Chapter 3

I couldn't sleep after the run.

Gabrielle's guest room was warm and quiet, Barnaby snoring at the foot of the bed, but my skin felt too tight, like something under it was still moving. Around midnight I gave up pretending. I pulled my boots back on and walked out into the dark without waking anyone.

The shift came easier this time. No cracking hesitation, no panic that I'd forgotten how. My wolf simply rose, fast and eager, like she'd been standing at a starting line her whole life waiting for someone to finally say go.

*There you are,* I thought, and she answered me.

Not a feeling. Not an instinct. Words, clear as a bell, in a voice that was mine and not mine at once.

*We were never weak,* she said. *He made us small so he could feel big.*

I stopped running for a moment, standing in a moonlit clearing with snow melting under my paws, and let that sink all the way down. Seven years. Seven years of treatments that left scars I hid, of shrinking myself into a shape that wouldn't outgrow his hands, of believing the dimming was mine to fix. It had never been mine at all.

Then I ran. I ran until the trees blurred into silver streaks and my lungs burned clean instead of raw, until the eastern sky went from black to bruised purple to gold. I didn't stop because I was tired. I stopped because the sun told me it was time.

When I shifted back at the tree line, hands braced on my knees, breath clouding in the cold morning air, I felt the same quiet composure settle over me that always had. But underneath it now was something new. Clean. Cold. Permanent.

I would never let anyone make me small again.

Silvercrest's gates were taller than Ironvale's, wrought iron instead of timber, and they opened before I'd even reached them.

Declan was standing just inside.

A young Beta beside him did a poor job hiding his surprise. "Alpha, I can process her intake, you don't need—"

"I know I don't need to," Declan said, without looking away from me.

I set my bag down and let Barnaby sniff the gatepost. "You didn't have to meet me personally," I said.

"I wanted to see the door get walked through." His voice was quiet, load-bearing, the kind that didn't need volume to land. "Welcome to Silvercrest, Ms. Hamilton."

The appointment happened faster than I expected. By that evening I had a title—Luna-Advisor, full strategic authority, access to the pack's entire intelligence network—and a folder from Declan's Beta confirming my quiet nomination to the Lycan Council as regional arbiter. No fanfare. No announcement to the northeastern packs yet. Just paperwork, precise and clean, like Gabrielle would have drafted it herself.

"You could have made this a production," I told Declan, scanning the file in his strategy room.

"Productions are for people who need convincing," he said. "I already read your work."

The war council briefing ran four hours.

I walked them through territory contingencies, resource allocation models, the flaw in their eastern border rotation that three of their own strategists had apparently argued about for a year without resolving. I didn't raise my voice once. I didn't need to.

"She's right," said a grey-haired man named Foster, tapping the map. "She's been right for forty minutes straight and I hate it."

Another strategist, younger, leaned back in his chair. "Alpha, with respect—I've sat through a hundred of these briefings. I've never seen anyone move through a battle map like that."

Declan said nothing. He didn't need to agree out loud. I caught him watching me the way he'd watch a piece move exactly where he'd predicted, except I could tell some part of it surprised him anyway.

When the council finally broke, I went out to the training grounds behind the pack house, needing air, needing motion. Barnaby trotted beside me until I told him to stay, and then I shifted, alone, under Silvercrest's open sky.

I ran.

I didn't hold back this time. I let every ounce of what my wolf had been carrying loose into the ground—power that didn't ask permission, didn't apologize for its own size. The earth seemed to answer. I felt it in my paws, a low answering hum that rippled outward.

Inside the pack house, Declan told me later, every wolf on the property felt it. Warriors stopped mid-drill. Omegas in the kitchen went still, plates suspended in their hands. Something Alpha-class had just announced itself on Silvercrest land, and it wasn't him.

He was alone in the strategy room when the tremor hit, still reading my handwritten assessments, the paper faintly scented with cedar and honeysuckle he hadn't let himself name yet.

He went very still.

Then, slowly, he let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for longer than the last few minutes.
