Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of three hundred witnesses.

I stood on the ceremonial dais beside Roland, the mate mark warm against my neck, watching the Ironvale Pack gather in the torch-lit clearing for the annual Mate Ceremony. I'd spent two weeks organizing every detail—the floral arrangements, the blessing wine, the seating arrangements for visiting dignitaries. Roland hadn't asked about any of it. He never did.

Mid-rite, Camryn Perkins collapsed on the ceremonial grounds.

She hit the grass hard, screaming that a rogue had breached the perimeter and attacked her. Her hands clutched her side where ugly welts bloomed across her ribs—dark, blistered, angry. The crowd surged forward. Roland was off the dais before I could blink, dropping to his knees beside her.

My wolf stirred, uneasy.

I stepped to the edge of the platform and breathed in. The scent hit me wrong—not the iron tang of rogue claws, but something sharper, chemical. Wolfsbane. Diluted, applied topically to mimic trauma. I'd treated enough real rogue attacks in the infirmary to know the difference.

"Roland," I said quietly. "Those wounds—"

He didn't look at me. "Open the vault," he snapped at Grant, his Beta. "Bring everything we have."

Grant hesitated, glancing at me. "Alpha, the reserves are—"

"Now."

Grant disappeared into the pack house. I descended the dais steps, my pulse starting to hammer. "Roland, wait. Those herbs are the only treatment keeping your father alive. Camryn's injuries can be managed with common remedies. If you take the moonroot and silverleaf—"

Roland's head snapped toward me. His eyes were flat. "Are you questioning my judgment?"

"I'm telling you what will happen if—"

"Enough." His voice dropped into Alpha tone, the command slamming into my chest like a fist. My body locked rigid. My wolf whimpered and flattened inside me, forced into submission by the mate bond amplifying his authority over my will.

Grant returned with a wooden case. Inside, every cutting, every dried bundle I'd spent years cultivating. Moonroot with its pale, fibrous roots. Silverleaf with its faint metallic sheen. I'd grown them in the greenhouse behind the pack house, coaxing them through failed seasons and frost, because Amos's degenerating wolf couldn't survive without them.

Roland took the case and handed it to Camryn. She clutched it to her chest, eyes wide and wet, her breathing shallow and performative. "Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you, Alpha."

I couldn't move. The Alpha tone still held me in place, my muscles trembling with the effort of trying to break free. "Roland," I managed, my voice shaking. "Your father—"

"My father," Roland said, standing, "would want me to protect this pack. Camryn was attacked on our grounds. That's a failure of security I won't tolerate."

He turned to face the crowd. The ceremonial torches cast his shadow long across the grass. I saw the decision in his shoulders before he spoke.

"I, Roland, Alpha of Ironvale," he said, his voice carrying across the clearing, "reject you, Sutton Hayes, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Not painful. Not burning. Just—empty. Like a door slamming shut in a room I didn't know I was standing in. My wolf screamed inside my head, a sound so raw it tore through my consciousness, and then she collapsed into silence. The bond that had hummed beneath my skin for nine years went slack and dead.

I staggered. My hand flew to my neck, pressing against the scar that was already cooling, the raised edges of the bite going numb under my fingertips.

The crowd was silent. I could feel their stares, three hundred wolves watching me unravel in real time.

I looked at Camryn. She was still on the ground, still clutching the herb case, but her eyes weren't on Roland anymore. They were on me. And there was no pain in them. Only triumph.

I dropped my hand from my neck. My legs were shaking, but I forced them steady. I would not break here. Not in front of them.

I turned and walked off the ceremonial grounds. My back was straight. My steps were even. I did not look back.

Behind me, I heard Roland's voice resume the rite, smooth and untroubled, as if nothing had happened.

---

I made it to my quarters before my knees gave out.

The room was dark. I didn't bother with the lights. I sank onto the edge of the bed and pressed my palms against my thighs, trying to breathe through the hollow ache spreading through my chest. My wolf was gone. Not dead—I could still feel her, distant and curled tight—but unreachable, like she'd retreated so far inside me I'd never find her again.

The scar on my neck was cold. I touched it again, tracing the shape of Roland's bite. It felt like someone else's skin.

I sat there for a long time, staring at nothing.

Then I stood up.

I crossed to the wardrobe and pulled out the small wooden box I kept hidden beneath a false bottom in the lowest drawer. Inside was the spelled recording crystal I'd planted on Camryn three weeks ago, after I'd caught Roland's scent on her coat in the pack house hallway.

I activated the crystal.

Camryn's voice filled the room, tinny but clear. *"—just need to make it look real. Diluted wolfsbane on the skin, not ingested. It'll blister but won't scar. He'll have no choice but to act."*

Another voice, male. *"And if she protests?"*

*"She always protests. He never listens."*

Laughter.

Then Roland's voice, low and intimate. *"Sutton's a useful rogue who outlived her usefulness. Once you're Luna, we won't have to pretend anymore."*

I stopped the playback.

My hands were steady. My breathing was even. The hollow ache in my chest had crystallized into something sharper, colder.

I sealed the crystal in a warded container and tucked it into the leather satchel I always carried—the one that held my emergency supply of dried moonroot, the small reserve I'd been hoarding on my person for years. Roland didn't know about it. He'd never asked how the herb reserves were replenished. He'd never asked about anything I did.

I pulled out a blank sheet of correspondence paper and began to write.

*To Alpha Garrett of Silver Ridge: The architect of your trade alliance with Ironvale is no longer recognized by Ironvale's sitting Alpha. Please direct all future inquiries accordingly.*

I wrote three more. One to Ashwood. One to Thornwall. One to Coldbrook.

I didn't ask them to sever ties. I didn't need to. They would draw their own conclusions.

By dawn, I'd sealed and sent all four messages.

By dawn, Roland's empire—my empire, the one I'd built with my own hands—had already begun to crumble.
