Chapter 1

I stood frozen in the center of the Silver Moon Pack house, my heart pounding so hard I thought it might burst through my chest. The monthly full moon gathering had started like any other—wolves mingling, sharing news, paying respects to Alpha Marcus. I'd arrived with Jake, his warm hand in mine, his Beta aura a protective shield I'd grown to depend on.

Then everything shattered.

"Attention," Alpha Marcus's commanding voice silenced the room. "Beta Morrison has an announcement."

Jake's hand slipped from mine as he strode forward, his shoulders squared with a confidence I'd always admired. But something was different tonight—the way he wouldn't meet my eyes, how his jaw tightened when Alpha Marcus nodded for him to speak.

"I have an important declaration to make," Jake announced, his voice carrying through the hushed room.

My lips curved into an automatic smile. Perhaps this was about our future together, a formal acknowledgment of our relationship before the pack. We'd talked about it for months—how he'd eventually make me his Luna despite my... deficiency.

But then he turned, and the coldness in his eyes froze my smile in place.

"I, Jake Morrison, Beta of the Silver Moon Pack, reject you, Emma Sullivan, as my chosen mate."

The words hit me like physical blows. Each syllable a knife, each pause between words allowing the pain to sink deeper.

"I have found my true mate in Madison Parker of the Crimson Ridge Pack."

The room spun. Faces blurred. The collective gasp of the pack seemed distant, underwater. I searched desperately for any sign of the Jake I knew—the boy who'd held me through nights of tears when my wolf failed to appear, who'd whispered that being wolfless didn't make me worthless.

But his Beta aura crackled around him, powerful and unyielding. His rejection hung in the air, an irrevocable command.

Alpha Marcus bowed his head, a gesture of solemn acknowledgment that the rest of the pack mirrored. Pack law. Pack tradition. A Beta's right to reject a chosen mate for a true one.

Chloe appeared at my side, her warm hand gripping mine. "Breathe, Em," she whispered, but I couldn't. My lungs had forgotten how.

I fled.

Hours later, I lay curled on my bed, staring at the ceiling of my tiny apartment. The tears had dried, leaving salt tracks down my cheeks. My phone buzzed with messages from Chloe, but I couldn't bear her pity. Not tonight.

The emptiness inside me—the hollow where my wolf should be—seemed to expand, consuming everything. Without Jake, without a wolf, what was I to the pack? Nothing. Less than nothing.

I reached for the pack mind-link, a desperate idea forming. My fingers trembled as I composed the message, each word feeling like a further humiliation, yet also my only lifeline.

"Seeking a Seven-Day Mate Bond. Strong wolf. Kind heart. No questions asked."

I sent it before I could change my mind, the pack-wide announcement broadcasting my desperation to every wolf in Silver Moon territory. Immediately, regret washed over me. What had I done? Made myself an even bigger target for mockery?

Minutes passed. Then an hour. No response. Of course not. Who would want seven days with a wolfless nobody?

My phone buzzed. Unknown number.

I opened the message with shaking fingers.

"Requirements accepted. Seven days. No questions. But you must smile at least once each day."

I stared at the screen, a strange warmth fighting against the ice in my chest. Who would agree? And why add such an odd condition?

I fell into fitful sleep, dreams of Jake's cold eyes and faceless rescuers chasing each other through my mind.

The soft knock at my door woke me just after dawn. I stumbled to answer it, expecting Chloe with comfort food and revenge plans.

Instead, I found no one—just a bouquet of wild moonflowers, their silver-blue petals catching the morning light. A small card nestled among them.

"Day One begins now – R."

I lifted the flowers to my face, their sweet scent filling my senses. For the first time since Jake's rejection, my lips curved upward—just barely, just for a moment.

A ghost of a smile.
