Chapter 2

The silence between them stretched so thin it threatened to snap. Tristan’s iron grip on her waist didn't loosen, his muscular frame pinning her ruthlessly against the mahogany desk. He was waiting for her to break. He was waiting for the screaming, the insults, the familiar venom she had hurled at him for two years.

Instead, Leah slowly raised her hands from his broad shoulders. Softly, deliberately, she slid her arms up the column of his neck, her fingers tangling into the short, dark hair at the nape of his head. She leaned in, burying her face into the crook of his neck, breathing in the intoxicating, grounding scent of sandalwood and rain.

"I’m not leaving you, Tristan," she whispered against his skin. "Not tonight. Not ever again."

Tristan froze. Every muscle in his body turned to solid stone. For a fraction of a second, his breath hitched, a raw, primal reaction to her sudden, overwhelming proximity. But just as quickly, the shock vanished, replaced by an icy, lethal stillness. He didn't wrap his arms around her. He didn't soften.

He detached her hands from his neck with brutal precision, clamping his fingers around her wrists and forcing her arms down between them. His obsidian eyes flashed with deep mistrust.

"Don't touch me," he commanded, his voice dropping to a dangerously low baritone. "The affectionate act doesn't suit you, Leah. It makes you look desperate."

"It’s not an act," she said, her wrists still held tight in his grasp. She didn't flinch. "I know I’ve given you every reason to hate me. I know what I’ve said to you in this very room. But I’m telling you the truth."

Tristan let go of her wrists, stepping back a fraction of an inch, though he still crowded her space. A dark, humorless smirk played on his lips. "The truth? You don't know the meaning of the word. Who gave you this script? Was it Julian? Did he realize the corporate espionage charges wouldn't stick if we divorced, so he told you to play the doting wife to gather intelligence?"

"Julian is a snake, and I am done listening to him," Leah said fiercely, her voice ringing out with an urgency that caught Tristan off guard. "I don't care about the corporate shares, Tristan. I care about us."

"There is no *lus," Tristan hissed, leaning down until his lips almost brushed her ear. "There is a contract. There is an arrangement. And until five minutes ago, there was an impending exit strategy. If you think changing your tactics from a screaming child to a seductive spy will make me hand over the decryption keys to the AI mainframe, you have severely underestimated me."

He stepped back entirely, turning his back to her as he adjusted his charcoal suit jacket. The sheer distance felt like a physical blow to Leah’s chest.

"Get your things," Tristan said coldly, without looking at her. "The lawyers are gone, but my decision stands. Go back to the guest wing. I don't want you in my space."

Leah straightened her emerald silk gown, her jaw setting with a stubbornness she hadn't possessed in her first life. "No."

Tristan snapped his head back toward her, his brow furrowing in sharp irritation. "What did you say?"

"I said no," Leah repeated, walking past him toward the massive king-sized bed. She pulled back the heavy duvet and climbed in, settling against the plush pillows. She looked up at him, her green eyes defiant but laced with a profound, aching vulnerability. "This is our bedroom, Tristan. I am your wife. I’m staying here tonight."

Tristan stared at her, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides. For a fleeting moment, a dangerous spark of buried desire flared in the depths of his dark eyes, a remnants of the unrequited passion he had hidden behind his cold mask for years. He wanted to march over to that bed, to tear the sheets away, to demand she stop torturing him. But his paranoia, forged through years of corporate warfare and her systematic cruelty, slammed the door on his instincts.

"You want to play the devoted wife?" Tristan asked, his voice dripping with venomous sarcasm. "Fine. Stay in the room. Enjoy the bed."

He checked his platinum watch, his jaw tightly clenched. "An urgent server crisis just triggered an alert at the headquarters. The AI launch infrastructure is experiencing an anomaly. I have a corporate empire to run, Leah. I don't have time to sit here and watch you rehearse your next performance."

"Tristan, wait—" Leah began, half-rising from the pillows.

"Sleep well, wife," he interrupted, spitting the title out like a curse.

He turned on his heel, his long strides carrying him effortlessly across the sprawling room. The heavy oak doors opened and shut with a definitive, echoing slam, leaving Leah entirely alone in the suffocating silence of the penthouse master suite.

Leah let out a long, ragged breath, her shoulders sagging as the adrenaline began to fade. She slid out of the bed, her bare feet pressing against the cold hardwood floor. She needed to move. She needed to anchor herself in this reality.

Slowly, she began to explore the room, touching the objects she had either smashed or ignored in her past life. She walked over to the mahogany desk, running her fingers over the smooth wood. A few stray, jagged shreds of the divorce papers still clung to the edges. She picked one up, staring at her own handwritten name on the scrap before tossing it into the wastebasket.

She moved to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out at the glittering neon grid of the city. In her first life, she had stared out these exact windows feeling like a prisoner in a golden cage, plotting her escape with Julian. Now, the view filled her with a profound, terrifying sense of reverence. This city was Tristan's kingdom, a kingdom she had helped Julian burn to the ground.

