Chapter 2

The ceremonial gown lay before me, its delicate fabric shimmering in the moonlight. Once sacred, now defiled. My fingers traced the intricate embroidery—generations of Luna's blessings woven into every stitch—now violated by Milana's touch.

"Are you certain about this?" My mother asked softly beside me. "Once burned, it cannot be restored."

"I'm certain." My voice didn't waver. "A Luna's gown is sacred. It's not just fabric—it's the vessel for blessings that bind us to our pack, our mate, our ancestors. She didn't just try on a dress. She desecrated a sacred artifact."

The ancient purification ritual required specific ingredients—sage for cleansing, cedar for purification, and wolf's bane to break negative energy. I arranged them carefully around the gown, my movements deliberate and precise.

"By the light of the Moon Goddess," I began, my voice steady despite the ache in my chest, "I cleanse this garment of all impurities. Return it to ash, that it may be reborn in purity."

The flame caught quickly, curling around the fabric. The heat pressed against my face as I watched my months of preparation turn to smoke and embers. With each swirl of ash rising into the night sky, I felt something inside me harden—not in bitterness, but in resolve.

"It's done," I whispered as the last thread disintegrated.

My family and closest supporters formed a circle around me, their presence solid and reassuring. My father's hand squeezed my shoulder. "What now?"

"Now we leave." I turned away from the smoldering remains. "Gather only what's essential. We're moving to neutral territory."

The packing was efficient, almost mechanical. Clothes, personal items, the few treasures I couldn't bear to leave behind. Everything else—the gifts Alejandro had given me, the ceremonial items prepared for our union—I left behind. They no longer held meaning.

By dawn, we'd established ourselves in the small cabin at the edge of pack lands—neutral ground where neither pack's laws held absolute sway. My mother busied herself making coffee while my father secured the perimeter.

"They'll come," I said, staring out the window at the tree line. "He won't let this go easily."

I was right.

The cars pulled up mid-morning—three of them, black SUVs with tinted windows. Alejandro emerged from the first, his face a mask of controlled fury. Milana followed, her expression a mixture of defiance and something that might have been fear.

I stepped onto the porch, my spine straight, my chin lifted. "You weren't invited here."

"Aaliyah, be reasonable," Alejandro called, his voice carrying that false sincerity that once made my heart race. Now it just made my stomach turn. "This is all a misunderstanding."

"Is it?" I descended the steps slowly. "Was it a misunderstanding when you changed our sacred ceremony without consulting me? Was it a misunderstanding when you gave Milana access to my private quarters? When you let her wear my ceremonial gown?"

Milana stepped forward, her lips curved in a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "I was just trying it on, Aaliyah. No harm done."

"No harm?" I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "You violated one of our oldest laws. A Luna's ceremonial gown is sacred—only the chosen Luna may touch it before the ceremony."

I turned to address the small crowd that had gathered—pack members from both territories, drawn by the drama unfolding.

"According to ancient law," I continued, my voice carrying across the clearing, "anyone who willfully desecrates a Luna's ceremonial garments must provide monetary compensation equal to three times the garment's value."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. The gown had been hand-embroidered by three generations of Luna's, its value incalculable in terms of tradition and significance.

"Furthermore," I added, meeting Milana's widening eyes, "the werewolf council must be notified of this violation."

Alejandro's face darkened. "You wouldn't dare."

"Wouldn't I?" I stepped closer, lowering my voice. "You've lost the right to make demands of me."

With deliberate focus, I reached for the mental connection that had formed between us during our courtship—the mind-link that allowed us to communicate across distances. I could feel it there, fragile but present.

And then I severed it.

The psychic snap echoed through the clearing like a physical sound. Alejandro stumbled back as if struck, his hand flying to his temple.

"What have you done?" he whispered.

"Cut all ties," I replied simply. "As is my right when a mate bond is broken through betrayal."

The message would spread quickly through the werewolf community—Alejandro Wells had been so disrespectful of sacred traditions that his intended Luna had severed their connection completely.

Already, I could see pack leaders exchanging glances, their expressions thoughtful as they reassessed Alejandro's fitness to lead. A werewolf who didn't respect sacred traditions couldn't be trusted to uphold pack values.

As I turned away from them, I caught sight of a familiar figure at the edge of the gathering—Lucian Reynolds, Alpha of the Shadowmoon Pack, watching with an unreadable expression. Our eyes met briefly across the distance, and something electric passed between us before I looked away.

Little did I know that this moment would change everything.
