Chapter 6

I tried to throw a punch, but my body was a canvas of bruises and welts. My wolf snarled somewhere beneath my skin, desperate to rise, but she was too weak to surface. I was no match for Vesper.

In an instant, she had me pinned to the cold marble floor.

She stepped on my chest, the sharp heel of her stiletto pressing into my sternum, and leaned down until her lips brushed the shell of my ear. Her scent flooded over me, candied jasmine layered over something faintly rotten, threaded with cold wolfsbane that made my wolf recoil and gag, all of it mixing with the metallic taste of blood in my mouth.

"If you insist on being disobedient, I'll make sure you learn your lesson." Her whisper was silk wrapped around a razor. "Your father died in that silver-warded hellhole because of you. Don't forget that."

I struggled beneath her weight and raked my nails across her ankle, leaving a deep crimson scratch that would scar. For a heartbeat my fingers burned with the urge to lengthen into claws, but my battered body couldn't answer the call.

Footsteps approached from the corridor. Sensing Dorian about to emerge from the study, Vesper immediately clutched her forehead and let herself collapse onto the floor as if she had been shoved, a performance worthy of the old packs' moon-rite theater.

Dorian saw her fall, and the crystal tumbler in his hand shattered against the obsidian floor with a sharp crack that tore through the silence like a hunter's shot.

He rushed toward us, the air thickening with the force of his Alpha aura, his fury twisting his features into something monstrous, the face of the wolf who would one day inherit a bloodline built on blood and silence. His scent flared, scorched oak and tarnished copper gone sour with rage.

"Seraphina! How dare you touch Vesper? Can you afford to compensate for the pup she's carrying? You and your father's lives wouldn't be enough to pay that debt!"

He charged forward, grabbed my shoulders with hands that had never known an honest patrol, and shoved.

I was thrown hard, my back slamming into the sharp corner of the marble entryway like a sledgehammer striking flesh. The impact reverberated through my spine, through my ribs, through every nerve ending that still functioned.

Pain exploded in my chest. My vision went black at the edges, then consumed everything. I staggered, then collapsed onto the cold stone.

I heard Dorian's hysterical roaring, the voice of a wolf who believed himself untouchable. I heard Vesper's theatrical sobs, calculated to perfection. And beneath it all, the murmurs of the pack-servants who knew better than to step into bloodline matters.

The noises tangled together, stabbing into my ears like countless needles dipped in wolfsbane.

I tried to push myself up, but my body refused to obey. My limbs had become foreign things, heavy and unresponsive. Even my wolf had gone quiet, her keening fading beneath the dark.

My consciousness cracked open like thin ice, leaking away rapidly into the darkness below.

In the last moment before everything went black, I saw Dorian glaring at me with that familiar frown of disgust, yet still holding Vesper protectively against his chest, terrified that his precious mistress might be startled.

Then the darkness swallowed me completely.

When I opened my eyes again, the first thing that hit me was the sharp smell of healing-herbs, that particular sting of crushed yarrow and antiseptic salve that clings to the walls of a healer-clinic like a second skin.

The white ceiling swayed slightly in my vision, the moon-lamps humming their monotonous song. I tried to move my fingers, but they felt weighed down by something heavy, as if silver chains had been fastened to my wrists while I slept.

The curtain was pulled aside with a metallic whisper. A pack-healer stepped to the bedside, his expression carefully neutral, the face of a wolf who had learned to deliver bad news without flinching.

"You're awake?"

I nodded. My throat burned as if scraped raw by broken glass.

The healer sighed, speaking as gently as the circumstances allowed.

"Seraphina, when you were brought in, you were bleeding heavily."

My heart clenched like a fist closing around itself, but I forced myself to ask, "So…?"

He paused for a moment, his eyes meeting mine with something that might have been compassion in another life.

"The pup is gone."

My breathing caught in my chest, trapped there like a bird in a cage. Deep inside me, my wolf made a sound I had never heard her make before, a low broken keening that had no name.

"The pup…?"

I repeated softly, as though confirming something I had never imagined, a word from a language I didn't know I spoke.

The healer continued, his voice measured and clinical. "You had carried barely three weeks. It was too early for the heat-bond to be felt without testing. But your injuries were severe, and the unborn pup couldn't continue. We have already done what had to be done."

My fingertips slowly turned cold, the blood retreating from my extremities as if my body itself was trying to disappear.

So I had been pup-bearing.

In the middle of their blows, their insults, all the despair that had become my daily bread, I had been carrying a tiny life. A small flame flickering in the darkness of that gilded den they called a mating.

And now he was gone.

Because of their push.

Because of their violence.

Because of their cruelty.

A pup of the Valecrest bloodline, extinguished before he could draw his first breath, not by an enemy pack, not by a rival Alpha, but by the very bloodline that should have sheltered him.

Seeing me silent, the healer added in a low voice, "Your injuries came from an assault. We have recorded the scent-marks according to protocol. Once your condition stabilizes, you'll need to give your account to the Council trackers."

I closed my eyes. My chest felt as if it had been torn apart and reassembled wrong, every breath a reminder of what had been taken.

Images flashed through my mind: Dorian's indifferent shove, delivered with the casual brutality of a wolf who had never faced consequences. Vesper's triumphant smile, painted in that shade of red she favored. Her words about letting the old warden die behind silver, spoken with the certainty of someone who believed she had already won.

Each memory cut like a blade drawn slowly across skin.

The pup was gone.

And the mating I had fought so hard to hold together, the blood-oath bond I had honored despite everything, the vows I had kept while they were broken against me, collapsed completely in that moment. It crumbled to dust, and from that dust, something else began to rise.

Something cold. Something patient. Something that had learned to wait in the shadows, the way my wolf now lay still and watchful behind my ribs, no longer keening, simply waiting.

I opened my eyes. My voice was cold as a winter solstice night in the old territories, where the wind carried the howls of those who had crossed the wrong bloodline.

"There's no need to continue with the tracker's report. Please help me preserve all healing records, emergency scrolls, and surgical accounts. Every page. Every seal. Every mark of the hour."

The healer paused, surprised by the steel that had entered my tone.

"Of course, but you need rest."

"Don't worry." My words were calm, yet so firm they allowed no refusal, the voice of a she-wolf who had finally understood that in this world, mercy was a luxury she could no longer afford. "I know exactly what I need."

The healer could only nod and leave, the curtain falling closed behind him like the final act of a tragedy.

But this was not the end.

This was the beginning.
