Chapter 2

Conrad returned to the Alpha quarters forty minutes after I left. I know because the mind-link flared once—a sharp, furious pulse that hit like a slap—before dissolving into static.

I was already at Gabrielle's safe house by then, sitting on her spare bed with Barnaby's head in my lap and my phone face-down on the nightstand. The bond fragment that had connected us for seven years crackled and died. I felt it go. It didn't hurt the way I'd expected. It felt like setting down a weight I'd been carrying so long I'd forgotten it wasn't part of my body.

Gabrielle walked in with two mugs of tea and a manila folder thick enough to be a weapon.

"He found them," she said. Not a question.

"Yes."

She set one mug in front of me and opened the folder. Bank statements. Treatment records. Witness depositions from pack healers who'd administered bond-strengthening procedures while Conrad was training late. Gabrielle's handwriting covered the margins in precise legal shorthand.

"The asset transfers clear tomorrow morning," she said. "Your personal accounts are isolated. The Lycan Council has the preliminary separation filing. He can't touch any of it."

I looked at the documents. My name, repeated across page after page in formal pack legal script. Evidence of seven years I'd spent building someone else's legacy while mine went dormant.

"What's he saying?" I asked.

Gabrielle's mouth thinned. "That you left due to personal weakness and deteriorating wolf health. That he'd been managing the situation for months. That your departure was inevitable."

I felt my wolf stir. Still quiet. Still waiting. But the anger was there now, low and steady like coals.

"And Piper?"

"Installed in an advisory role within forty-eight hours." Gabrielle's voice was flat. "He's fast, I'll give him that. The optics are exactly what you'd expect. Young, promising trainee stepping up to support a struggling Alpha. Very heroic."

I took a sip of tea. It was too hot and I barely tasted it.

"The pack gossip?"

Gabrielle hesitated. That told me everything.

"Say it," I said.

"Weak, jealous, discarded Luna who couldn't hold her Alpha." She met my eyes. "It's moving through the northeastern territories fast. You know how whisper networks are."

I did know. I'd watched them operate for seven years from the other side—the pitied wives, the replaced she-wolves, the ones who left or were asked to leave. I'd told myself I was different. I'd been wrong.

"Good," I said.

Gabrielle blinked. "Good?"

"Let them say it. Let them believe it." I set the mug down with careful precision. "I don't need to correct them yet."

She studied me for a long moment, then smiled—sharp and approving. "You're going to be terrifying when you're ready."

"I know."

I didn't read the gossip threads. Didn't check the pack social channels. Didn't respond to the few messages that trickled in from Ironvale wolves who'd worked with me, asking if I was okay, if the rumors were true, if I needed anything. I made Barnaby a scrambled egg on Sunday morning, the way I always did, and the routine felt like an anchor.

Three weeks after I left Ironvale, I forced myself on a solo run.

Gabrielle had offered to come. I'd declined. I needed to be alone for this. Needed to see what my wolf was without Conrad's presence pressing down on her like a hand on the back of her neck.

The northeastern forest was cold and empty. I stripped at the tree line, folded my clothes with the same methodical care I'd used packing my duffel, and called the shift.

Nothing happened.

I tried again. Felt my wolf stir, hesitant, like she'd forgotten how. Panic flickered in my chest—maybe Conrad had been right, maybe the treatments had damaged something, maybe I really was—

And then the bond's suppressive weight, the incomplete marking that had strangled her growth for seven years, finally snapped.

The shift didn't come. It erupted.

Bones cracked and reformed with seismic force. My spine arched. Luminous silver-white fur flooded in like wildfire, and the wolf that rose was massive—easily two and a half meters, dwarfing any Alpha female I'd ever seen. My vision sharpened. My senses exploded outward. I could smell everything—the moss, the snow, the distant pack boundaries, the faint ghost of Conrad's territory miles behind me.

And I could feel her. My wolf. Not weakening. Not dimming.

Free.

The howl tore out of me before I could think. It carried for miles, raw and triumphant and furious, flattening birds from trees and shaking snow from branches. Every wolf within range would hear it. Every wolf within range would feel it.

Let them.

I ran. Fast and hard and wild, tearing through the forest with a power I'd forgotten I had. My wolf was laughing—actually laughing, a sound like thunder rolling through my chest. We didn't stop until the sun started to set and my muscles burned.

When I shifted back, I was shaking. Not from exhaustion. From relief.

I pulled my clothes on slowly, my hands still trembling. My phone buzzed in my jacket pocket. A message from Gabrielle: *Felt that from here. You okay?*

I typed back: *Better than okay.*

Another message came through immediately, this one from a number I didn't recognize. The area code was Silvercrest.

*Alpha Declan would like to speak with you at your earliest convenience. No pressure. The door is still open.*

I stared at the message for a long moment. Then I smiled.

*Tomorrow,* I typed. *I'll be there tomorrow.*
