Chapter 1

The mind-link hit me like a physical blow, Beta Marcus's voice cutting through my thoughts with surgical precision. "Eve, Alpha Reece has officially canceled your father's birthday celebration. No explanation given. The Moonstone Pack leadership is... confused."

I nearly dropped the wildflowers I'd been gathering for the decorations, my fingers going numb. The sacred tradition, observed for over two centuries, dismissed without consultation. Without even the courtesy of a proper explanation to my father—Alpha James Morrison of the Moonstone Pack.

"What do you mean canceled?" I whispered through the mind-link, though my wolf was already stirring uneasily in my chest.

"The formal notice arrived this morning. Your mate cited 'pack obligations' but offered no details. Your father is... insulted doesn't begin to cover it."

Something cold settled in my stomach. Reece had been distant lately, his usual warm cedar scent tinged with something sharp and unfamiliar. I'd attributed it to Alpha stress, the weight of pack leadership. But this—this was different. This was deliberate.

I abandoned the flowers and shifted, my wolf form eating up the miles between the Moonstone territory and Silver Creek Pack lands. The wind carried familiar scents—pine, earth, the metallic tang of the creek that gave the pack its name. But underneath it all, something felt wrong. Tainted.

The main pack hall came into view, warm light spilling from every window. A celebration was clearly in progress, laughter and voices carrying on the evening air. My heart lifted slightly—perhaps Marcus had been mistaken. Perhaps Reece had simply rescheduled, planned something special here instead.

I shifted back to human form at the tree line, smoothing my simple dress and touching the hidden moonstone pendant at my throat. The familiar gesture usually calmed me, but tonight it felt like a lifeline.

The hall doors stood open, pack members mingling with drinks and elaborate finger foods. The kind of feast that cost serious money. My eyes scanned the crowd, searching for Reece's familiar broad shoulders and dark hair.

I found him.

And I found her.

Linda Kelley stood beside my mate—my mate—wearing the ceremonial Luna jewelry that should have been mine. The ancient silver pieces caught the light as she laughed at something Reece whispered in her ear, his hand possessive on her lower back.

The world tilted. Pack members were congratulating them, raising glasses in celebration. Mrs. Patterson from the kitchens was crying happy tears. Young wolves were asking when the official ceremony would be.

I stood frozen in the doorway, my wolf howling in confusion and rage. This wasn't possible. The mate bond—I could still feel it, that golden thread connecting us. Frayed and cold, but present.

"Oh." The soft gasp escaped before I could stop it.

Every head in the hall turned toward me. Conversations died mid-sentence. The festive atmosphere curdled into something thick and uncomfortable.

Linda's eyes found mine across the room, and her smile turned predatory. She leaned into Reece more obviously, her fingers playing with the Luna necklace—my necklace.

"Well, well," Linda's voice carried clearly in the sudden silence. "Look what the wind blew in."

I forced my feet to move, each step feeling like I was walking through quicksand. Pack hierarchy demanded I approach respectfully, head slightly bowed. Even if my world was crumbling, protocol remained.

"Alpha Reece," I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. "I came to discuss my father's celebration—"

"Oh, sweetie," Linda interrupted, her tone dripping with false sympathy. "Didn't anyone tell you? Reece is far too busy for... whatever that was supposed to be. He has real pack business to attend to now."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. I caught fragments—"poor thing," "always knew she wasn't right for him," "about time he found a proper Luna."

My wolf snarled, but I kept my expression neutral. "Perhaps we could speak privately—"

"Actually, I think this is perfect timing," Linda continued, gesturing grandly to the assembled pack. "Everyone should hear this. After all, we wouldn't want any more... misunderstandings."

She moved closer, using her slightly superior height to look down at me. "You see, Eve, while you've been off playing house with your little family visits, some of us have been here, supporting our Alpha. Really supporting him."

The implication hit like a slap. "Linda, I don't understand—"

"Don't you?" Her voice turned sharp, cutting. "Tell me, Eve, where exactly have you been spending your nights lately? Because it certainly hasn't been in your mate's bed."

Gasps echoed through the hall. I felt heat flood my cheeks. "I've been visiting my family, as you well know—"

"Visiting family," Linda repeated mockingly. "Is that what we're calling it? Because I heard some very interesting stories about you and certain... rogues... in the neutral territories."

The accusation hit me like a physical blow. Rogues. She was accusing me of infidelity with rogues—the lowest, most shameful betrayal possible for a mated wolf.

"That's not true," I whispered, but my voice was lost in the shocked murmurs of the pack.

Reece stepped forward then, his face a mask of cold authority. In his hand, he held official-looking papers, the pack seal clearly visible.

"Eve Morrison," his voice carried the formal Alpha tone that demanded submission. "These are rejection papers. You will sign them tonight, relinquishing all claims to this pack and any associated inheritance rights."

My legs nearly gave out. Rejection papers. The formal dissolution of our sacred mate bond.

"Reece, please," I breathed. "We can talk about this—"

"There's nothing to discuss." His eyes were cold, empty of the warmth I'd once found there. "Sign the papers, take nothing, and leave. Or—" His voice dropped to a threatening growl. "Perhaps your parents would like to discuss your... behavior... with me personally."

The threat was clear. Sign, or he'd go after my family.

Linda smiled triumphantly. "Now, Eve, show proper respect to your Alpha. Bare your neck and submit, like a good little Omega should."

The pack watched in rapt silence as I slowly tilted my head back, exposing my throat in the ancient gesture of submission. Inside, my wolf raged against the humiliation, but I had no choice.

Not yet.
