Chapter 4

The clinical hum of the heart monitor seemed to recede into total silence as Soren’s words hung in the stale air of the public ward. Ophelia sat frozen against her pillows, her fingers gripping the thin fabric of the hospital blanket so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her mind stalled, unable to process the sheer weight of what she had just heard. Twenty-two years of quiet acceptance—of believing she was a nameless nobody left on a clinic doorstep with nothing more than a silver medallion—collapsing into dust in a single, impossible sentence.

"You have the wrong person," Ophelia said, her voice dropping to a harsh, defensive whisper as she shook her head against the pillows. "I am not who you think I am. My name is Ophelia, and my parents passed away years ago. I am an ordinary person who works an ordinary job. There is some kind of mistake."

"There is no mistake, Ophelia," Roderick said, stepping closer to the side of the bed. His usual cynical edge was completely gone, replaced by a raw, quiet intensity that made it impossible to look away. He reached into the inner pocket of his charcoal-grey coat and pulled out a heavy, cream-colored leather folder, placing it gently on the edge of the plastic bedside table. "We don't make mistakes when it comes to family. Not after spending over two decades turning the world upside down to bring you home."

Ophelia stared at the leather folder, her breath catching in her throat. She looked from Roderick’s intense gaze up to Soren, whose towering frame seemed to vibrate with a suppressed, overwhelming emotion. The sheer gravity radiating from both men defied the wretched surroundings of the public ward, making the chipped paint and rusted metal beds look like background noise.

"How could you possibly know who I am?" Ophelia asked, her chest tightening as a mixture of fear and profound confusion washed over her. "People don't just spend twenty years looking for a stranger. What kind of joke are you playing?"

"It is no joke," Soren answered, his voice dropping an octave, losing its cold corporate edge and sounding almost fragile, like glass held together by sheer willpower. He stepped around the footboard, closing the distance until he stood right beside her narrow mattress. He did not touch her, respecting the barrier of her shock, but his dark eyes searched her face with a heartbreaking tenderness. "You were four years old when our family convoy was ambushed while traveling abroad. Rival business enemies wanted to cripple the Carrington name by destroying everything we loved. In the chaos of the gunfire and the fire, our nanny tried to smuggle you to safety, but the vehicle was blown apart. We lost you in the smoke and the blood, Ophelia. For twenty-two years, every single day of our lives has been haunted by the empty seat at our family table."

Ophelia’s lips parted, but no words came out. The fragmented memories she had kept locked away since childhood—flashes of loud noises, breaking glass, a terrified woman whispering in her ear while pushing her into the backseat of a stranger's car—suddenly snapped into sharp, painful focus. The orphan story she had lived with her entire life was a lie born out of survival.

"The birthmark," Roderick added quietly, gesturing toward the back of her head where her dark hair still hung in damp waves. "Dr. Harrison pulled us away just minutes ago after changing your bandages. He saw the crescent-shaped mark at the base of your skull bordered by those three distinct freckles. It is a rare genetic marker passed down through our maternal line for generations. Combined with the urgent preliminary DNA swab we authorized him to run against our family registry database ten minutes ago, the match is absolute. You are Ophelia Carrington. You are our baby sister."

The room spun slightly as the sheer magnitude of the revelation crashed over her. She was not a nobody. She was not just a discarded, unloved wife who had to beg for scraps of affection from a man like Lucien. She belonged to a dynasty—to an empire that possessed the power to shake global markets and shatter corporate boards.

"I don't understand," Ophelia whispered, pressing a trembling hand to her forehead as a mild wave of dizziness hit her from her concussion. "If you have been looking for me for so long... why did it take you until today?"

"Because we were searching everywhere except right under our noses in this city, trapped behind false paper trails and forged adoption registries created by the very people who tried to destroy us," Soren said, his jaw tightening as a dangerous, ice-cold fury flickered in his dark eyes. "But none of that matters now. The past is dead. You are found."

Before Ophelia could digest the full impact of his words, Soren reached down and carefully pulled the thin, scratchy hospital blanket away from her bruised arms, his expression hardening as he took in the clumsy intravenous needle and the yellowing bruises on her skin.

"This ends right now," Soren said, turning his head slightly toward the entrance of the ward. "Roderick, signal the transport team. We are moving her out of this slaughterhouse this instant."

"Wait," Ophelia protested weakly, trying to pull her arm back as Soren’s large, warm hand gently cupped her wrist, avoiding the IV line with practiced care. "I can't just leave. I have a husband. I have a life here—"

"A husband who left you to rot in a public charity ward while he plays house with his mistress?" Roderick cut in, his voice dripping with venom as he pulled out his own phone and tossed it onto the bedside table next to her cracked screen. "We already know about Lucien Sterling, Ophelia. We know every single detail about the parasite who took advantage of your kindness, let you take the impact of a car crash to save his worthless skin, and then sent you a text message telling you not to bother him."

Ophelia froze, her breath catching in her throat. "How do you... how do you know about that?"

Soren looked down at her, his expression softening into an impenetrable wall of absolute protection. "We are Carringtons, Ophelia. Nothing happens in this city—and certainly nothing happens to our blood—without us knowing it within five minutes."

A heavy, tense silence fell over the corner of the ward as the sound of disciplined footsteps echoed from the hallway outside. Several men in immaculate black suits carrying a specialized medical transit pod appeared at the double doors, stepping into the room with quiet, military efficiency.

Ophelia looked up at her brothers, realizing that the quiet, submissive life she had endured for the past three years was gone forever. The world as she knew it had ended, and a terrifying, magnificent storm was about to begin.

Soren leaned down, sliding his strong arms beneath her shoulders and knees with effortless care, lifting her out of the narrow metal bed before she could utter another word of protest.

"Hold on to me, little sister," Soren murmured softly against her hair as he lifted her into his arms. "Let's go home."
