Chapter 1

The full moon bathed the forest in ethereal silver light, casting long shadows between the ancient pines as I ran with my pack. My paws barely touched the ground, each leap sending exhilarating jolts through my body. These monthly pack runs were when I felt most alive—most connected to my wolf and to Ryan.

My inner wolf, Lily, howled with joy as we darted between trees, the scents of pine, earth, and pack filling our senses. Eight months pregnant or not, nothing could diminish the freedom I felt during these sacred runs.

*This is perfect*, I thought, feeling the comforting presence of my mate somewhere ahead, leading our pack as the powerful Alpha he was. Three years into our bond, and my heart still swelled with pride knowing I was Luna to the mighty Silvermoon Pack.

That's when I caught it—a scent that didn't belong. Wild, untamed, with undertones of something cloying and artificial. Rogue.

I skidded to a halt, my pregnant belly making the sudden stop awkward. The wolves around me continued their run, unaware of the intruder. My hackles rose as I scanned the moonlit clearing ahead.

She emerged from between two ancient oaks, a sleek black wolf with calculating eyes that seemed to glow amber in the darkness. Even in wolf form, there was something deliberately provocative about her posture—challenging, mocking. She transformed with fluid grace, revealing a woman with sharp features and a cruel smile.

"Hello, Luna," she said, performing an exaggerated bow that was clearly meant to mock rather than respect. "Or should I say... temporary Luna?"

I shifted back to human form, one protective hand instinctively covering my swollen belly. "Who are you? You're trespassing on Silvermoon territory."

"I'm Chloe Bennett," she replied, her voice carrying a dangerous edge that made my skin prickle. "And I'm exactly where I belong."

The name hit me like a physical blow. I'd heard whispers, of course—servants' gossip about a she-wolf from Ryan's past. But he'd dismissed my questions whenever I'd asked, saying it was ancient history not worth revisiting.

"You need to leave," I said, trying to summon the authority of my Luna status despite the unease crawling up my spine. "Rogues aren't welcome here without Alpha permission."

Chloe's laugh was like shattered glass. "Oh, I think you'll find I have all the permission I need. Ask your mate who I really am."

---

After the run, I found myself following Chloe to the old oak boundary marker, my heart pounding with dread. The massive tree stood sentinel at the edge of our territory, its ancient trunk scarred with generations of pack symbols.

"What do you want?" I demanded, keeping my distance. The rogue's scent was even more unsettling in human form—wild earth poorly masked by cheap perfume.

"To reclaim what's mine," Chloe said simply, leaning against the oak with casual confidence. "Ryan Sterling is my true fated mate, Madison. Not yours."

The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet. "You're lying."

"Am I?" Her smile was venomous. "Why don't you ask him why he marked you? It wasn't because you're his fated mate. It was because I rejected him years ago for a better offer, and his pride couldn't handle it."

"That's not true," I whispered, but doubt had already taken root. It would explain so much—the way Ryan sometimes seemed distant, how his wolf occasionally seemed restless even after our marking.

"I'll prove it," Chloe said, pulling a small knife from her boot. "A wager between us. Ten tests through the mate bond. If Ryan's wolf answers your call even once over mine, I'll leave Silvermoon territory forever."

"And if he doesn't?" My voice sounded small even to my own ears.

"Then you'll acknowledge what you already know deep down—you're just a placeholder. A political convenience." Her eyes flicked to my pregnant belly. "A broodmare."

Rage flared within me, hot and protective. "You're wrong. Ryan loves me. We're having a child together."

"Then you have nothing to fear from my challenge." Chloe carved strange symbols into the bark of the oak, then sliced her palm, pressing the bloody print against the wood. "Do we have a deal, Luna?"

I should have walked away. Should have gone straight to Ryan. But pride and certainty—the absolute conviction that my mate would choose me—made me reach for the knife.

"We have a deal," I said, cutting my palm and pressing it against the inscribed stone at the base of the oak. Blood magic—ancient and binding.

Two pack sentinels watched from the shadows, silent witnesses to what I didn't yet realize was the beginning of my undoing.

Chloe's smile widened, revealing teeth that seemed too sharp in the moonlight. "Let the games begin, Luna."
