Chapter 2

The door to my quarters clicked shut, and the mask I'd worn cracked instantly. My hands shook as I twisted the lock, then doubled over, pressing my palms against my knees while my wolf howled in outrage inside my chest.

*Breathe. Think. Act.*

I straightened slowly, touching the moonstone pendant hidden beneath my dress. My father's voice echoed in my memory: *"An Alpha never shows weakness to enemies. Save your tears for when the battle is won."*

The humiliation still burned—Linda's smirk, Reece's cold dismissal, the pack watching me bare my neck like a common Omega. But underneath the shame, something else stirred. Something dormant for years, waiting.

I moved to the small desk by the window and pulled out the secure mind-link crystal my father had given me years ago. "For emergencies," he'd said, not knowing how prophetic those words would be.

The crystal warmed in my palm as I focused my energy, reaching across pack territories to a frequency I hadn't used since childhood. The connection crackled, then solidified.

*"Noah Bishop."* I kept my mental voice steady, controlled. *"This is Eve Morrison. I need to speak with you. Now."*

Silence stretched for three heartbeats. Then his familiar presence flooded through the link, sharp with surprise and concern.

*"Eve? Moon Goddess, I haven't heard from you in years. What's wrong?"*

I closed my eyes, organizing my thoughts with the precision my father had drilled into me. Noah was Shadowpine Pack's Alpha now, grown from the boy who used to race me through the neutral forests. More importantly, he was someone Reece had always envied—powerful, respected, and utterly outside Silver Creek's influence.

*"I need you to investigate Alpha Reece Hayes for pack law violations,"* I said flatly. *"Specifically, embezzlement of pack funds and territorial agreement breaches. I have reason to believe he's been diverting resources for personal use."*

Noah's shock rippled through the connection. *"That's a serious accusation. Eve, what happened?"*

*"My mate—"* The word tasted like ash. *"My former mate orchestrated my rejection to steal my inheritance. He's been having an affair, threatened my family, and I need proof of his crimes before he can execute whatever plan he has next."*

The mental link went quiet, but I felt Noah's anger building like a gathering storm. When he spoke again, his Alpha authority resonated through every word.

*"Tell me everything."*

I did. The canceled celebration. Linda wearing Luna jewelry. The public humiliation. The rejection papers. Every detail spilled out with clinical precision, my emotions locked away where they couldn't interfere. I was not a heartbroken mate—I was Alpha James Morrison's daughter, and I had been trained for pack politics since birth.

*"That bastard,"* Noah growled when I finished. *"The mate bond is sacred. What he's done—Eve, this violates every code we have."*

*"I know."* My fingers tightened around the crystal. *"That's why I need evidence. Reece has been spending beyond Silver Creek's means for months. His mother's demands, Linda's jewelry, the celebrations—none of it adds up. If he's been embezzling to maintain appearances, the Pack Council will have grounds to intervene."*

*"You want me to request pack financial records for the territorial audit,"* Noah said slowly, understanding dawning. *"Smart. Very smart. Inter-pack agreements require transparency in resource management. If I cite concerns about Silver Creek's ability to maintain their border protections..."*

*"Then you have legitimate reason to review their accounts,"* I finished. *"And if those accounts show irregularities..."*

*"The Council gets involved."* Noah's approval hummed through the link. *"Eve, when did you become so calculating?"*

*"I've always been this way,"* I replied softly. *"I just hid it well."*

Too well. For years, I'd suppressed my Alpha instincts to be what Reece needed—a gentle, supportive mate who never challenged his authority. I'd kept his secrets, protected his reputation, played the role of weak Omega while my true bloodline lay dormant.

No more.

*"I'll start the investigation immediately,"* Noah promised. *"But Eve, this will take time. Pack bureaucracy moves slowly, even with legitimate concerns. Can you hold out?"*

*"I can do more than hold out,"* I said, my wolf rising closer to the surface. *"I'm going to make him pay."*

After Noah signed off, I turned to my private documents—the ones Reece didn't know existed. Being underestimated had advantages. While he'd dismissed me as insignificant, I'd quietly maintained copies of everything: pack financial statements, territorial agreements, even his mother's increasingly demanding correspondence.

I spread the papers across my desk, studying them with fresh eyes. There—a transfer of twenty thousand dollars to an offshore account last month. And another the month before. Each one labeled "pack security enhancement," but Silver Creek's patrol schedules showed no new equipment or personnel.

My pulse quickened. Linda's designer clothes had appeared around the same time. Coincidence? Unlikely.

I dug deeper, cross-referencing dates and amounts. Reece's mother had hosted an elaborate gathering four months ago. Cost: thirty-five thousand dollars. The pack's budget allocation for social events that quarter: fifteen thousand. The deficit had been covered by an "emergency resource fund" that wasn't approved by the Pack Council.

Embezzlement. Clear, documented embezzlement.

But there was more. I pulled out the territorial agreements between Silver Creek and the surrounding packs. My father had given me copies years ago, part of my Alpha training that Reece had never known about. The borders were clearly defined, patrol responsibilities outlined with precision.

Except Silver Creek hadn't maintained their eastern boundary in over six months. The patrol logs I'd copied showed massive gaps—entire weeks with no border checks. That section bordered Moonstone territory, which meant any rogue incursions would threaten my father's pack.

Another violation. Another piece of ammunition.

I worked through the night, building my case with methodical fury. Each document, each discrepancy, each broken agreement added another stone to the wall of evidence. By dawn, I had enough to bury Reece three times over.

But evidence alone wouldn't be enough. I needed timing. Strategy.

I needed to become the Alpha I was born to be.

As sunrise painted my quarters in shades of gold and amber, I felt it—a stirring deep within my soul. My wolf, silent for so long, suddenly pushed forward with overwhelming force. Not the gentle presence I'd always known, but something powerful and commanding.

*"Finally,"* she whispered, her voice resonating with authority I'd never felt before. *"You're ready to claim what's ours."*

My reflection in the window shifted. My eyes flashed with Alpha gold, just for a moment, before returning to their usual color. But I'd seen it. Felt it.

The awakening had begun.
