Chapter 3

The first crack in Ironveil's foundation appeared two days after the banquet.

I was leading a training session in the healing den—basic wound assessment for the younger pack members—when I noticed only three wolves had shown up. Last month there had been twelve.

Kira, one of the senior trainees, shifted uncomfortably when I asked. "Some of the others... they had other commitments."

"What commitments?"

She wouldn't meet my eyes. "London's hosting a social gathering in the great hall. She said it would be good for pack morale."

I kept my expression neutral. "I see."

Kira hesitated, then added quietly, "She said healers shouldn't need so many assistants anyway. That real Lunas focus on diplomacy, not... menial work."

The words hung in the air between us.

"Menial work," I repeated softly.

Kira flushed. "I didn't say that. She did."

I nodded slowly. "Thank you for being honest."

I continued the training session with the three who'd shown up, my hands steady as I demonstrated proper suturing technique on a practice dummy. But my wolf was awake now. Listening. Watching.

After the session ended, I walked past the great hall on my way back to my quarters. Through the open doors I could see London holding court, surrounded by younger wolves. She was laughing, her hand resting lightly on a young warrior's arm. The gathering looked casual. Permissive. Fun.

Everything I had never been allowed to be.

Several wolves glanced up as I passed. Their expressions were carefully blank. No one called out to me. No one invited me in.

I kept walking, Ash trotting at my heels.

That night, I updated my journal:

*Training attendance: 12 to 3. London's gathering during scheduled healer session. "Menial work."*

I closed the book and sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the wall. Ash curled up beside me, his small body warm against my thigh.

"It's fine," I murmured to him. "We've weathered worse."

But my wolf didn't believe me.

The second crack came three days later.

I was restocking supplies in the healing den when it hit—a sharp, sudden warmth through the mate bond. Not pain. Not anger. Something softer. Flattering. The specific comfort of being needed by someone who made you feel strong.

I froze, my hand halfway to a jar of dried comfrey root.

The feeling wasn't mine. It was Christian's. Leaking through the bond before he could stop it.

For three seconds, I felt exactly what he felt. The ease of London's admiration. The way she looked at him like he was invincible. The way she made him forget the shame that had lived in his chest since the rogue war.

Then the bond-mark on my neck went ice-cold.

I gasped, my hand flying to my throat. The cold spread through my skin like frost, sharp and sudden and wrong. My wolf slammed against my ribs, a warning howl trapped inside my chest.

Then Christian's wall came down. Hard. Deliberate. The bond went silent.

I stood there in the healing den, my hand pressed against the mark, my breath coming shallow and fast. Ash whined softly at my feet, pressing his nose into my palm.

I crouched down and buried my face in his fur. He licked my cheek once, twice, his small body trembling with worry.

"It's okay," I whispered. "It's okay."

But for the first time in ten years, I didn't tell myself the coldness was temporary. I didn't tell myself Christian would come back to me once the crisis passed.

I just held Ash and breathed.

That night, I couldn't sleep. I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, feeling the bond-mark pulse cold against my skin. Ash was curled up on my chest, his small heartbeat steady and warm.

I ran my fingers through his fur, counting his breaths. One. Two. Three.

Somewhere in the pack house, Christian was awake too. I could feel it through the bond—a distant, muffled awareness, like hearing someone move in another room.

But he wasn't reaching for me. He hadn't reached for me in months.

I closed my eyes and focused on Ash's warmth. On the steady rise and fall of his small ribs. On the way his ear twitched when I scratched behind it.

"You're all I need," I whispered to him. "You know that, right?"

Ash made a soft sound in his sleep, something between a whimper and a sigh.

I held him closer and tried not to think about the cold spreading through my chest.

Three weeks after the Solstice Banquet, I woke to the smell of smoke.

Not woodsmoke. Not cooking fires. Something sharp and chemical and wrong.

I bolted upright, my wolf surging awake. Ash was already on his feet, hackles raised, a low growl rumbling in his small chest.

I threw on my cloak and ran.

The healing den was burning. Orange flames licked up the wooden walls, but the smoke was wrong—thick and acrid, the kind that made your eyes water and your throat close. Wolfsbane.

I didn't think. I just ran inside.

The heat hit me like a wall. The smoke filled my lungs, sharp and poisonous, and I dropped to my knees, coughing. My skin burned where the smoke touched it. Wolfsbane-laced accelerant. The kind designed to kill wolves on contact.

"Ash!" I screamed.

I heard him whimper from the back of the den.

I crawled forward, my hands and knees scraping against the burning floor. The smoke was so thick I couldn't see. Couldn't breathe. My wolf was screaming inside my chest, clawing to get out, but the wolfsbane was everywhere.

I found him in the corner, his small body convulsing.

I scooped him up and pressed him against my chest. His fur was slick with sweat. His breathing was shallow, rattling. I poured my healing gift into him—everything I had, every drop of power—but it slid off him like water off glass.

Wolfsbane didn't care about healing gifts.

"No," I whispered. "No, no, no."

I stumbled out of the den, Ash cradled in my arms. The cold night air hit my burned skin and I gasped, falling to my knees in the dirt.

Ash's breathing was getting slower. Softer.

"Stay with me," I begged. "Please. Please stay with me."

His small body went still in my arms.

I felt the exact moment his heart stopped. Felt the warmth leave his body. Felt the bond between us—the only bond I'd ever chosen, the only creature I'd ever raised from birth—go silent.

He let out one last breath against my neck. A soft, thin whimper.

Then nothing.

I knelt there in the dirt, holding his small body, and something inside me broke that had nothing to do with mate bonds or pack politics or ten years of silence.

I tilted my head back and screamed.

The sound tore out of my throat, raw and animal and endless. My wolf howled with me, a grief so deep it shattered every wall I'd ever built.

Somewhere in the distance, I heard voices. Footsteps. Wolves gathering.

I didn't care.

I held Ash's body against my chest and let myself break.
