Chapter 3

The morning sun filtered through the trees surrounding our neutral territory cabin, casting dappled shadows across the porch where I sat. Three days had passed since I'd severed my connection with Alejandro, and the werewolf community was still buzzing with the scandal. I'd received messages from pack leaders across the region—some offering support, others simply curious about the details.

I traced the rim of my coffee mug, my thoughts drifting to what came next. Without a mate bond, I was essentially packless—a strange limbo for someone who'd spent her entire life preparing to be Luna.

"Aaliyah James."

The deep voice startled me. I looked up to find Lucian Reynolds standing at the edge of the clearing, his tall frame silhouetted against the morning light. Alpha of the Shadowmoon Pack, my former territorial rival, and quite possibly the last person I expected to see here.

"Alpha Reynolds," I acknowledged, rising to my feet. "This is unexpected."

He approached with measured steps, his presence commanding attention. Unlike Alejandro's manufactured charisma, Lucian's authority seemed innate—a quiet power that required no posturing.

"I heard about what happened," he said, his dark eyes studying me. "News travels fast in our world."

"Indeed it does." I kept my voice neutral, unsure of his purpose. "Is there something I can help you with?"

He gestured toward the chair opposite mine. "May I?"

I nodded, and he sat down with surprising grace for such a large man. Up close, I noticed details I'd previously overlooked—the sharp intelligence in his eyes, the way he carried himself with genuine confidence rather than Alejandro's forced swagger.

"I'll be direct," Lucian said, leaning forward slightly. "I'm proposing an alliance between our packs."

"An alliance," I repeated, unsure where this was heading.

"A contract mating," he clarified. "You need a pack. I need a Luna with your... qualifications."

I nearly choked on my coffee. "You can't be serious."

"I've never been more serious." His expression remained impassive, but something flickered in his eyes—respect, perhaps. "Your handling of the situation with Wells was impressive. You put tradition and dignity above convenience. That's rare."

"And what exactly would this contract entail?" I asked, my mind racing.

"Territorial rights for both our packs. Mutual defense. And a proper Luna ceremony—one that honors traditions, not modern shortcuts."

I studied him carefully. "Why now? Why me?"

"Because you deserve better than what Wells offered." He spoke with surprising sincerity. "And because a strategic alliance with someone who respects our ways is more valuable than any political match."

I stood abruptly, needing space to think. The proposal was absurd—yet strangely appealing. Lucian had always been fair in our territorial disputes, even when we were rivals. He'd never disrespected pack traditions or used underhanded tactics.

"This is... unexpected," I said finally.

"It's practical," he countered. "You need stability. I need a Luna who understands our ways."

I paced the length of the porch, considering his words. A contract mating wasn't ideal, but it would restore my position, give me a pack again—and most importantly, it would show Alejandro that I wouldn't be diminished by his betrayal.

"Alright," I said, stopping mid-stride.

Lucian's eyebrows rose slightly—the first break in his composed expression. "Just like that?"

"Just like that." I turned to face him fully. "When do we begin?"

A slow smile spread across his face. "Now."

---

The neutral territory elders gathered in a circle as Lucian and I stood before them. The ceremony was simple but traditional—everything Alejandro had dismissed as outdated.

"Are you certain this is what you want?" Elder Catherine Blackwood asked me quietly.

I met her gaze steadily. "I am."

She nodded once, then addressed us both. "A contract mating is binding until both parties agree to dissolve it. Do you both enter this agreement willingly?"

"I do," Lucian said, his voice firm.

"I do," I echoed.

Lucian stepped closer, his eyes never leaving mine. "I, Lucian Reynolds, Alpha of the Shadowmoon Pack, take you, Aaliyah James, as my mate and Luna."

The formal words hung in the air between us. This wasn't love—it was strategy and mutual respect. But as Lucian lowered his head to my neck, his breath warm against my skin, something unexpected stirred within me.

His teeth broke the skin with surprising gentleness, marking me as his Luna. The bond snapped into place immediately—not the tentative connection I'd had with Alejandro, but something stronger, more certain.

I gasped as his mark sealed, feeling the rush of pack bonds forming around us. When I opened my eyes, the neutral territory elders were smiling.

"The Moon Goddess blesses this union," Elder Catherine announced.

Lucian's hand found mine, his thumb brushing over my knuckles in a gesture that felt oddly natural. "Luna Aaliyah," he said softly.

The title settled over me like a mantle—not a burden, but a recognition of what I'd always been meant to be. As news of our alliance spread through the werewolf community, I wondered what Alejandro would think when he heard that I'd not only survived his betrayal but thrived beyond it.

And for the first time since discovering his betrayal, I smiled genuinely—not because I'd found love, but because I'd found myself again.
