Chapter 3

The message I crafted was a masterpiece of manipulation, each word carefully chosen to strike at Luna Hayes's deepest insecurities. I kept my mental voice respectful, even deferential, as I reached out through the mind-link.

*"Luna Hayes, this is Eve Morrison. I hope I'm not disturbing you, but I felt you should know about tonight's celebration. Your son has found his true mate, and the pack is gathering to honor the occasion. I thought perhaps you'd want to attend, given your... position in pack hierarchy."*

I paused, letting the implications sink in before delivering the killing blow.

*"Linda Kelley is wearing the ceremonial Luna jewelry tonight. She looks quite... comfortable in the role. I'm sure you'll want to meet her properly."*

The silence that followed was deafening. Then, like a dam bursting, Luna Hayes's fury exploded through the connection.

*"WHAT?"* Her mental roar nearly shattered my concentration. *"That little nobody is wearing MY jewelry? In MY pack hall? Without MY permission?"*

I winced at the volume but kept my voice steady. *"I assumed you knew. Forgive me if I've overstepped—"*

*"You've done nothing wrong, child,"* Luna Hayes snarled, her rage redirecting toward its proper targets. *"But my son clearly has. How DARE he make such announcements without consulting me? I am still Luna of this pack until I choose otherwise!"*

The connection severed abruptly, leaving me alone with the echo of her fury. I allowed myself a small smile. Luna Hayes's possessive nature and need for control were legendary. She'd spent years manipulating Reece through guilt and financial pressure. The idea that he'd moved forward with a new mate—wearing her ceremonial jewelry, no less—without her approval would be unbearable.

I didn't have to wait long for results.

Twenty minutes later, the thunder of approaching vehicles shattered the evening calm. Through my window, I watched a convoy of black SUVs roar up the main drive, their headlights cutting through the darkness like searchlights. Luna Hayes had arrived with what looked like half the pack's warrior contingent.

I slipped from my quarters, keeping to the shadows as I made my way toward the main hall. The celebration was still in progress, but the mood had shifted. Pack members clustered near the windows, murmuring nervously as they watched the vehicles disgorge their passengers.

Luna Hayes emerged from the lead SUV like an avenging goddess. Even at fifty-five, she commanded attention—silver hair perfectly styled, designer clothes that cost more than most pack members made in a month, and an aura of authority that made nearby wolves automatically step back. Behind her, six of Silver Creek's most intimidating warriors formed a protective formation.

She strode through the hall's entrance without knocking, her heels clicking against the marble floor like gunshots. The celebration died instantly, conversations cutting off mid-sentence as every head turned toward the imposing figure in the doorway.

"Reece," Luna Hayes's voice carried across the room with deadly calm. "What exactly is the meaning of this?"

I pressed myself against the wall near the entrance, close enough to see everything while remaining unnoticed. Reece had gone pale, his Alpha confidence evaporating like morning mist. Linda, still wearing the Luna jewelry, looked like a deer caught in headlights.

"Mother," Reece managed, his voice strained. "This is... unexpected."

"Unexpected?" Luna Hayes moved deeper into the room, her warriors flanking her. "My son announces a new mate without consulting me, allows some nobody to wear ceremonial Luna jewelry without permission, and throws an expensive celebration without my knowledge or approval? Yes, I'd say this is quite unexpected."

Linda stepped forward, clearly trying to assert her new status. "Luna Hayes, I'm Linda Kelley. Your son's chosen mate and the new—"

"I know exactly who you are," Luna Hayes cut her off with surgical precision. "You're Robert Kelley's daughter. Your father works in pack maintenance. Your mother cleans houses for the higher-ranking families. And you," her eyes raked over Linda with obvious disdain, "you think wearing my jewelry makes you worthy of my son?"

The insult hit like a physical blow. Linda's face flushed red, but Luna Hayes wasn't finished.

"If my son insists on this... arrangement," the word dripped with distaste, "then we'll do this properly. I want the full ceremonial feast. The expensive wine from the reserve cellar. The finest cuts of meat. Crystal glasses, not those cheap things you're using. And accommodations for my warriors—the best guest quarters, naturally."

Reece's face had gone from pale to gray. "Mother, the pack budget—"

"The pack budget is my concern," Luna Hayes snapped. "Unless you're suggesting that Silver Creek Pack cannot afford to properly honor your mother and your new... mate?" The pause before 'mate' was loaded with skepticism.

I watched Linda's composure crack as the financial implications became clear. The jewelry, the celebration, Reece's expensive gifts—all of it was already straining pack resources. Now Luna Hayes was demanding the most costly feast possible, with accommodations for six additional warriors.

"Of course we can afford it," Linda said quickly, shooting a desperate look at Reece. "Can't we, darling?"

Reece's jaw tightened, but he nodded stiffly. "Naturally. Beta Marcus, please arrange for the ceremonial feast. Full service."

Beta Marcus looked stricken but bowed his head in acknowledgment. I could practically see him calculating the cost in his mind—easily thirty thousand dollars for what Luna Hayes was demanding, possibly more.

Luna Hayes smiled, but it was the smile of a predator who'd cornered her prey. "Excellent. And Linda, dear," her voice turned syrupy sweet, "do tell me about yourself. I'm simply dying to learn more about the woman who thinks she can replace me as Luna of this pack."

The battle lines were drawn. Luna Hayes had arrived with warriors and demands that would bankrupt the pack. Linda was trapped between maintaining her new status and facing the reality of pack hierarchy. And Reece stood caught between his manipulative mother and his scheming mistress, watching his carefully constructed plan crumble under the weight of competing ambitions.

I slipped away from the wall, my work complete. The first phase of my counterattack was in motion, and Luna Hayes was proving to be an even more effective weapon than I'd hoped.
