My Fiancé Paid to Destroy Me Chapter 1

A bead of liquid silver solder bloomed perfectly across the copper contact of the vintage 1980s server motherboard. The familiar, sharp tang of ozone and melting rosin filled my lungs—the scent of resurrection. I wiped a stray curl from my forehead with the back of my wrist, careful not to smudge thermal paste on my skin.

"Your bare-handed precision is... extraordinary. Most engineers would shake holding a component that fragile."

I looked up through the curling gray smoke. Ezekiel Graham stood in the doorway of my salvage yard office, a pristine anomaly against the towering mountains of rusted e-waste behind him. The owner of the artisanal café next door wore a perfectly pressed charcoal vest, holding a steaming, ceramic cup of his signature black roast.

"Gloves dull the tactile feedback," I said, setting my iron in its cradle. I accepted the coffee, our fingers briefly brushing. His hands were immaculate, yet he never looked at my grease-stained knuckles with anything less than absolute reverence.

Before I could take a sip, my phone vibrated against the metal workbench. Nathaniel’s name flashed across the cracked screen.

I answered, pressing the phone to my ear. "Hey, I'm just finishing up a—"

"Savannah, what is that god-awful grinding noise?" Nathaniel’s voice snapped through the speaker, tight and irritated. In the background, an excavator was moving a pile of copper wiring.

"It's just the yard, Nate. Albert is moving the—"

"I don't care," he interrupted. "Clean yourself up. Tonight is my MBA alumni dinner at The Sovereign. Wear the navy dress, and for God's sake, scrub your fingernails. I can't have my colleagues hearing that embarrassing scrapyard racket through the phone."

The line went dead before I could reply. I stared at the dark screen, the heat in my chest warring with the cooling breeze from the open garage door. Ezekiel quietly set a fresh paper napkin on my desk. He didn't say a word, but the deep, knowing empathy in his dark eyes made my throat tighten.

Three hours later, the heavy crystal chandeliers of The Sovereign cast a harsh, unforgiving light on my modest navy dress. I sat stiffly beside Nathaniel in the private dining room, hyper-aware of the faint, stubborn shadows of grease embedded deep in my cuticles. I tucked my hands beneath the linen tablecloth.

Nathaniel was in his element, wearing the bespoke Tom Ford suit I had bought him last Christmas using three months of salvaged copper profits. He didn't look at me. His eyes were fixed on the restaurant entrance.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and the atmosphere in the room instantly shifted.

Kylee Larson glided in, wrapped in an oversized trench coat that screamed European luxury, though the stiff drape of the fabric whispered knock-off to my trained eye. Nathaniel’s former classmate had just returned from London, playing the role of a wealthy heiress to perfection.

"Nate!" Kylee purred, her accent heavily affected as she bypassed three open chairs to squeeze into the space beside him.

"Kylee. You look incredible," Nathaniel breathed, his posture straightening. The warmth in his voice—a warmth I hadn't heard in months—felt like a physical blow to my ribs.

Kylee finally turned her gaze to me, her perfectly manicured eyebrows arching. She extended a hand. Reluctantly, I brought my right hand out from under the table to accept it. As our palms met, Kylee’s gaze dropped to the faint calluses on my fingers. She visually recoiled, withdrawing her hand as if she had touched something diseased.

"Oh," Kylee said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "You must be the... mechanic girlfriend. Nathaniel told me you work in a scrap yard. I suppose there's a certain charming, filthy authenticity to blue-collar labor."

My jaw tightened. "I run an e-waste salvage and tech restoration business."

Nathaniel let out a sharp, nervous laugh, leaning away from me to align his shoulders with Kylee's. "She plays with old computers, Ky. It's just a hobby."

He was embarrassed of me. The realization sank into my stomach like a lead weight. For ten years, my "hobby" had paid his tuition, his rent, and the very suit he was wearing to impress this woman.

The car ride back to our shared apartment was suffocatingly silent. The streetlights strobed across Nathaniel’s rigid jawline. When we finally stepped inside the apartment, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind us, I couldn't take the distance anymore.

"Nate," I whispered, reaching out to gently grasp his hand.

He flinched. He didn't just pull away; he physically wrenched his arm from my grip, taking a large step back. His upper lip curled in unmistakable disgust.

"Don't," he snapped, his voice echoing off the hardwood floors. "Just... don't touch me, Savannah."

I froze, my hand hovering in the empty space between us. "What is wrong with you tonight?"

"What is wrong with me?" He let out a harsh, mocking breath. "Look at yourself. Look at this! I am a Vice President at a top-tier financial firm now. And you? You constantly smell of motor oil and soldering rosin."

My lungs seized. The scent he used to call my 'perfume' when we were broke and surviving on ramen was now a stench to him.

"I paid for that degree," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, trembling quiet.

"And I'm grateful, okay?" he shot back, though his eyes held nothing but contempt. "But things have changed. Kylee is right. Your yard is a humiliating liability. If we are going to get married, you need to quit. Sell the yard. Find a normal desk job. I cannot have my future wife hauling garbage like a scavenger."

He turned his back on me, walking toward the master bedroom. He left me standing in the dark, the faint smell of ozone and rosin clinging to my skin—the only authentic thing left in this apartment.
