Chapter 7

After a while, the door to the healer-clinic den swung open.

Dorian walked in. The razor's edge that usually lived behind his eyes had been carefully sheathed, replaced with something that almost resembled tenderness. His presence drained the warmth from the room like blood circling a drain, and the scent of scorched oak and tarnished copper rolled in ahead of him, soured at the edges.

"Seraphina, I know you're still angry about what happened yesterday, but I truly had no choice. Vesper was badly hurt. And your own wounds haven't healed yet. Please, don't make things harder for me, alright?"

His voice was soft enough to drip with honey, the tone an Alpha uses when coaxing a pup who doesn't understand the way the world really works.

That gentleness was something he offered to everyone.

Everyone except me.

His performance drew a laugh from my throat, cold, hollow, scraping against the sterile air like a blade across bone.

"Relax. I won't delay tomorrow's statement to the pack."

The sarcasm in my voice stripped the softness from his face like varnish peeling from rotten wood.

"Seraphina," he snapped, "stop being childish. You're the one at fault. If you hadn't harmed the pup in Vesper's belly, I wouldn't have laid a finger on you. Everything that happened to you was your own doing."

He shoved every sin onto my shoulders as if it were the most natural thing in the world, as if the Valecrest name gave him the right to rewrite truth itself.

That kind of cruelty chilled the marrow. Somewhere beneath my skin, my wolf went very still, the way a creature does when it finally understands it is alone in the snow.

I opened my mouth, wanting to tell him about the pup I had lost, our pup, the one whose blood had stained the den's stone floor while he was busy playing protector to his false Luna, but someone interrupted.

Vesper burst in like a frightened rabbit flushed from its warren, throwing herself into his arms. Candied jasmine washed over the room, and underneath it, that faint thread of rot and cold wolfsbane.

"Dorian, where did you go? I woke up and didn't see you, I thought you didn't want me anymore. I dreamed about yesterday… I dreamed those rogues came after me again…"

Her voice trembled with every syllable, tears streaming like she'd rehearsed them before a still pool. Perhaps she had.

Dorian bent over her protectively, soothing her as if she were the most precious treasure the bloodline had ever claimed, more valuable than the border passes, the hunting grounds, the supply-routes that bore our name.

When she finally calmed enough to stop her theatrical shaking, his eyes turned sharp and vicious as they found me.

"Look at what you did! Vesper nearly died because of you!"

I couldn't stop the laugh again, the sound slicing through the room like a stiletto through silk.

Seeing that I didn't respond, Vesper suddenly let out a shrill cry.

"Seraphina, is it not enough that I'm leaving? Please don't hurt me or the pup anymore… I never should have made you angry…"

She even tried to kneel by my cot, her pitiful act so perfectly calibrated it was almost enough to make Dorian crumble at her feet like an Alpha who'd forgotten what real power looked like.

I remained expressionless.

I simply watched their performance with the cold amusement of someone who had finally learned to see the strings.

Dorian finally lost his patience. The air thickened with the pressure of his aura, and every lower wolf in the clinic would have dropped their gaze. I did not.

"Seraphina, you still refuse to admit your mistakes. Stay here and reflect. After the gathering, I'll reconsider our bond. The Valecrest bloodline does not need a heartless she-wolf wearing its name."

With that, he guided Vesper out without looking back, his hand pressed possessively against the small of her back, steering her like she was something precious instead of the poison she truly was.

Just before disappearing from view, Vesper cast a glance over her shoulder. Her eyes gleamed with arrogance and triumph, the message as clear as if she'd spoken it aloud.

This time, I won.

I didn't even bother watching them leave. I simply reached out and shut the door, the click of the latch echoing like the cocking of a hammer.

The next morning, I began executing my plan.

There were three hours left until the Valecrest Pack Gala, the public face they showed to the Council elders, to the neighboring bloodlines, to the lesser wolves who believed the name meant nothing more than old blood and honest tribute.

In three hours, their carefully constructed empire would begin its freefall.

Every resource, every silent alliance, every bond I had once placed into Dorian's hands through my own connections and my father's legacy, I would take back without hesitation.

For every wound they had given me, I would repay them with what they valued most: their standing, their rank, their carefully hoarded power.

I severed the mind-link threads to both Dorian and Vesper, then climbed into the black obsidian carriage where Kael waited, his jaw set like granite, his eyes scanning the treeline with the vigilance of a wolf who understood that the war had already begun. Black cedar and rain-soaked pine grounded the cabin, steady where everything else had come apart.

I could hardly wait to watch the grand celebration they had ignited with their own hands transform into the very fire that would devour them.

Their fall was only the beginning.
