Chapter 2

Three days after the rejection, Camryn started wearing white.

Not Luna white—not yet, she wasn't stupid enough to claim the ceremonial color outright—but pale things, cream and ivory, the kind of clothing that photographed like status even when it wasn't. She walked the pack house halls with her chin lifted, murmuring soft instructions to Omegas who flinched and obeyed anyway, because refusing felt like refusing Roland himself.

I watched it happen from the infirmary doorway, an empty herb tray balanced in my hands, and said nothing. There was nothing to say yet. I was still counting.

She found me on the fourth day.

I was at Amos's bedside, checking the color under his fingernails—still too gray, the moonroot Camryn had "treated" herself with doing him no good at all—when I heard the click of her heels in the corridor. Two of Roland's ranked warriors flanked her, Delta wolves I'd trained myself two winters ago. They didn't meet my eyes.

"Sutton." Camryn's voice was honey-soft, pitched for the small crowd of pack members drifting in to watch. "Roland's asked me to let you know. You'll need to vacate the Luna quarters by week's end."

Amos's eyes opened. He didn't speak, but I felt him listening, felt the old Alpha's attention sharpen even through the fog of his weakening wolf.

"Your presence is upsetting to the new order," Camryn added, tilting her head like she was delivering bad news to a child. "I'm sure you understand."

I set the tray down. My hands didn't shake.

"I'll leave," I said, "when the former Alpha and Luna ask me to. Not before."

Something flickered across her face—not fear, not yet, but the first crack in her performance. She hadn't expected me to hold still. She turned and left without another word, already reaching for her phone.

Roland arrived eleven minutes later.

I knew it was eleven because I'd been timing Amos's medication schedule when the door slammed open hard enough to rattle the herb jars on the shelf. Roland filled the doorway, chest heaving, eyes already lit with the particular fury he reserved for being disobeyed.

"You humiliated her," he said.

"I told her the truth."

He crossed the room in three strides. I didn't step back. I should have.

The slap came fast—open palm, full weight behind it. My head snapped sideways. The sound cracked through the small room like a branch breaking, sharp enough that someone near the door gasped. My cheek bloomed hot, then numb, then hot again.

I didn't fall. I made myself not fall.

"Vacate the pack house," Roland said, and his voice dropped, sliding into the register that wasn't a voice at all anymore but a command, Alpha tone pouring out of him and slamming into the half-severed thread still hanging between us. "By dawn."

My body obeyed before my mind could object. My feet turned toward the door. My legs started moving, muscles locking into compliance I hadn't chosen, the bond—dead, but not dead enough—dragging me forward like a hook through the ribs.

I heard, distantly, the rustle of sheets. Amos, too weak to lift himself more than an inch off the pillow, straining anyway, his mouth opening around a sound that didn't have strength behind it. I couldn't look at him. I couldn't look at anyone. My eyes were fixed on the door, on the hallway beyond it, my body carrying me toward an exit I hadn't agreed to take.

Then something in my chest split open.

It wasn't a shift. Not yet. It was heat—sudden, violent, a flare of something ancient clawing up from wherever my wolf had been lying collapsed and silent since the rejection. For one heartbeat she was there again, snarling, furious, shredding through the compliance Roland's tone had forced onto me like paper.

My feet stopped. Three steps from the door.

I turned around.

Roland's face went through three expressions in half a second—confusion, then disbelief, then something closer to alarm, because Alpha tone wasn't supposed to be resistible, not from a mate, not even a rejected one.

The room had gone utterly silent. Even Camryn, standing just behind him in her pale, borrowed authority, didn't move.

"I'll be gone before dawn," I said. My voice came out quiet. Quiet enough that everyone in the room had to lean in to catch it, and that quiet did more than shouting ever could have. "But so will every alliance that kept this pack fed."

I didn't wait for him to answer. I walked out, past the warriors who wouldn't look at me, past the doorway where Amos had turned his face to the wall—not away from me, I understood, but away from his son, like he couldn't bear to watch what Roland had become in the same body he used to carry as a boy.

Behind me, my wolf went silent again.

But it wasn't the same silence as before. It didn't feel collapsed anymore. It felt coiled, waiting, counting down alongside me.
