Chapter 4

The Shadowmoon Pack territory stretched before me, a vast expanse of ancient forest and rolling hills that seemed to breathe with life. As I walked alongside Lucian, our shoulders occasionally brushing, I felt something unexpected stirring within me—a sense of belonging I hadn't anticipated.

"It's beautiful," I said, gesturing toward the sunrise painting the mountains in gold.

Lucian nodded, his eyes never leaving my face. "Our ancestors chose this land for its strength. The mountains shield us from the north winds, and the river provides fresh water year-round."

I noticed how naturally he included me in his description—"our ancestors," not "my ancestors." The distinction wasn't lost on me.

"Alpha! Luna!" A young wolf emerged from the tree line, bowing respectfully. "The council is assembled and awaiting your presence."

Lucian's hand found the small of my back, guiding me forward with a touch that felt surprisingly natural. "This is Aaliyah James, my mate and Luna," he announced, his voice carrying across the clearing.

To my surprise, the pack members didn't hesitate. They bowed immediately, accepting my presence without question.

"Luna Aaliyah," they murmured in unison.

I caught Lucian's satisfied expression. "They accept you," he said quietly.

"They respect you," I corrected. "And therefore respect your choice."

Something flickered in his eyes—surprise, perhaps, or something deeper. His hand lingered on my back a moment longer than necessary before he led me toward the council chambers.

---

Three days later, I stood at the border of Shadowmoon territory, facing the last people I wanted to see.

"These are sacred grounds," I said coldly to the delegation from Crescent Ridge Pack. "You weren't invited here."

Elder Thompson stepped forward, his weathered face creased with concern. "Luna Aaliyah, we come in peace."

"Luna Aaliyah is not your title to use," Lucian's voice cut through the tension as he appeared at my side. His presence was like a physical shield, his Alpha aura radiating protective fury.

"We've come to negotiate," Elder Thompson continued, undeterred. "The alliance between our packs is too important to abandon over... misunderstandings."

"Misunderstandings?" I stepped forward, my own anger rising. "Is that what you call desecrating sacred ceremonies? Allowing another woman to wear my ceremonial gown?"

Behind the elders, I spotted Beta Marcus, his eyes darting nervously. Something clicked into place.

"You," I pointed directly at him. "You orchestrated this entire thing, didn't you?"

The elders exchanged glances. "We don't know what you mean—"

"I've reviewed the security footage," I interrupted. "Beta Marcus deliberately arranged for Milana to have access to my quarters. He provided her with the key."

Marcus paled. "That's ridiculous—"

"The timestamps don't lie," I continued, pulling out my phone with the evidence. "You knew exactly when I would be away from my quarters. You planned this."

Lucian's growl was low and dangerous. "Is this true?"

The silence that followed was answer enough.

---

"These are the ceremonial plans I submitted," I said, spreading documents across the council table. "And these are the changes that were made without my knowledge or consent."

The pack council members leaned forward, examining the evidence I'd gathered. The room was silent except for the rustling of papers as they reviewed the damning documentation.

"Here," I pointed to a signature at the bottom of a form. "Beta Marcus approved these changes, claiming they had Alpha Alejandro's blessing."

"And the witnesses?" Elder Catherine asked.

I nodded to the door, where three pack members entered—decorators who had been present during the ceremony preparations.

"We were told to remove the blessing stones," one testified. "Alpha said they were outdated."

Another added, "We were ordered to move the altar. I tried to explain the sacred alignment, but..."

"The sacred alignment was deliberately destroyed," I concluded. "Along with every other traditional element of the ceremony."

The council members exchanged troubled glances. Elder Catherine's expression was grave.

"These violations are... unprecedented," she finally said. "To deliberately disregard sacred traditions..."

"The testimony about Milana Lopez accessing Luna quarters is equally disturbing," another elder added.

I placed a final document on the table—a formal complaint I'd drafted with Lucian's help. "I'm not asking for vengeance," I said, though part of me wanted exactly that. "I'm asking for acknowledgment of what happened."

As the council members nodded solemnly, I felt Lucian's presence behind me—solid, supportive, and unexpectedly warm. His hand brushed mine under the table, a small gesture that sent an unexpected current through my body.

This was supposed to be a strategic alliance, nothing more. So why did his touch feel like coming home?
