Chapter 4

The warriors arrived within minutes of my scream. I heard their boots pounding across the courtyard, heard the sharp commands, the organized chaos of a pack responding to crisis. Someone shouted for water. Someone else yelled about the eastern border.

I didn't move. I stayed on my knees in the dirt, holding Ash's body, his small weight already cooling in my arms.

The flames behind me roared higher. The wolfsbane smoke twisted through the air, thick and poisonous. My lungs burned with every breath. My skin felt raw where the accelerant had touched it. I didn't care.

Footsteps approached. I looked up.

Christian stood three feet away, his expression tight and controlled. London clung to his arm, her white nightgown pristine despite the chaos, her pale eyes wide and glistening with tears.

"Seraphina." Christian's voice was clipped. Professional. "Are you injured?"

I stared at him. At the mate I'd known for ten years. At the Alpha whose pack I'd rebuilt. He was looking at me the way he'd look at any pack member reporting damage after a border skirmish. Assessing. Cataloging. Moving on.

I opened my mouth. No words came out.

London pressed closer to Christian's side, her hand trembling against his sleeve. "Oh goddess," she whispered. "The rogues—they must have breached the eastern border. I saw claw marks on the outer wall."

Christian's jaw tightened. He turned to the senior warrior beside him. "Full border sweep. Now. Double the guard on the guest suite."

"Alpha," the warrior said carefully, "the Luna—"

"Is fine." Christian's tone left no room for argument. "Focus on the security breach."

He didn't ask if I was hurt. He didn't ask what I'd lost. He looked at me one more time—at the burns on my hands, at Ash's limp body in my arms—and what crossed his face wasn't grief.

It was irritation.

The expression of a man inconvenienced during a crisis.

Then he turned and walked away, London still clinging to his arm.

I stayed on my knees until the warriors extinguished the fire. Until the smoke cleared. Until the courtyard emptied and I was alone again.

Then I stood up, cradling Ash against my chest, and walked toward the forest edge.

I buried him myself. With my bare hands. In the clearing where I used to take him to practice shifting, where he'd tumbled through the grass and chased butterflies and slept in patches of sunlight.

I dug until my fingers bled. Until the hole was deep enough. Until I could lay him down gently and cover him with earth.

Before I filled the grave, I cut a single tuft of fur from behind his ear. The softest part. I pressed it to my lips, then sewed it carefully into the lining of my cloak with trembling fingers.

When I walked back to the pack house, the bond-mark on my neck was ice-cold.

But my wolf wasn't howling anymore.

She was silent. Watchful. Waiting.

I spent the next three days in the ruins of my healing den.

The pack had cleared the debris, salvaged what they could, and moved on. But I went back. Every morning. Alone.

I sifted through the ashes with methodical precision, my healer's training taking over where grief couldn't reach. I collected samples of the accelerant residue. Examined the burn patterns on the wooden beams. Noted the distribution of the wolfsbane compound.

It was refined. Concentrated. The kind of formulation that required access to a proper herbary and sophisticated botanical knowledge.

Rogues didn't have that.

Rogues used crude poisons. Stolen supplies. Desperation tactics.

This was deliberate. Professional. Precise.

On the third day, buried in the accelerant residue near the eastern wall, I found it.

A trace so faint I almost missed it. A slick, oily residue that didn't match the wolfsbane compound. I lifted it to my nose and inhaled carefully.

White orchid.

My wolf surged awake inside my chest. Not a howl. Not grief.

Certainty.

I sealed the sample in a small glass vial and added it to the evidence file I'd been building. The compound analysis. The burn pattern diagrams. The claw marks on the outer wall—too shallow, too evenly spaced, carved rather than torn.

Everything pointed in one direction.

I closed the file and sat back on my heels, staring at the blackened walls.

Then I stood up and went to find Maren Cole.

I found her in the training yard, overseeing a group of junior warriors. She looked up when I approached, her expression carefully neutral.

"Luna," she said quietly. "Can I help you?"

"I need to speak with you. Privately."

She dismissed the trainees with a gesture and followed me to the edge of the yard, out of earshot.

I handed her the evidence file without preamble. "Read this."

Maren opened it slowly. Her eyes scanned the pages. Her jaw tightened.

When she looked up, her expression was grim. "You're sure?"

"I'm sure."

She was quiet for a long moment. Then she said, "I saw her."

My wolf went still. "When?"

"Two nights before the fire. Near the eastern herbary. Hours after curfew." Maren's voice dropped lower. "She said she was looking for chamomile. For her nerves."

"Did anyone else see her?"

"Just me."

I nodded slowly. "Will you testify?"

Maren met my eyes. "Yes."

I added her testimony to the file in neat, precise script. Then I sealed it and tucked it under my arm.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

Maren hesitated. "Seraphina... be careful. London has the Alpha's ear. If you accuse her publicly—"

"I know."

She studied my face for a moment longer. Then she inclined her head and walked away.

I stood there in the training yard, the evidence file pressed against my chest, and felt something shift inside me.

Not grief. Not rage.

Clarity.

I walked to the Alpha's office and knocked once. No answer. I pushed the door open.

Christian was at his desk, bent over a stack of border reports. He looked up, his expression already impatient.

"Seraphina. I'm busy—"

I set the formal tribunal summons on his desk. The parchment was sealed with my Luna mark—the first time I'd used it in years.

"I'm invoking my right as Luna to convene a pack tribunal," I said quietly. "Three days from now. Full assembly."

Christian stared at the summons. Then at me. "For what purpose?"

"To present evidence of a crime against the pack."

His jaw tightened. "What crime?"

"Arson. Poisoning. Murder."

The word hung in the air between us.

Christian picked up the summons and read it twice. His expression was unreadable.

He didn't ask who I was accusing. He didn't ask what evidence I had.

He just set the parchment down and looked at me with that same cold, distant expression I'd seen for ten years.

"I'll consider it," he said finally.

I turned and walked out without another word.

The bond-mark on my neck burned ice-cold all the way back to my quarters.
