Chapter 2

The Winter Solstice Banquet was held in the great hall, under chandeliers that threw golden light across the polished stone floor. I stood near the back wall, Ash at my feet, watching the pack gather in their formal clothes. The air smelled of roasted meat and pine boughs. Christian sat at the head table in his ceremonial Alpha coat, dark blue with silver embroidery. London sat beside him in white silk, her pale hair swept into an elegant knot.

I wore the same dress I'd worn to every formal event for the past five years. Simple gray wool. Practical. No one had told me to dress differently. No one had told me anything.

The formal toast began after the meal. Christian rose first, lifting his glass, his voice carrying easily across the hall. He thanked the Moon Goddess for the pack's strength. He praised the warriors who guarded the borders. He acknowledged the allied packs who had sent representatives. His speech was smooth, practiced, empty of anything that mattered.

Then London stood.

She didn't ask permission. She simply rose, her glass in hand, her smile soft and radiant. The hall quieted immediately. Even Christian looked surprised, though he didn't stop her.

"I want to thank Alpha Christian," London said, her voice pitched just loud enough to carry, "for his noble leadership. For welcoming me into Ironveil during such a difficult time." She paused, her gaze sweeping the room. "It's rare to find an Alpha with such compassion. Such strength."

Several wolves murmured in agreement. Christian inclined his head slightly, accepting the praise.

London's smile widened. "Of course, it must be difficult," she continued, her tone turning sympathetic, "for a pack of such proud, purebred lineage to lack a Luna of... proper bloodline." Her eyes flicked to me for just a moment. "But I suppose we all make do with what the Moon Goddess provides."

The hall went still.

I felt every eye turn toward me. Felt the weight of their stares, their pity, their silent agreement. My wolf stirred inside my chest, a low rumble that started deep in my ribs and spread through my bones.

I set down my water glass. The clink of glass on wood was the only sound in the hall.

Then I stood.

My Luna aura unfurled for the first time in years. I didn't force it. I simply stopped holding it back. The air in the hall thickened, heavy with the scent of cinnamon and woodsmoke. Several wolves near me shifted in their seats, their eyes widening.

I walked forward. Slowly. Deliberately. Ash followed at my heels, his small paws silent on the stone floor.

"You're right," I said quietly. My voice didn't need to be loud. The hall was already silent. "The Moon Goddess does provide."

I stopped in the center of the hall, directly in London's line of sight. She was still standing, her glass half-raised, her smile frozen in place.

"She provided the healer who rebuilt Ironveil's eastern wall after the rogue war destroyed it," I continued. "Stone by stone. For six months."

I turned slowly, meeting the eyes of the wolves around me. Several senior warriors dropped their gazes.

"She provided the Luna who negotiated the alliance with Bayou Shadow Pack when Ironveil had nothing left to trade but goodwill and medical supplies."

My voice dropped lower. Steadier.

"She provided the healer who trained every medic in this hall. Who formulated the wolfsbane-neutralizing compound that's kept this pack's water supply safe for the past eight years. Who sat beside every wounded warrior after every border skirmish and stitched them back together while their Alpha sat in his study."

I looked directly at London. Her pale face had gone rigid.

"She provided the Luna who carried the stones for the new training grounds. Who planted the herb gardens that supply this pack's healing den. Who named every wolf pup born in the past decade and held their mothers' hands through labor."

I paused. Let the silence stretch.

"So yes," I said softly. "The Moon Goddess provides. And she provided exactly what Ironveil needed when it had nothing left."

I turned and looked at Christian. He was staring at me, his jaw clenched, his hands flat on the table. He said nothing.

Several senior warriors bowed their heads. Maren Cole, one of the oldest warriors in the pack, stood and inclined her head toward me—a gesture of respect I hadn't seen in years.

London's smile had disappeared entirely. She set down her glass with a sharp clink and sat down, her movements stiff and controlled.

I walked back to my seat at the far end of the table. Ash curled up at my feet. I picked up my water glass and took a slow sip, my hand perfectly steady.

The rest of the banquet passed in muted conversation. No one looked at me directly. But I felt the shift in the room. Felt the way the warriors near me sat a little straighter. Felt the way London's white orchid perfume seemed suddenly cloying and artificial.

Christian didn't speak to me for the rest of the evening. He didn't look at me. But when I left the hall, I felt his eyes on my back.

The bond-mark on my neck burned cold all the way home.

The next morning, I woke to silence. No summons from Christian. No pack business. No acknowledgment of what had happened at the banquet.

I dressed, fed Ash, and went to the healing den as usual. The junior healers greeted me quietly, their eyes respectful but cautious. Word had spread.

I spent the morning restocking supplies. Yarrow. Calendula. Comfrey root. My hands moved through the familiar motions while my mind stayed quiet. Watchful.

Around midday, I saw two junior warriors I'd personally trained—Kellen and Rhys—standing guard outside London's guest suite in the west wing. I stopped in the hallway, frowning. They were supposed to be on the eastern border post. I'd assigned them myself three days ago.

I approached the senior warrior on duty near the main entrance. His name was Garrett. He'd been with Ironveil since before the rogue war.

"Garrett," I said quietly. "Why are Kellen and Rhys guarding the guest suite?"

He shrugged, not meeting my eyes. "Alpha's orders."

"When did he reassign them?"

"This morning."

I kept my expression neutral. "And the eastern border post?"

"Still short two warriors."

I nodded slowly. "Thank you."

Garrett shifted uncomfortably. "Luna—"

"It's fine," I said.

I walked back to the healing den, Ash trotting beside me. My wolf was silent inside my chest. Not angry. Not hurt.

Watchful.

I pulled out the small leather journal I kept in my workbench drawer. It was old, worn at the edges, filled with notes on herb combinations and healing protocols. I flipped to a blank page near the back and wrote a single line in neat, precise script:

*Eastern border: -2 warriors. Guest suite: +2 warriors. No consultation.*

Below that, I added:

*White orchid scent. Moved chair. Ten years of silence.*

I closed the journal and slid it back into the drawer.

Then I went back to restocking supplies, my hands steady, my mind perfectly calm.

I didn't know yet what I would do with the ledger I was keeping. But I was keeping it.