She walked over to Tristan's private dressing room, pushing open the smoked-glass doors. Rows of perfectly tailored charcoal and black suits hung in pristine order, alongside crisp white shirts that smelled faintly of his sandalwood cologne. She reached out, pressing her palm against the fabric of one of his jackets, a sob catching in her throat.

I caused those dark circles under his eyes, she thought, the grief threatening to overwhelm her. I spent two years making his home a living hell while he was quietly trying to keep me safe from my own family.

She closed her eyes, remembering the sight of him bleeding out on that balcony, his eyes looking at her with nothing but absolute devotion. She gripped the suit jacket tighter. "I will fix this, Tristan," she whispered into the empty room. "I will make you believe me."

---

Downstairs, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Tristan walked into his private, dimly lit study, the door locking automatically behind him with a heavy electronic click. There was no server crisis. There was no infrastructure anomaly. The AI mainframe was running perfectly.

He didn't turn on the main lights. Instead, he poured himself three fingers of neat scotch from a crystal decanter, swallowing the amber liquid in a single, burning gulp. The alcohol did nothing to soothe the chaotic storm raging in his chest.

He could still feel the warmth of her arms around his neck. He could still feel the soft, frantic press of her body against his chest, the scent of her hair, the terrifying sincerity in her voice when she said she wasn't leaving. It was a sensation he had dreamed of for two agonizing years, a fantasy he had violently suppressed because he knew it was impossible.

Why now? his mind demanded. What changed between this morning and tonight?

She had been ruthless this morning, screaming at him over the phone, demanding the final draft of the settlement. She had looked at him with nothing but pure disgust when the lawyers arrived. And then, she woke up from a nightmare and tore up a multi-million-dollar exit strategy.

It didn't make sense. In Tristan’s world, sudden behavioral shifts only meant one thing: a shift in strategy. She had found a deadlier way to cut him.

Tristan slammed his empty glass onto the desk, pulling out a encrypted satellite phone from his drawer. He dialed a single, unlisted number.

The line rang twice before a gravelly, professional voice answered. "Sir."

"Marcus," Tristan said, his tone dropping into the cold, calculated frequency of a commander launching a war. "I need an immediate, absolute lockdown on my wife's profile."

A brief pause on the other end. "An asset freeze, Mr. Hampton?"

"No," Tristan hissed, his eyes staring blankly into the dark corner of the study. "I want a 24/7 technical and physical surveillance team placed on Leah. Every call she makes, every message she sends, every coordinate her vehicle touches—I want it routed directly to my personal device in real time."

"Understood, sir. Should we initiate standard corporate counter-intelligence protocols?"

"Go deeper," Tristan commanded, his jaw clenching tightly as the image of Leah's tear-filled green eyes flashed in his mind. "Run a deep-dive forensic audit on her personal bank accounts, her father’s firm, and every shell company associated with Julian. She met with someone, or she’s about to meet with someone. She’s playing a high-stakes game inside my house, Marcus."

"And if she attempts to leave the penthouse, sir?"

Tristan’s eyes darkened to a terrifying, pitch-black void. "Track her. Do not stop her, but do not let her out of your sight for a single second. My wife is colluding with an enemy to take down this empire from the inside, and I am going to catch her red-handed."

He ended the call, throwing the phone onto the desk. He leaned back in his chair, staring up at the dark ceiling, his heart hardening into an impenetrable wall of ice.

Upstairs, Leah was waiting for him. But downstairs, the hunt had already begun.

The bright morning sun cut through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse, blinding Leah as she sat at her vanity. She had barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, the vivid image of Tristan’s bleeding body on that rain-slicked balcony violently yanked her back to reality.

Suddenly, the sleek black smartphone on the marble counter began to buzz relentlessly.

Leah’s chest tightened as she looked down at the screen. A handsome, smiling portrait flashed alongside a name that made her blood run entirely cold: Julian.

In her past life, seeing his name would have brought a foolish, naive smile to her face. He was her childhood sweetheart, the man who had spent two years whispering sweet, poisonous promises into her ear, convincing her that Tristan was a monster holding her hostage. In reality, Julian was Tristan's highly trusted right-hand man, an executive VP who used Leah’s domestic tantrums as a smokescreen to systematically bleed Tristan's tech empire dry.

She let the phone vibrate against the marble, forcing herself to breathe through the sudden surge of adrenaline. Today was the day. According to the original timeline, Julian was expecting her to confirm she had signed the divorce papers so they could execute the final phase of their plan: leaking the proprietary schematics for Tristan’s new AI mainframe.

"Not this time," Leah whispered to her reflection.

She picked up a lipstick brush, applying a striking, matte crimson shade to her lips, a stark contrast to the soft, pale pinks she used to wear to look fragile for Julian. She pulled her dark hair back into a flawless, razor-sharp high ponytail, donned a structured cream blazer, and slipped on a pair of designer dark sunglasses. She was no longer a naive victim. She was rebuilding her outward high-society facade, transforming herself into a woman who could stand beside a billionaire predator.

