Chapter 3

The outbuilding smelled like dirt and old wood. It sat at the edge of the stripped herb garden, a storage shed Roland's maintenance crew had stopped using years ago because the roof leaked. I'd patched the leak myself that first night with salvaged tar paper and a prayer. It wasn't much. Four walls, a cot, a single window that faced the greenhouse where I used to grow moonroot under glass. The greenhouse was empty now. Camryn had taken everything.

I didn't mind the smallness. Small meant I could see every corner at once. Small meant no one could walk up behind me.

I spread the contents of my leather satchel across the plank floor: the warded recording crystal, the emergency moonroot supply wrapped in oilcloth, a blank journal I'd kept tucked in the false bottom for years. I sat cross-legged and began to write.

Not a diary. A map.

Every alliance Ironvale held, I wrote from memory. The Ashwood pact—negotiated after their Beta's son was injured in our territory, clause seventeen stipulating shared patrol costs that Roland had never read. The Silver Ridge trade route—my suggestion to offer them first refusal on our textile exports in exchange for their grain surplus during the drought two summers ago. Thornwall's defensive agreement, the one that hinged on a personal relationship I'd built with their Luna over correspondence that Roland didn't know existed.

I wrote for three hours. My hand cramped. I didn't stop.

When I finished, I had sixteen pages of intelligence that existed nowhere else in Ironvale's records. Border vulnerabilities Roland had never bothered to memorize because I'd always handled patrol schedules. Treaty clauses he'd signed without reading because I'd summarized them for him in single sentences. The entire architecture of Ironvale's standing, documented in my handwriting, sealed in a second warded container I tucked beside the crystal.

I wasn't building a defense. I was building an offer.

Someone would come looking for this information eventually. When they did, I would be ready.

---

Grant Whitfield found Roland in his office two days later, surrounded by correspondence he couldn't answer.

I wasn't there to see it. Faye told me later, her voice low and tight, after she'd come to collect the morning's moonroot dose for Amos. But I could picture it perfectly: Grant's careful knock, the stack of treaty inquiries balanced in his arms, Roland's face going blank as he tried to locate clause references that didn't exist in any file he could access.

"The Thornwall Alpha is asking about amendment protocols," Grant had said, reading from the top letter. "He's citing section four, subsection C. I can't find section four in our records."

Roland had stared at the page. "It has to be there."

"It's not, Alpha." Grant's tone had been carefully neutral. "Luna Sutton handled most of the Thornwall negotiations personally. If the language isn't in our archives—"

"Don't call her that." Roland's voice had gone sharp. "She's not Luna anymore."

Grant had set the stack on the desk. Sixteen letters, Faye said. Sixteen packs, all asking questions Roland couldn't answer without me. "Perhaps we should document her involvement," Grant had suggested. "For continuity."

Roland had dismissed him with Alpha tone. The command had been blunt enough that Grant left the letters where they sat and withdrew without another word, his expression—Faye had watched through the doorway—troubled in a way she'd never seen from Roland's steady, loyal Beta before.

The letters were still on the desk when I walked past the pack house that evening. I could see them through the window, a white stack illuminated by lamplight, untouched.

I kept walking.

---

Camryn started her campaign the same day Grant brought the letters.

I heard it first from an Omega in the kitchens—a young wolf named Tess who still nodded to me when no one was looking. She'd been carrying linens past the common room when Camryn's voice had drifted through the open door, sweet and sorrowful.

"It's tragic, really," Camryn had been saying to a cluster of Delta wolves. "Her wolf must have been defective all along. The Moon Goddess saw it. That's why the bond broke so easily."

Someone had murmured agreement. Tess hadn't been able to tell who.

"She was always a rogue playing at being Luna," Camryn had continued. "We just didn't want to say it out loud."

The words spread fast. By nightfall, I'd heard three different pack members repeat variations of the same line. Lower-ranked wolves, mostly. The kind who needed Roland's favor to keep their positions. They echoed Camryn's sentiment in careful, public spaces where being overheard was the point.

But the older wolves—the ones who'd been in Ironvale long enough to remember the Ashwood skirmish, the drought, the border disputes I'd quietly resolved—they stayed silent. I saw it in their faces when I passed them on the grounds. Not agreement. Discomfort. The kind that came from knowing something was wrong but not knowing how to say it without consequences.

I didn't correct the rumors. There was no point. They would believe what they needed to believe until they couldn't anymore.

---

Roland barred me from the infirmary on the sixth day.

The decree came by formal notice, delivered by a Delta wolf who wouldn't meet my eyes. No rejected mate was to enter pack medical facilities without explicit Alpha permission. It was phrased as protocol. It was punishment.

I'd expected it. I'd already arranged for Faye to collect Amos's doses each morning, tucking the dried moonroot into a plain cloth bag she carried under the pretense of personal visits. But the decree cut his treatment schedule in half. I couldn't risk giving Faye more than one dose at a time—if Roland caught her with a stockpile, he'd confiscate it, and then Amos would have nothing.

Four days later, Faye came to the outbuilding with trembling hands.

"He's getting worse," she said. Her voice cracked. "His hands shake at meals. His wolf—Sutton, I can barely feel his wolf anymore."

I handed her the next dose. It felt impossibly small in my palm. "This is all I can give you safely."

"It's not enough."

"I know."

She looked at me, her eyes red-rimmed, and I saw the question she didn't ask: *How much longer can you keep him alive like this?*

I didn't have an answer.

She left without another word, clutching the cloth bag to her chest like it was the only thing holding her together.

I watched her go, then turned back to the outbuilding. The warded containers sat in the corner, waiting. The intelligence I'd compiled. The recording that would destroy Roland and Camryn both.

I wasn't ready to use them yet. But I was getting close.

Something was coming. I could feel it in the air, in the way the pack's rhythm had started to fracture, in the silence of wolves who used to trust their Alpha and didn't anymore.

I just had to wait for the right moment.

And I was very, very good at waiting.
