Chapter 3

The front gates of the Laurent estate in the Los Angeles hills swung open silently as the black sedan pulled up the private drive.

I sat in the leather passenger seat, my hand resting gently over the throbbing surgical incision across my lower stomach. Beside me, my mother, Celeste Laurent, kept her eyes focused on the road ahead. Her posture was straight, elegant, and uncompromising.

When she had heard what happened at the hospital and seen the photos Lily posted online, Celeste hadn't wasted a second. She arrived at Ethan’s front door with two private security guards, packed my essentials, and led me straight out before Ethan could even finish his afternoon conference call.

She hadn't spoken a single word of reproach during the entire drive. Not once did she say *I told you so.*

The car stopped in front of the stone courtyard. Celeste turned off the engine, turned to me, and placed a warm, steady hand over mine.

"Come inside, Aurora," she said softly. "You're home."

Walking through the wide double doors felt like stepping into another lifetime. The Laurent estate was filled with high ceilings, warm sunlight, and the quiet dignity I had traded away five years ago.

Celeste led me upstairs to my old suite in the east wing. When she pushed the doors open, I stopped dead in the doorway.

The walls weren't bare.

Every single milestone from my early twenties was mounted under soft spotlights. Framed premiere posters of my breakout films lined the hallway. On the glass shelves stood the International Critics Award, the Golden Globe nomination plaque, and the Best Actress trophy I had won at Cannes when I was only twenty-one.

During my five years with Ethan, he had insisted on packing all of my awards into cardboard boxes in the garage, claiming that displaying them made him feel like an afterthought in his own house.

I had obeyed him back then. I had hidden my own achievements away to protect his fragile pride.

"I had the staff unpack everything yesterday," Celeste said, standing beside me as she looked at the shining silver trophy. "I wanted you to remember who you were before you allowed that man to diminish you."

My throat tightened. "Mom... I threw away everything you and Dad helped me build. I gave up five years of my life, and I have nothing left."

Celeste turned to face me, her gaze sharp with unwavering conviction.

"You didn't lose your career, Aurora," she said firmly. "You only gave it away to the wrong man. And whatever you gave away, you can take right back."

Her words cut through the numbness that had settled over my heart since the crash.

That evening, I sat at the mahogany desk by the window, pulled out my old private contact book, and began making calls.

I started with my former agent, Bradley Cole.

"Aurora?" Bradley’s voice sounded surprised, then quickly shifted into professional caution. "It’s been a long time. I heard about what happened... I'm truly sorry for your loss."

"Thank you, Bradley," I said, keeping my voice steady. "I'm calling because I'm ready to return to work. I want to look at scripts. Supporting roles, ensemble casts, anything with substance."

There was a heavy pause on the line.

"Aurora, the industry isn't where you left it three years ago," Bradley said, his tone hesitant. "The market moves fast. The leading roles you used to command are going to younger talent now. Lily Miller’s agency has been aggressively locking down studio contracts, and right now, she’s the one producers want."

"Lily?" A bitter chill ran through me. "She doesn't have half my range."

"It's not just about talent," Bradley sighed. "Look, I’ll be straight with you. Ethan Laurent’s production company handles distribution for three major studio slates this year. Word is already circulating through the agency network that you're in an unstable mental state after the divorce proceedings. Producers think casting you is an insurance liability."

My fingers tightened around the phone until my knuckles turned pale. "Ethan told people I'm unstable?"

"He didn't make a public statement," Bradley explained quietly. "He just had his team drop quiet hints to casting directors. If they hire you, they risk losing distribution support from his network. Nobody wants to burn bridges with Ethan for an actress who has been out of the spotlight for years. I’m sorry, Aurora. My hands are tied."

He hung up after a few polite pleasantries.

I set the phone down, took a breath, and dialed another number.

I called Marcus Reed, a veteran director who had once publicly stated I was his favorite actress to work with. His assistant picked up and claimed he was indefinitely out of the country.

I called a production head at Vanguard Pictures who had offered me a multi-picture deal before I walked away. His secretary took a message and never called back.

One by one, the doors slammed shut.

Ethan had moved swiftly. He hadn't just replaced me in his home; he had poisoned the well in the industry, making sure no major studio would touch me. He wanted to make certain that even if I survived the crash, I would be completely broke, isolated, and forced to crawl back to him on my knees.

I closed my contact book with a snap.

If mainstream studios were terrified of Ethan’s influence, I wouldn't waste my time begging at their gates.

I opened my laptop and started searching through independent productions, low-budget festival projects, and unbacked screenplays looking for raw talent over studio backing. I found a gritty, character-driven indie script titled *Shattered Glass*, directed by an uncompromising newcomer who had zero ties to Ethan’s distribution network.

I didn't need a hundred-million-dollar budget. I only needed one camera, a solid script, and the craft I had honed my entire life.

Before I could send off an inquiry, the door to the study opened.

Celeste walked in, accompanied by Julian Foster, the head of our family’s private security and legal team. Julian set a thick manila folder directly on the desk in front of me.

"You found something?" I asked, looking up.

"We pulled the traffic camera footage, the phone logs, and the vehicle diagnostics from the day of your crash," Julian said, his voice grim. "It took some pressure on the local precinct, but we obtained the full data."

I pulled the folder open.

The first document was a revised itinerary sent to my driver the morning of the accident.

"Ethan’s personal assistant sent this route modification three hours before you left the clinic," Julian pointed out, tapping the paper. "He routed your car through the 4th Street intersection, knowing the traffic lights on that corner had scheduled maintenance and were flashing yellow."

My chest tightened as I flipped to the next page.

It was a bank transfer record and encrypted call log.

"Lily Miller purchased a burner phone two days prior," Julian continued. "She made four short calls to an individual named Craig Vance—a man with multiple reckless driving convictions and massive gambling debts. Vance’s bank account received a fifty-thousand-dollar cash deposit forty-eight hours before he rammed his truck into your town car."

A sickening coldness settled over my skin, but Julian wasn't finished.

He flipped to the final report, stamped by an independent automotive forensics inspector.

"The crash impact was severe, but your driver lost steering control two seconds before the hit," Julian said, meeting my eyes. "The stabilizer bar and brake lines on your car had been tampered with the previous afternoon, while your vehicle was parked in the private garage at Ethan's estate."

The room went completely silent.

I stared at the diagnostic diagrams, the red markers highlighting the severed metal lines, the photographic proof of sabotage.

Ethan and Lily hadn't just arranged a reckless driver to startle me or cause a minor collision to terminate my pregnancy.

They had cut the brakes. They had aimed a speeding truck straight at my passenger seat.

They had planned the complete physical destruction of my body, intending to leave me crippled, permanently disabled, or dead. They wanted to make sure I could never stand under the stage lights again, never speak lines, never walk a red carpet, and never claim a single shred of the life they had stolen.

A sharp, searing fire tore through the cold numbness in my veins, burning away every lingering trace of grief, every ounce of sorrow I had shed in that hospital bed.

I closed the folder, pressing both hands flat against the thick paper.

"They didn't just take my baby," I whispered, my voice chillingly steady as I looked at my mother. "They tried to erase me."
