Chapter 2

Three days after the crash, the hospital finally cleared me for discharge.

For seventy-two hours, I had waited in that sterile room. Ethan had not visited once. He had not sent flowers, checked on my recovery, or called to ask how I was coping with the loss of our daughter.

When the automatic glass doors slid open and the morning air hit my face, I saw him standing near the curb.

He was not alone.

Beside him stood Lily, wearing an oversized pastel coat that drew attention to her hand resting over her flat stomach. Standing beside them was Ethan’s eight-year-old son, Toby, holding a toy plane.

A handful of entertainment reporters and paparazzi were already lingering near the hospital entrance, their cameras flashing rapidly. Over the past few weeks, Lily had been photographed at Ethan's side at several industry galas, stoking rumors about their relationship. Ethan had never bothered to issue a denial.

Now, he didn't even try to maintain appearances.

"You took long enough," Ethan said as I stopped a few feet away. There was no warmth in his eyes, no remorse, not even a basic inquiry about my pain. "Let's get in the car before someone writes a stupid headline."

I gripped the strap of my small overnight bag, my stitches pulling tight beneath my coat. "Why is she here, Ethan?"

Lily offered a soft, apologetic smile that did not reach her eyes. "Aurora, please don't be upset. Ethan asked me to come along so we could clear things up before we get to the house."

"Clear what up?" I asked, my voice flat.

Ethan stepped between us, his posture stiff and impatient. "Lily is eight weeks pregnant. The doctor advised her to avoid stress, so she's moving into our estate starting today. She needs a proper environment to rest, and our home has the space."

The sheer audacity of his words hit me squarely in the chest.

I looked at the man I had spent five years with. The man who had once promised to build a quiet sanctuary for us far away from the cameras. Standing in front of me was a complete stranger—cold, calculated, and utterly shameless.

"She's moving in?" I asked, looking him dead in the eye. "Into our home?"

"It's a large house, Aurora. Don't be dramatic," Ethan replied smoothly. "You're recovering, and Lily needs a comfortable place to carry the child. It makes practical sense."

Before I could speak, Toby tugged on Lily's sleeve.

"Mom," Toby said loudly, looking up at Lily with an affectionate grin. "Can we go home now? I'm hungry."

The word echoed in the chilly air.

*Mom.*

Toby then turned his gaze toward me, his small face twisting in open disgust. "Dad, why does she look so ugly and pale? On television, she used to look pretty. Now she just looks like an old woman. Mom is so much prettier than her."

A few photographers nearby leaned in, snapping photos of the interaction.

I stared at the boy. For years, I had treated Toby like my own flesh and blood. I had helped him with his homework, cooked his meals, and attended every single school function while his biological mother remained absent.

Ethan didn't correct his son. He didn't reprimand him for being disrespectful. Instead, he reached out and patted Toby's head approvingly.

"Toby is just speaking honestly," Ethan told me, his tone dismissing my presence entirely. "You haven't taken care of yourself, Aurora. You look exhausted, and you need to accept the reality of the situation. There's no point in fighting it."

A rush of heat flooded my veins, burning away the lingering fog of medication.

"Accept reality?" I stepped closer to him, keeping my voice low so the cameras couldn't catch every word, though my fury shook my chest. "Three days ago, our baby died in that operating room. My body was ripped apart. And you bring your mistress and a pregnant belly to the hospital steps to welcome me home? How can you stand there and act like this is normal?"

Ethan’s jaw tightened. He leaned in slightly, his expression hardening into pure venom.

"You're the one who chose to quit the entertainment industry, Aurora," he said, each word calculated to cut as deep as possible. "Nobody forced you to walk away from your career. You gave it up to play housewife. So stop complaining about what you've lost now, because you did it to yourself."

The cruelty knocked the remaining air straight out of my lungs.

He knew exactly what he was doing. Five years ago, I was at the peak of my acting career. I had international accolades, critical acclaim, and every major studio offering me leading roles. I had walked away from all of it because he told me he wanted a normal life, because he said my fame was choking our relationship.

I had sacrificed the prime of my life for him. And now, he used my sacrifice as a weapon to prove I was worthless.

"Get in the car," Ethan ordered, turning his back on me to open the passenger door for Lily. "Or call yourself a cab. I don't have time to stand here indulging your pity party."

I didn't say another word.

I climbed into the back seat of the vehicle in total silence. Beside me, Toby leaned across the console to whisper jokes to Lily, who giggled softly and stroked his hair. Ethan watched them through the rearview mirror, a calm, satisfied smirk on his lips.

They acted as though I were already a ghost.

When the car finally pulled into the driveway of our suburban estate, I got out and walked straight through the front doors. I didn't wait for them. I pushed through the physical pain throbbing in my lower abdomen and climbed the stairs toward the master bedroom.

I pushed the door open, expecting the quiet sanctuary of my personal space.

Instead, the room was unrecognizable.

My vintage wardrobe doors stood wide open. Dozens of my tailored silk dresses and designer coats had been tossed aside or crammed into the back, replaced by rows of bright, trendy outfits with Lily's shopping tags still attached.

On the marble vanity table, my skincare bottles had been swept to the floor, replaced by Lily's luxury makeup kits and perfume bottles.

Then I looked at the wall above the headboard.

Our large, framed wedding portrait—the photograph from our private ceremony in southern France—was gone. In its place hung a giant, newly framed portrait of Lily, glowing in a golden gown, her hands cradling her waist.

A box sat in the corner of the room near the trash bin. Inside it lay our wedding photo, the glass smashed, the canvas slashed right across my face.

I stood frozen in the center of the bedroom, staring at the shattered glass.

Ethan thought he had won. He thought that by destroying my body, killing my unborn child, and erasing my presence from this house, he had reduced me to nothing. He thought I would quietly sit in the shadows while Lily took my husband, my home, and the spotlight I had willingly left behind.

They truly believed I had forgotten who I was before I became Ethan Laurent's wife.

I reached down, picked up a single shard of the broken picture frame, and held it tightly in my palm until the sharp edge bit into my skin.

They took my daughter. They took my marriage.

Now, I was going to take back my name, my career, and every single thing they thought they had stolen from me. And when I returned to the top, I would make sure both of them burned for what they had done.
