9.6 / 10.0
At 9:47 on a Thursday night, Kinsley Carter’s world shattered. Exhausted from crafting pack barriers, she stood in the Ironridge great hall only to face the ultimate betrayal: her mate, Alpha Deacon Fox, looked her in the eyes and publicly rejected her. As their sacred connection severed and her neck mark turned ice-cold, Kinsley was cast into a brutal new reality. Yet, from the ashes of her broken bond, a dormant power rises as her hidden royal heritage begins to stir.

After My Alpha Rejected Me, I Awakened Royal Blood Chapter 1

The bond broke at 9:47 on a Thursday night, and I felt it happen before I understood the words.

I was standing at the back of the Ironridge great hall, wolfsbane still dried under my fingernails from a week of brewing emergency barriers for the Silverfang demonstration. My knuckles were split. I hadn't slept in four days. I'd told myself that tonight, after the alliance was announced, Deacon would look at me across the room the way he used to — cedar and rain, the whole pack watching him choose me on purpose for once — and it would be worth it.

He did look at me across the room.

He held my eyes while he spoke.

"I, Deacon Fox, Alpha of the Ironridge Pack, reject you, Kinsley Carter, daughter of Tomas Carter, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Just cold, the way a stone goes cold at night. Then it went hollow — and that was worse — like a door closing on an empty room inside me. My knees hit the floorboards before my brain caught up. Something in my chest tore in a long clean line, and I heard myself make a sound I did not recognize.

"…I renounce the bond the Moon Goddess placed between us. From this night, you are not mine, and I am not yours."

He finished the vow. Every word. He did not rush.

I was convulsing on the floor of the pack house I had healed warriors in for eight years, and not one wolf moved. I saw boots. Skirts. The polished shoes of Deacon's father, Gareth, three feet from my face. No one crouched. No one reached.

Deacon stepped over me.

I felt the air move as he passed. His scent — cedar, rain, the thing I had trusted with my whole life — turned to ash in my mouth, and something else surged underneath it. Something new. A low vibration, deep in my sternum, like a fault line shifting under a house. It was not a howl. It was almost worse than a howl. It was rage that had been waiting a very long time to arrive.

It was gone before I could name it.

"…and it is my honor," Deacon was saying, from somewhere above the ringing in my ears, "to announce my intent to court Hallie Gray, daughter of Alpha Silas Gray of the Silverfang Pack."

Applause. Actual applause.

I got my palms under me. My arms shook. Somebody's wine glass had spilled and I was kneeling in it. I pushed up to one knee, then the other. A woman I had stitched back together last winter looked away from me.

I stood.

I walked out of that hall on my own two feet. Nobody carried me. Nobody offered.

---

Gareth found me before I made it to the stairs.

"Effective immediately," he said, like he was reading a shipping manifest, "you are stripped of healer rank. You will vacate the Alpha quarters tonight. Report to the cellar at dawn for reassignment. Omega labor."

His mate stood behind him. She did not look at me either. Eight years of free wolfsbane. Eight years of "be a dear, Kinsley." Eight years.

"Understood," I said. My voice came out flat and clean. I was surprised by it.

---

The apartment smelled like him. That was the worst part.

I moved through it fast. Barnaby — my small ridiculous runt, thirteen pounds of loyalty in a scruffy coat — pressed against my ankle the whole way, understanding what he could not name. I took my father's old Gamma jacket from the hook by the door. I took my wolfsbane journal from the drawer under the bed, the leather worn soft at the corners from my own hands. I took nothing else. Not the photographs. Not the ring. Not the sweater I had worn the first winter, when we had no heat and slept in one bed for warmth.

On the kitchen counter, next to the fruit bowl, sat the moon-bone charm.

I had carved it myself in our first den, when we had nothing. He used to press his thumb against it before border runs. I had believed, for a long time, that it meant something.

I set it down on the counter. Careful. Centered.

I did not look at it again.

I picked up Barnaby. He tucked his small head under my chin. My hand went to my neck, to the cold spot where the mark used to live, and I made myself lower it.

At the door I stopped. Not to look back. Just to breathe.

Behind me, on the counter, the charm sat exactly where I had left it. In front of me, the hallway stretched dark and empty, and somewhere past it my father was still alive and I had work to do.

I opened the door.

From the great hall, faint through two floors of pack house, I heard Deacon laugh at something Silas Gray said, and my phone buzzed once in my pocket — a message I would not read until I was already in the rain, three states away from the wolf I used to be.
