Chapter 4

Declan didn't crowd me.

That was the first thing I noticed, and I kept noticing it. At Ironvale, Conrad had filled every room he entered—voice, aura, presence spilling into corners until there was no space left that wasn't his. Declan moved differently. He ensured doors were open, resources were available, intelligence files were on my desk before I thought to ask for them. Then he stepped back.

I'd been at Silvercrest for two weeks when I realized he'd read my regional threat assessment three times. I only knew because I'd left a handwritten note in the margin of page fourteen—a clarification I'd added after the original draft—and he referenced it in a council meeting with the kind of specificity that meant he'd absorbed every word.

"The eastern approach," he said, tapping the map, "relies on the phased fallback Ms. Hamilton outlined in her Q3 assessment. Page fourteen, if memory serves."

I looked up. He wasn't performing. Wasn't trying to impress me with his attention to detail. He'd simply done the work.

"Memory serves," I said.

His mouth didn't quite smile, but something shifted in his eyes. Approval, maybe. Or recognition.

My wolf lifted her head. Not with the anxious vigilance she'd learned under Conrad's incomplete bond, always waiting for criticism that came dressed as concern. This was different. Calmer. She was noticing something, and she wanted me to notice it too.

I wasn't ready to name what I noticed. But I noticed.

Later that week, Declan deployed his Alpha tone during a council session.

One of the senior warriors—a man named Garrett who'd clearly grown comfortable speaking over she-wolves—interrupted my supply-chain breakdown for the third time. I'd been explaining a critical bottleneck in the northern routes when he cut in with a condescending alternative that ignored half the variables I'd already addressed.

I stopped talking. Waited. Let the silence stretch.

Declan's voice came from the head of the table, quiet and absolutely final.

"Garrett. She wasn't finished."

The Alpha tone wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. The resonance hit the room like a physical weight, and Garrett's mouth snapped shut mid-word. The difference between this and Conrad's reflex dominance was so stark it made my chest ache. This was a choice. Declan had listened, assessed, and chosen to use his authority to protect my space rather than fill it.

Garrett looked down at his notes. "My apologies, Ms. Hamilton. Please continue."

I continued. My voice didn't shake. When I finished, Garrett nodded slowly and admitted the northern bottleneck was worse than he'd thought.

After the meeting, I found Declan in the hall.

"You didn't have to do that," I said.

"I know I didn't have to." He looked at me with that same steady attention that never felt like scrutiny. "But he interrupted you three times, and your analysis was correct. It seemed efficient."

Efficient. Not chivalrous. Not protective. Efficient.

I almost smiled. "Thank you."

"You're welcome."

He walked away before I could say anything else, and I stood there in the empty hallway feeling something I hadn't felt in seven years: seen.

The Pack Summit was six weeks out.

I knew because Gabrielle sent me the preliminary agenda with a note that said, *Ironvale submitted a last-minute alliance-bid proposal. No details yet, but the timing's suspicious.*

I read the note twice. Set my tea down carefully.

Conrad didn't have a viable strategy. I knew because I'd drafted every major framework Ironvale had used for the last seven years, and the unpublished work—the brilliant, multi-phase territorial defense I'd been refining in private—was still in my files. He couldn't have developed something new that fast. Not without me.

So what was he planning to present?

I didn't have to wait long for the answer.

It happened three nights later, while I was alone in Silvercrest's strategy room reviewing border patrol rotations. Barnaby was asleep under the desk. The pack house was quiet. I was deep in a logistics spreadsheet when the mind-link fragment flared.

I'd thought it was dead. The bond had severed cleanly when I walked out of Ironvale. But the incomplete marking—the ritual Conrad had refused to finish for seven years—left scar tissue. Residual pathways that occasionally flickered like phantom limbs.

This wasn't a flicker. This was a door cracking open.

Conrad's voice hit me like cold water.

"—the third phase relies on simultaneous pressure from both flanks. You need to sell the timing, Piper. Make them believe you thought of it."

Piper's voice, younger, uncertain: "What if someone asks about the resource calculations? I don't—"

"No one will ask. They'll be too impressed by the framework. And even if they do, you defer to me. We're a team, remember? You present, I support, we win the alliance seat."

I went absolutely still.

They were rehearsing. In the Alpha quarters. Late at night. And the framework Piper was memorizing—the phasing structure, the flank terminology, the resource calculations she didn't understand—was mine.

My unpublished work. The strategy I'd been refining for two years, that I'd kept in handwritten drafts because I'd learned early that a physical document bearing my wolf's scent signature was harder to dispute.

Conrad had kept those drafts. I'd seen them on his desk the night I left, and I'd assumed he'd filed them or destroyed them. I hadn't assumed he'd give them to her.

"She'll never know," Conrad said, and I heard the smile in his voice. "She's done. No pack, no credibility, no way to prove it was hers even if she tried. This is ours now."

My hands were shaking. Not from grief. From rage so clean and cold it felt like clarity.

I reached for my phone. Opened the recording app. And I waited.

The mind-link fragment stayed open for eleven more minutes. Long enough for Conrad to coach Piper through the key tactical points, to reassure her that no one would believe a "weak, discarded Luna" over a sitting Alpha and his promising new advisor, to laugh—actually laugh—about how Isla Hamilton's best work would finally get the recognition it deserved under someone else's name.

When the link finally closed, I sat in the silent strategy room with my phone in my hand and the recording saved, timestamped, backed up to three separate locations.

Barnaby lifted his head and whined softly.

"It's okay," I told him. My voice was steady. Calm. "I know exactly what to do."

I opened a new message to Gabrielle: *Need you to pull the original drafts from my Ironvale files. All of them. Scent-signature documentation, timestamps, witness statements from any healer who saw me working on them during treatment sessions. And I need the Lycan Council's Summit protocol handbook. Specifically the section on intellectual theft and alliance-bid fraud.*

Her response came in less than a minute: *On it. What did he do?*

I typed carefully: *He's going to present my strategy as Piper's work at the Summit. He thinks I can't prove it's mine.*

Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.

Then: *Oh, Isla. He has no idea what's coming, does he?*

I looked at the phone. At the recording. At the strategy room around me that smelled like Silvercrest's cedar and snow instead of Ironvale's smoke and old authority.

*No,* I typed back. *He really doesn't.*
