Chapter 1

I smelled it before I saw anything.

The scent hit me the moment I pushed open the door to the Alpha quarters—synthetic vanilla and oat milk layered over something that tried, desperately and badly, to pass for cedar. My wolf stirred low in my chest with a nauseated growl I felt more than heard. She'd been so quiet lately. Weakening, Conrad said. Dimming. I'd told myself he was wrong, that the bond-strengthening treatments would work eventually, that patience was the answer.

But she wasn't weak now. She was angry.

I set my supply logistics binder on the entry table with careful precision and stepped fully into the quarters. The scent was everywhere. Couch cushions. Doorframes. The armchair where Conrad's pack jacket lay draped like an invitation. I traced the smell with the methodical focus I usually reserved for pack strategy reviews, cataloging each contaminated surface. Someone had been here. Someone had marked my territory.

And then I saw her.

Piper Ramos was stretched across the couch in the center of the room, phone in hand, wearing Conrad's pack jacket. She looked up when I entered, and the studied casualness in her posture told me everything I needed to know. This wasn't accidental. She'd staged this scene and waited to be found.

"Oh," she said, with a little surprised lilt that would have been convincing if I hadn't spent seven years learning to read pack politics. "Isla. I didn't think you'd be back so soon."

I didn't answer immediately. My wolf was still growling, low and continuous, like distant thunder. I looked at Piper—really looked. She was young. Pretty in an unfinished way. Her scent profile was wrong, artificial, but I could see the calculation in it now. The vanilla. The oat milk. The false cedar note that approximated, badly, the mate scent Conrad had once told me he could find in a crowded room with his eyes closed.

She'd tried to smell like me.

"Where's Conrad?" My voice came out even. Flat. I was proud of that.

"Training," Piper said, shifting slightly so the pack jacket—his pack jacket, with his scent and his authority woven into every fiber—draped more visibly across her shoulders. "He said he'd be late. He's been working so hard lately." She paused, and her eyes flicked to mine with something that might have been pity or might have been triumph. "You know how he is."

I did know. Training late. Always training late. I'd told myself it was the weight of leadership, the regional alliances, the responsibilities that came with being Alpha of a pack as powerful as Ironvale had become. I'd told myself a lot of things.

Something in me went absolutely quiet.

Not shattered. Not broken. Just... quiet. Like a door closing very softly in a distant room.

"Right," I said.

I walked past her into the bedroom. She didn't follow. I moved through the space with methodical precision—the same precision I used when drafting battle strategies, when managing pack supply chains, when enduring the bond-strengthening treatments alone in the healers' quarters while Conrad trained late. I pulled my duffel from the closet. Folded my clothes. Collected the handwritten strategy drafts from the desk drawer, each one bearing my wolf's unique scent signature, each one representing hours of work Conrad had praised in public and dismissed in private.

I heard Piper shift on the couch. Heard her phone buzz. She didn't leave.

Good. I wanted her to see this.

I clipped Barnaby's leash—my golden retriever raised his head from his bed in the corner, tail wagging uncertainly—and led him into the main room. Piper was still there, still wearing the jacket, still performing casual ownership of a space that had been mine for seven years.

I set the duffel by the door. Walked to the kitchen island. Pulled the rejection documents from my bag—I'd had them prepared for six months, signed and witnessed by Gabrielle, because some part of me had known this was coming even when I couldn't admit it—and placed them on the counter with careful alignment. The paper made a soft sound against the stone.

Piper's eyes widened. "Isla—"

"Tell Conrad I left them where he'll see them," I said. My voice was still even. Still flat. "He'll know what they are."

I picked up the duffel. Took Barnaby's leash. Walked to the door.

"You're just leaving?" Piper's voice had lost its casual edge. She sounded younger suddenly. Uncertain.

I looked back at her once. She was small on the couch, swimming in Conrad's jacket, her synthetic scent already fading against the quarters' familiar smells. She looked like a girl playing dress-up in someone else's life.

"Yes," I said.

And I walked out of Ironvale territory without a single backward glance.

The forest was dark and cold. Barnaby pressed against my leg as I pulled out my phone and called the one person who'd been waiting for this call for six months.

Gabrielle picked up on the first ring.

"I'm pulling the asset documents tonight," she said, before I could speak. No comfort. Just logistics. "Where are you sleeping?"

I gave her coordinates. My voice didn't shake.

"Good," Gabrielle said. "I'll meet you in an hour. Isla—"

"I know," I said.

I ended the call. Stood in the tree line with Barnaby's warm weight against my leg and the rejection documents cooling on Conrad's kitchen counter behind me. My wolf was still quiet. Not weak. Not dimming.

Waiting.

I didn't cry.
