Chapter 3

LIORA'S POV

The forest was alive in ways I had never noticed before. Every rustle of leaves, every crack of twigs beneath my feet, every whispering wind felt magnified under the silver light of the Blood Moon. My chest heaved, lungs burning with the cold night air. My dress was torn along the hem, snagged on roots and branches as I ran blindly into the dense trees. The world smelled of pine, damp earth, and something metallic-blood or danger, I couldn't tell.

I had hoped that distance would be enough to put me beyond the pack's eyes. Beyond Kael's. Beyond everyone. I had hoped to disappear, to fade. But the forest seemed to hum with something else tonight. Something alive. Something older. Something that recognized me.

Then I heard it: the low, deliberate growl that made my blood run cold. It came from just beyond a thicket, deep in shadow. My wolf stirred in response, claws digging into the dirt. The fur along my spine prickled. My heart hammered like a drum, the rhythm echoing in my skull.

I froze, listening. My ears picked up the smallest sounds: the rasp of movement over leaves, the subtle snap of a twig underfoot, the whisper of air as it shifted around me. My breaths came shallow, quick, and unsteady. My wolf wanted to run, wanted to hide, but something else urged me forward. Instinct. Survival. Power.

Three figures stepped out of the darkness. Rogues. Massive, jagged men whose presence alone made the forest feel smaller, more constricted. Their eyes glinted red in the moonlight, fixed on me like predators sizing up prey. They moved with a deliberate patience that made my stomach twist into knots.

I was still trembling when the first one lunged. Panic flared, sharp and blinding. My wolf surged, claws scraping the dirt as instinct took over. I shifted, letting my body expand and change. Pain erupted in my bones as my muscles reformed, my hands stretching into paws, my vision sharpening to a predator's clarity.

Silver light pulsed along my spine as ancient markings glimmered faintly under my fur. I could feel the forest respond to me. Leaves trembled. Shadows swirled. Even the moon seemed to shine brighter, washing the clearing in its spectral glow.

The rogue froze mid-leap. His confidence evaporated instantly. Where he had expected fear, he now met something else entirely: power.

I growled-a low, rolling sound that echoed through the trees. My voice was not just my own. It was the wolf's. It was the Silver Heir's. It was the prophecy coming alive. The rogue stumbled back, eyes wide, the first tremor of fear crossing his face.

The second lunged, faster this time. My claws met his shoulder before he could strike, the force of the blow sending him sprawling. His companions hissed, shocked, unsure how to respond.

I didn't pause to think. Every movement flowed naturally, instinctual, precise. My wolf guided me, shaping every attack, every dodge, every defensive strike. I felt strength I had never known, speed I could not have imagined. Power surged through me in waves, each one more intoxicating than the last.

And then I noticed the mark. One rogue bore a sigil on his wrist. Ancient. Forbidden. A sign that he was no ordinary hunter. He belonged to someone... powerful. Someone who had been tracking me even before Kael's rejection.

Fear and rage collided in my chest. My wolf screamed inside me, demanding blood, demanding recognition, demanding survival. I lunged at the rogue with every ounce of strength I possessed. Silver light burst outward, illuminating the forest and highlighting the rage in my eyes.

He fell to his knees with a strangled scream, eyes wide with terror. The other two hesitated, uncertainty flashing across their faces. Their fear made them clumsy, predictable.

I felt the pulse of the Blood Moon in my veins. It was feeding me. Shaping me. Pushing me past fear, beyond hesitation, into something ancient and terrible. My fur rippled in silver waves as the full force of the Silver Heir awakened.

Even in the midst of my own awakening, I could feel the bond pulsing. Kael. Far away. He was there, somewhere. Obsessed, possessive, hunting. I did not want him to reach me-not yet. Not until I understood what I had become.

The last rogue made a desperate attempt to flank me, but the forest itself seemed to rise in my defense. Branches caught him, roots twisted beneath his feet. I moved like silver lightning, instinct and strategy flowing together. My claws struck with precision, my teeth sank where necessary, and he fell back into the shadows, defeated and trembling.

I collapsed to the ground for a heartbeat, chest heaving, claws digging into the soft earth. Every muscle burned, every nerve tingled with the new energy coursing through me. I was not human anymore. I was wolf. I was power. I was prophecy. I was terror made flesh.

And yet even as I reveled in my newfound strength, a shadow moved between the trees. Large. Controlled. Familiar. Possessive.

Kael.

My chest tightened-not with fear, not entirely, but with a rush of emotion I could not name. Rage? Relief? Desire? All of it collided in a tidal wave that nearly knocked me off my feet.

His eyes were fixed on me, red and dangerous in the silver light. I could see the tension in every muscle. He had been tracking me, closing in, unstoppable and utterly Alpha. And though I was powerful now, I could feel his presence as clearly as if he were inside my mind.

The rogues had scattered. The forest was still. The Blood Moon gleamed above. And beneath it, I stood in silver fur, marked with ancient runes, trembling with adrenaline, fear, and the raw thrill of power.

I was no longer the girl he had rejected. I was something else. Something dangerous. Something the world-and Kael-had underestimated.

And I knew, with a cold certainty, that nothing would ever be the same again.
