Our Wedding Photographer Hid His Best Friend's Kiss Novel Cover

Our Wedding Photographer Hid His Best Friend's Kiss

Maya believed she'd lived a flawless decade as Evan Hart's wife, until the day she hired wedding photographer Cole Mercer to document her divorce, not revisit their vows. Cole has guarded a secret memory card since that ceremony—evidence that Evan kissed another woman at 3:17 p.m. behind the velvet curtain. That woman was Cole's sister. Now Evan pressures Maya to stay quiet while Cole pleads for her confidence, and Cole's girlfriend is paid to paint Maya as unstable before the photo emerges. Maya can forgive accidental hurt, but never someone who chooses her suffering because it's cheaper than facing the truth.

Chapter 2

Audrey's POV

"Are you going to load it, or keep staring at the plastic?" Cole asked.

He pushed a silver card reader across the scarred worktable. The metal scraped against the grain and stopped beside my hand.

The SD-14 should have weighed nothing. Instead, it felt heavier than the divorce agreement in my suitcase. I searched Cole's face for some warning, some sign that this was one more carefully managed version of the truth.

He gave me none.

I shoved the card into the reader.

The studio monitor flickered. A single folder appeared, dated ten years earlier. Inside were twenty-three image files, all shot within twelve minutes of one another.

I opened the first.

The timestamp read 3:17 p.m.

At that exact hour on my wedding day, I had been in the bridal suite rehearsing vows while a makeup artist pinned my veil. Behind the maroon velvet curtain in the adjoining hall, Evan stood with a young woman trapped between his body and the wall. One hand was twisted in her hair. His mouth covered hers. A silver star pendant flashed at her throat.

For several seconds, I heard nothing except the electrical hum of the monitor.

I unplugged the reader and connected it again. The same image returned.

"Why didn't you tell me?" My voice came out rough. "Before I walked down the aisle. Before I signed anything."

Cole braced both hands on the table. "I was twenty-six. Evan's family had lawyers in the chapel before the florist finished unloading."

"You were his best friend." I pointed at the screen. "He trusted you enough to photograph his wedding. I trusted you because he did."

"I know."

"Who is she?"

Cole's eyes fixed on the pendant. "Lila Mercer. My sister. She had just turned twenty-one."

The room tilted.

My arm moved before I decided what I wanted. I swung my hand toward his face, but stopped a breath from his jaw. Heat radiated from his skin. I wanted to strike him. I wanted to grab his shirt and force him to feel one honest thing with me. Both impulses frightened me.

I lowered my hand.

"Open the next file," I said.

Cole did not touch the mouse. "Audrey—"

"You kept them for ten years. You can look at them now."

I clicked through the sequence.

In the second frame, Lila's palms were pressed against Evan's chest. In the third, her face had turned away while his fingers closed around her wrist. By the fifth, she was crying. Evan looked directly toward the camera, not startled, but furious at being witnessed.

The sixth image was blurred because Cole had moved.

"You confronted him," I said.

"I crossed the hall and pulled him away from her. He told me she had followed him behind the curtain and kissed him first. Then he showed me copies of her clinic records on his phone."

I looked at Lila's terrified face on the monitor. "How did he get them?"

"He said the Hart Foundation funded the clinic. He threatened to release everything if I made a scene. Diagnosis, treatment notes, admissions. He had a statement ready that called her an obsessed patient who had targeted the groom."

"And you believed he would do it."

"I knew he would."

I moved to the final photograph. The curtain had fallen half closed. Lila was gone. Evan stood alone, straightening his tie as if nothing had happened.

"What did you tell me that day?" I asked.

Cole's mouth tightened. "That the delay before the ceremony was caused by a lighting problem."

I remembered him appearing at the bridal suite door, pale and breathless, while Evan's mother complained that the guests were waiting. I had laughed and told Cole perfection always took time.

My stomach twisted.

"You let me marry him twenty minutes later."

Cole looked past me toward the darkroom door. "Evan and I had been friends since freshman year. I had seen him lie to professors, donors, girlfriends. I thought I knew the line he would not cross. That afternoon, I learned there wasn't one."

"And you still stood beside him during the ceremony."

"I stood behind the camera because Lila was locked in the restroom with a nurse, begging me not to ruin her life. Every time you looked toward me, I thought I would stop the wedding. Then the music started, and I failed you again with every step you took."

"Lila was barely stable. She begged me not to expose the photographs. I chose my sister."

"You also chose Evan's version of what I could survive."

He accepted that without argument. The silence between us felt different now—not defensive, but guilty.

I removed the card and set it on the table. "Does anyone else know this exists?"

"Vanessa knows I kept an old card from the wedding. She doesn't know what is on it."

Vanessa Reed. Evan's crisis manager. Cole's girlfriend.

A bitter laugh escaped me. "You told the woman paid to protect him that you had hidden evidence from my wedding?"

"I told her before I knew she was working directly with Evan on the divorce response."

"That is not better."

The knowledge rearranged the room. Vanessa had access to Evan's strategy, Cole's studio, and the existence of a missing card. Whether she knew the image or not, she already knew where to search if Evan decided the evidence had to disappear.

Cole looked toward the shattered frame. "No. It isn't."

My phone lit up on the table. An invitation filled the screen: the Evan Hart Foundation's tenth-anniversary gala, beginning in two hours. The message beneath it was from Evan.

Come home before you embarrass yourself in public.

I turned the monitor back toward the first image. "Print this."

Cole's gaze sharpened. "Lila's face cannot go to the press."

"I am not going after your sister. I am going after the man who made both of us protect him."

He started to object, then stopped. For once, he did not tell me what to do.

The printer hummed. A glossy sheet emerged, carrying the velvet curtain, Evan's hand, and the silver star at Lila's throat.

I slid the photograph into my evening clutch.

"Audrey," Cole said as I reached the door. "If you confront him tonight, he will come for your gallery, your reputation, and Lila's records."

I looked back at the man who had spent ten years preserving proof and calling it protection.

"Then tonight," I said, "he learns I am done being the easiest person to sacrifice."
