Chapter 1

I smoothed down my simple gray dress for the tenth time, trying to appear composed as I stood at the edge of the Silver Creek Pack's grand meeting hall. Today was no ordinary gathering—Alpha King William Cross himself was visiting our territory with his entourage. The air crackled with tension and excitement.

Every pack member had their role during these formal alliance meetings. Mine was to remain invisible. As a wolfless werewolf—a shameful anomaly—I was only permitted to attend because Ryan had insisted. Ryan Mitchell, my childhood sweetheart, the Beta's son, and the only reason I hadn't been cast out as a rogue years ago.

"They're arriving," Ryan whispered, squeezing my hand briefly before moving to his position near the front. His touch steadied my nerves, as it always had since we were children. After my mother's suicide, he'd been my anchor in a world that saw me as defective.

The massive oak doors swung open, and the Alpha King entered, his overwhelming aura sweeping through the room like a physical force. I kept my eyes lowered respectfully, but couldn't help stealing a glance at the young woman who followed him—Madison Cross, his daughter, her chin tilted high with unmistakable arrogance.

Our Alpha stepped forward with the traditional greeting, but before he could complete the ceremonial welcome, Madison strode directly toward the refreshment table, bypassing the formal introduction circle entirely.

"Excuse me," I said softly, stepping forward before I could stop myself. "The welcome ceremony hasn't concluded yet. It's pack protocol that—"

"Protocol?" Madison's voice cut through the silence like a knife. "And who might you be to lecture me on protocol?"

All eyes turned to us. My heart hammered against my ribs as I realized my mistake. I wasn't supposed to speak. I wasn't supposed to be noticed.

"I apologize," I murmured, dropping my gaze. "I meant no disrespect."

I expected Ryan to remain silent—to pretend he didn't know me, as he often did in public gatherings. Instead, he stepped forward, and for one breathtaking moment, I thought he might defend me.

"Alpha King, honored guests," Ryan announced, his voice carrying across the now-silent hall. "Please forgive this interruption. Emma doesn't understand her place." He paused, and his next words shattered my world. "She hasn't awakened her wolf yet, even at twenty-one. We keep her around out of... compassion."

Gasps and murmurs rippled through the visiting Alphas. Madison's lips curved into a satisfied smirk.

"How interesting," she purred. "A full-grown werewolf without a wolf. I thought such defects were... handled in childhood."

Tears burned behind my eyes as Ryan laughed—actually laughed—at her cruel comment. The sound of his betrayal echoed in my ears as I backed away, then turned and fled from the hall.

I ran until my lungs burned, finally collapsing in the narrow corridor leading to my quarters in the Omega section. Sobs tore from my throat as Ryan's words replayed in my mind. *We keep her around out of compassion.* All these years, I'd believed we shared a special bond—perhaps even a mate bond, though I couldn't scent him properly without my wolf. Had it all been pity?

Back in my cramped quarters—little more than a glorified closet compared to the spacious rooms of higher-ranked pack members—I curled into myself on my narrow bed. Through the thin walls, I could hear the whispers of other Omegas.

"Poor thing, thinking she had a chance with the Beta's son."

"Did you see how he threw her to the wolves? Literally."

A soft knock interrupted their gossip. My uncle Marcus stood in the doorway, his expression a mixture of pity and discomfort.

"Emma," he sighed, sitting awkwardly at the edge of my bed. "You shouldn't have spoken out of turn."

"He humiliated me," I whispered, my voice raw. "In front of everyone."

"Ryan is advancing in the pack," Marcus said, as if that explained everything. "The Alpha King's daughter took notice of him today. That's... that's good for all of us, really. You should be happy for him."

I stared at my uncle in disbelief. Since taking me in after my mother's death, he had never once truly defended me. Always, always, the pack hierarchy came first.

"I need to rest," I said flatly.

After he left, I lay awake until dawn, something hardening inside me with each passing hour.

The next morning, I dragged myself to the training grounds as usual. The other wolves were already paired off for combat practice. I began the solitary drills assigned to me—strengthening exercises that might someday help me if my wolf ever awakened.

Mid-pushup, I stopped. A strange calm washed over me as I rose to my feet and walked directly to Ryan's father, our Beta.

"Sir," I said, my voice trembling but determined. "I'm withdrawing from the training program."

His eyebrows shot up. "You understand what this means for your already precarious rank?"

"I do."

"Ryan won't be pleased," he warned.

Something inside me—something that had bent and bent for years without breaking—finally snapped.

"That's no longer my concern," I replied, turning away before he could see the dangerous glint in my eyes.

I packed my training gear methodically, aware of the stares and whispers around me. For the first time in my life, I wasn't defining my worth by what others thought of me—especially not by what Ryan Mitchell thought of me.

And it felt like the first breath after a lifetime of drowning.