On the twentieth buzz, she slid her thumb across the screen and pressed the phone to her ear.

"Leah! Good god, darling, why aren't you answering?" Julian’s voice burst through the receiver, smooth, practiced, and dripping with manicured anxiety. "I’ve been frantic. Did the tyrant sign them? Are you finally free from him?"

Leah gripped the edge of the marble counter, her knuckles turning white. Hearing his voice made her stomach twist in a violent knot of pure contempt. But she kept her tone flat, sharp, and ice-cold. "The divorce papers are taken care of, Julian."

"Fantastic!" Julian let out a breathy, triumphant laugh that made Leah want to scream. "I knew you could handle him. Bring the signed copies to my apartment right now. We need to go over the final file extraction before Tristan’s security team updates the mainframe firewall tonight. Leah? Are you listening to me?"

"I am listening," Leah said, her voice sounding like a knife cutting through silk. "And I am not coming to your apartment."

A brief, sharp silence on the line. "What? Why not? Darling, time is of the essence. Tristan is already getting suspicious of the logistics data leaks. If we don't move now—"

"Meet me at The Obsidian Cafe downtown. In thirty minutes," Leah interrupted, her words absolute. "And sit in the outdoor courtyard. I want a public space."

"The Obsidian? But Leah, that’s right in the center of the financial district! Tristan’s executives frequent that place. It’s too dangerous for us to be seen together."

"Take it or leave it, Julian," Leah said coldly. "If you aren't there in thirty minutes, you can forget about the files entirely."

Before he could protest, she slammed the phone down, ending the call. Her heart was hammering, but her mind was entirely clear.

Leah walked out of the master suite and took the private elevator down to the penthouse garage. Sitting in the security office near the entrance was Christian, Tristan's personal head driver and a former military contractor.

"Good morning, Mrs. Hampton," Christian said, stepping out of the office with a polite, neutral nod. "Mr. Hampton instructed me to remain at the penthouse today in case you required transport."

"Good morning, Christian," Leah said, sliding her sunglasses up her nose. "I do need a ride. Please take me to The Obsidian Cafe downtown."

Christian’s eyebrows rose by a fraction of a millimeter. He knew, just as Tristan knew, that Julian's private office was only two blocks away from that cafe. "Right away, ma'am. I’ll bring the armored sedan around."

As she climbed into the luxurious, leather-scented interior of the black sedan, Leah looked at the dashboard console. She knew with absolute certainty that the vehicle's GPS tracking matrix was currently broadcasting her exact coordinates directly to Tristan’s personal tablet. Tristan’s 24/7 surveillance team was watching her move. She wanted him to see this. She wanted him to know exactly where she was going, using his own assets to corner her enemy.

The drive through the bustling financial district was suffocatingly tense. Leah looked out the rear window and quickly spotted a nondescript black SUV keeping a precise three-car distance behind them. Tristan's security detail was tailing her, watching her every turn like a hawk.

Watch me, Tristan, Leah thought, her jaw clenching as she stared at the reflection of the tracking vehicle. Watch me cut the strings of the puppet master.

Ten minutes later, the sedan pulled up to the curb in front of The Obsidian Cafe, a highly exclusive, minimalist outdoor venue bounded by manicured hedges and black marble water features. The elite of the city’s business world sat at the scattered tables, sipping espresso and talking strategy.

Christian opened the door for her. "I will park nearby, Mrs. Hampton. Press the panic fob on your keys if you need immediate extraction."

"Thank you, Christian. I won't be long," Leah said.

She stepped onto the pavement, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the stone tiles as she swept into the cafe’s courtyard. Her sharp, structured outfit and striking red lips drew the immediate attention of several prominent socialites, but Leah ignored them entirely. Her eyes were locked onto a corner table nestled beneath a large black umbrella.

Sitting there, checking his gold Rolex with a frantic, agitated expression, was Julian. He looked exactly as he had in her first life, impeccably groomed in a tailored blue suit, with sandy hair and a charming, boy-next-door smile that hid a black, parasitic soul.

As Leah approached, Julian looked up. His eyes brightened with a practiced, dramatic relief, and he immediately stood up, opening his arms to welcome her.

"Leah, thank God," Julian sighed, stepping forward and reaching out with both hands to grasp her fingers. "You have no idea how much I’ve worried about you in that house with that monster. Give me the papers, darling, let’s get you away from him."

Leah didn't smile. She didn't step into his embrace.

With a smooth, ice-cold motion, she pulled her hands back out of his reach, her expression completely unreadable behind her dark sunglasses. Before Julian could react to the rejection, Leah reached into her designer handbag, pulled out a small, sleek digital voice recorder, and slid it firmly across the marble table, letting it rest right in front of him.

The digital screen on the recorder glowed a bright, ominous red. [RECORDING].

Julian’s charming smile instantly faltered, his eyes darting down to the device as his face turned incredibly pale. "Leah... what is this?"
