Chapter 2

The silver wolf pendant gleamed in the candlelight as Ryan fastened it around my neck, his fingers lingering against my skin. Seven years together, and his touch still sent electricity coursing through my veins. The marking ceremony was intimate—just the two of us in the Alpha's quarters, surrounded by flickering candles and the scent of burning sage.

"It's beautiful," I whispered, touching the delicate pendant that rested just above my heart. The craftsmanship was exquisite, the silver wolf captured mid-howl, its tiny eyes inlaid with amber stones that caught the light.

"Seven years deserves something special," Ryan murmured, pressing his lips to my forehead. "You've been my strength through everything, Natalie. Even when I forgot myself."

Emma stirred within me, a mixture of pleasure and unease rippling through our shared consciousness. She'd been restless since discovering Ryan's continued connection with Victoria, more suspicious than I allowed myself to be.

"I need to finalize some territory agreements," Ryan said, already pulling away. "I'll be in my study if you need me."

I nodded, watching him leave with a familiar ache. Even now, with his memory restored, there was a distance between us that hadn't been there before. Emma growled softly in my mind, urging me to follow.

*Not now*, I thought. *Let him work*.

But an hour later, when Ryan was called away to deal with a border dispute, I found myself drawn to his study like a moth to flame. The room smelled of him—pine, musk, and that indefinable Alpha power that clung to his skin. I ran my fingers over his desk, touching papers and books he'd handled.

The locked chest beneath the window hadn't been there before. Small and ornate, it seemed out of place among the utilitarian furnishings of the study. Emma's curiosity flared hot and insistent within me.

The key was hidden exactly where Ryan always hid important things—beneath the false bottom of his desk drawer. My hands trembled as I unlocked the chest, telling myself I was being paranoid, that I would find nothing but pack documents.

Instead, nestled on black velvet, lay a necklace that made my breath catch. A perfect moonstone, larger than any I'd ever seen, set in platinum and surrounded by diamonds that caught the light like trapped stars. A small card lay beside it, the elegant script unmistakable: *For Victoria. Forever yours.*

The pendant at my throat suddenly felt like lead, a cheap consolation prize compared to this masterpiece. The moonstone alone was worth more than anything I owned—a Luna's jewel, meant for the true mate of an Alpha.

I closed the chest with shaking hands, replacing the key and leaving the study before the tears burning behind my eyes could fall.

That night, I confronted him in the library, the moonlight streaming through tall windows and painting silver patterns across the floor.

"What is this?" I asked, my voice steadier than I felt, holding up my phone with a photo of the necklace displayed on the screen.

Ryan's expression shifted, a flicker of alarm quickly masked by practiced calm. "You went through my things?"

"Answer me," I demanded, Emma's strength flowing through me. "A moonstone necklace for Victoria? While I get silver?"

He crossed the room in three long strides, towering over me. When he spoke, it was with that deep, resonant Alpha tone that vibrated through my bones and made my wolf want to submit.

"It's for diplomacy, Natalie. Victoria's father has connections we need. The necklace is a political gesture, nothing more."

I wanted to believe him. Goddess help me, I wanted to believe him so badly that I almost convinced myself the inscription meant nothing.

"Then why hide it?" I whispered.

"Because I knew you'd react exactly like this." His voice softened as he cupped my face. "You're my mate, Natalie. My Luna. Don't doubt that."

But doubt had already taken root, spreading like poison through my veins.

Three days later, as I sorted herbs in the healer's wing, the door swung open without a knock. Victoria stood there, her perfect blonde hair cascading over shoulders draped in an expensive cashmere sweater. Behind her loomed two massive men I didn't recognize—rogues, by their wild scent and the wary way they held themselves.

"Hello, Natalie," Victoria purred, her red lips curving into a smile that never reached her eyes. "I have a proposition for you."

She placed a leather folder on my worktable, flipping it open to reveal a contract and a bank statement with a number that made my eyes widen.

"Ten million dollars," she said, running a perfectly manicured nail along the paper. "All yours, if you renounce your mate bond with Ryan and leave Silvermoon Pack. Forever."

One of the rogues stepped forward, producing a silver knife. "The contract requires blood to seal it. Your choice, Luna. Take the money and disappear, or..." He let the threat hang unfinished in the air.

Victoria's smile widened, the moonstone necklace—*my* Alpha's gift—gleaming at her throat. "Choose wisely, Natalie. Some offers only come once."
