the thin blanket, the stained walls, and the cheap plastic tray holding Ophelia's cracked phone.

"Look at this place, Soren," Roderick said, his deep voice carrying clearly across the quiet room without a hint of warmth. "They put our blood in a kennel."

"They won't have to breathe this air much longer," Soren replied, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.

Ophelia clutched the edges of her blanket tightly, her heart pounding against her ribs as the two towering figures closed the remaining distance between themselves and her narrow bed. She cleared her throat, trying to find her voice amidst the sudden rush of adrenaline.

"Excuse me," Ophelia said, her tone cautious, laced with a defensive wariness born from a lifetime of disappointment. "If you are looking for someone else in this ward, you have the wrong bed. Visiting hours don't start until noon, and I don't know who you are."

Soren stopped inches from the metal footboard. For a fraction of a second, the cold, impenetrable mask cracked, revealing a deep, churning ocean of raw emotion that he quickly forced back beneath an iron wall of control. His dark eyes roamed over her pale face, drinking in the bruised skin, the slate-grey eyes, and the messy dark hair framing her shoulders.

"We didn't come to visit a stranger, Ophelia," Soren said softly, stepping closer as his gaze dropped to the small, clumsy intravenous needle taped to the back of her bruised hand. "We spent twenty-two years looking for you, and we finally found where you were hiding."
