Chapter 2

Freya POV

They say a plea born out of anger and desperation is more dangerous than the mate bond…

“Please,” I pleaded silently to the moon goddess. “Let me make this right".

Then darkness.

With a gasp, my eyes flew open. I bolted upright, as my hands flew instinctively to my belly – it was flat… empty. This wasn’t the dungeon neither was it the room with the pit. This was… my bedroom?

My gaze fell upon the full-length mirror across the room and I staggered to my feet in shock.

The woman staring back at me wasn’t battered, malnourished nor had scars from trying to fight the rogue wolves. This was me – Freya. My long golden hair gleamed in the sunlight; my eyes were bright with life… I was fine.

“Impossible,” I whispered touching my reflection with trembling fingers. Did the moon goddess really hear my plea? Did she grant me a second chance?

A knock at the door startled me from my reverie before the door opened and Amelia my Beta came in smiling.

“Luan? You’re not ready yet?” she sighed, giving me a fond look then crossed the room to my wardrobe. “Alpha Rowan’s war party has arrived the pack, they’re currently heading to the great hall we need to get you dolled up and beautiful for the Alpha".

My breath caught in my throat. The war party. Rowan’s return. Amara.

It all came rushing back – this was the day that had set everything in motion. The day Rowan had brought home that witch who would kill me.

“Luna?” Amelia called out again “Are you listening to me? Is everything alright?”

Unable to stop myself, I rushed towards her enveloping her in a hug. “I’m so glad you’re here,” I whispered. “This changes everything".

Amelia was surprised by my sudden endearment but she didn’t ask any questions. As I dressed, my mind raced. The moon goddess had granted my wish. I’d been given a second chance, taken back to the moment everything changed.

This time, I would fight back.

The great hall was filled with every member of our pack, excitement coating the air. Everyone was happy while I stood at the raised platform, a perfect picture of a devoted Luna waiting for my mate to return but underneath, my wolf snarled and paced… she couldn’t wait to get her revenge but the moon goddess didn’t give me a second chance to act unruly. I had an advantage - I’ve lived this life before. So, it’ll be easy for me.

The doors finally swung open and Rowan strode in with the soldiers that had gone with him to the battlefield. The hall erupted with loud cheering as everyone tried to touch them… to get a piece of our brave soldiers that had fought for three months.

My heart clenched painfully as I caught sight of my mate. He was magnificent – powerful, confident, his red hair whipped in the wind as he turned to smile and wave at the people For a moment, my resolve wavered. How could I have lost this man’s love? How in the moon did he abandon me to suffer and die?

But then, I saw her. Walking just behind Rowan. Her steps were awkward and tentative. The picture of innocence. I could see people staring at her – enthralled by her beauty. The witch’s beauty was as breathtaking as I remembered – long raven hair, emerald eyes that seemed to glow and a body that drew the eyes of every male currently even though she was clad in rags.

“My love,” Rowan said as soon as he came closer. “I’ve missed you,” he said bending down to plant a kiss on my lips.

“And I, you,” I steeled myself, plastering on a warm smile.

Then he turned and faced the people.

“My pack, my family… we return victorious! The rogue threat has been eliminated and our borders are secure once more".

The crowd erupted with cheers but I remained silent, my eyes still fixed on Amara. The witch stood quietly; her posture humble but I could practically see the calculating gleam in her eyes.

“But our victory came at a cost,” Rowan continued, his tone growing sombre. “In the strongholds of the rogue, we discovered dark, ancient magic that threatened not just our pack but all werewolves".

Murmurs of concern passed through the crowd but I turned to Rowan, surprised. This was new – in my previous life, he had never mentioned any magical threat.

“Fortunately,” he said gesturing to Amara, whose hands he took and drew her close to him “We found an ally. This is Amara she’s a healer of great power and knowledge. She risked her life to help us destroy that evil magic and now, she needs a place to lay her head and fire to keep her warm at night".

Amara stepped forward, her eyes downcast in a perfect picture of humility.

“Alpha Blackthorn and his soldiers saved my life,” her voice shook as she spoke “I only wish to repay the debt by offering my services to this pack. I hope you all can accept me as one of your own".

I watched as everyone nodded in approval already swayed by Amara’s performance. But I could see through her act.

As Rowan turned to me, a pleading look in his eyes, I knew this was the moment that had sealed my fate before. In my previous life, I had been blinded by her beauty and feared that she could seduce Rowan and steal his love. I had lashed out and refused.

The crowd had booed at me and the pack elders and officials had thought I was insensitive and ungrateful. That was when the strong dislike for me started.

This time would be different.

I stepped forward, a serene smile on my face.

“On behalf of Silverfang Pack, I welcome you, Amara. Your bravery and your skills will be a great asset to us all and I promise to make sure you’re paid back in ten folds everything you’ve done for us and everything you will do".

It was a threat and she knew it because her smile faltered, confusion flickered through her features but before she could react, I had already turned away, instructing the servants.

This was just the beginning. I would do everything in my power to save my pack, my mate and my unborn pups.

And when the time came, Amara would pay for everything she had done – in blood.
