Our Wedding Photographer Hid His Best Friend's Kiss

Maya believed she'd lived a flawless decade as Evan Hart's wife, until the day she hired wedding photographer Cole Mercer to document her divorce, not revisit their vows. Cole has guarded a secret memory card since that ceremony—evidence that Evan kissed another woman at 3:17 p.m. behind the velvet curtain. That woman was Cole's sister. Now Evan pressures Maya to stay quiet while Cole pleads for her confidence, and Cole's girlfriend is paid to paint Maya as unstable before the photo emerges. Maya can forgive accidental hurt, but never someone who chooses her suffering because it's cheaper than facing the truth.

Chapter 3

Audrey's POV

The gold lettering on the sign-in board spelled out Evan Hart Foundation: A Decade of Excellence.

I picked up the brass pen resting on the registration table. The metal felt cold against my skin. I pressed the nib into the thick parchment paper, dragging a thick line straight through his surname. Next to the ruined ink, I wrote Audrey Lane.

"You are drawing a lot of attention to yourself, Audrey."

Evan materialized beside the table. He adjusted the cuffs of his tailored tuxedo, his movements smooth and practiced. He offered his signature smile to a passing donor, nodding politely before dropping his voice to a cold whisper.

"Do not ruin this night," he warned, stepping closer so only I could hear. "You know how important this funding is to the board."

I ignored his warning. My attention drifted to the towering projection wall behind him. A muted video of our wedding reception played on a continuous loop, casting a soft white glow over the wealthy attendees.

Those same moving images used to sit in twenty-seven silver frames across our townhouse. Six months ago, I dragged a pen across a nineteen-page divorce agreement. I left that house with nothing but a black suitcase full of useless film negatives.

"I am not here to impress the donors," I told him. I dropped the brass pen onto the table. It landed with a clatter.

My fingers tightened around my evening clutch. Inside, the glossy photo paper burned against the silk lining.

"Then why are you here?" Evan asked. "You secured the settlement. You got the gallery. Go home, Audrey. Let me do my job."

He treated me exactly the way he had for a decade. A proper wife to be managed. A problem to be handled quietly.

I turned away from the registration desk and walked toward the VIP alcove.

Evan followed immediately, his long strides easily matching my pace. We stopped near the side exit. A row of heavy, deep blue velvet curtains blocked the service hallway from the main floor.

I stopped and stared at the fabric. The rich, dark blue matched the exact shade of the drapery in the bridal suite antechamber ten years ago.

"Are you listening to me?" Evan demanded, his patience fracturing.

I unclasped my purse. I reached inside and pulled out the photograph Cole printed for me two hours ago. I shoved the paper directly into Evan's chest.

He caught it before it hit the floor. His eyes darted across the image. He saw his younger self pinning a woman against the wall. He saw his own mouth open against hers, his hands tangled in her hair.

He did not flinch. He did not pale.

"Look at the bottom right corner," I instructed. My voice echoed slightly in the empty alcove. "Read the timestamp out loud, Evan."

He handed the photo back to me. He smoothed a non-existent wrinkle from his lapel.

"A ten-year-old misunderstanding won't cure your current loneliness, Audrey," he said, his tone even.

He spoke my name like an appraisal on a worthless antique.

"A misunderstanding?" I held the photo up, forcing it back into his line of sight. "Your hands are buried in her hair twenty minutes before you stood at the altar and promised me your entire life. Who is she?"

Evan ignored the question. His gaze shifted over my shoulder, fixing on something behind me.

I turned around.

Cole Mercer stood at the edge of the velvet curtains. Once Evan's closest friend, he now looked like a witness arriving too late. Rainwater dripped from the hem of his black wool coat, soaking into the expensive carpet. His jaw remained locked tight. His dark eyes fixed entirely on the photo in my hand.

"Mr. Mercer," a crisp feminine voice interrupted. "You are supposed to be at the press staging area."

Vanessa Reed stepped out from the shadows of Evan's side. She wore a sleek emerald gown and carried a leather portfolio. Pinned to the strap of her dress was a tiny, silver camera-shaped brooch.

My stomach dropped.

Cole bought that brooch at a vintage market three years ago. I remembered him talking about it at the gallery. Cole's current girlfriend worked for my husband.

Vanessa pulled a crisp sheet of paper from her portfolio. She held it out to me, her expression a mask of professional sympathy.

"Audrey, we prepared a statement for the morning papers," Vanessa said. "It frames tonight's outburst as an emotional misinterpretation following an amicable divorce. All you have to do is go home, and we will handle the press."

I stared at the typed headline. She wanted to paint me as the unstable ex-wife. She wanted to bury the truth under corporate PR spin while wearing Cole's jewelry.

"You wrote a press release for a photo you haven't even seen?" I asked her.

"I protect Evan's public image," Vanessa replied smoothly. "That includes managing collateral damage."

A sudden flash of white light blinded me.

A freelance photographer had slipped past the velvet ropes. His camera lens pointed directly at the glossy photo still gripped in my fist.

"Give me that," Evan ordered, dropping the polite facade entirely.

He lunged forward, his hand swiping for the paper.

Cole moved faster. He stepped between us, his broad shoulders blocking Evan's reach. The wet wool of his coat brushed against my bare arm, sending a shock of cold against my skin.

"Back off, Hart," Cole warned. His voice dropped to a low warning.

"This is a private event," Evan snapped, glaring at Cole. "Security will escort both of you out right now."

"Not before I get an answer." I stepped around Cole. I held the photo up high so the lingering reporters near the alcove could see the edges.

The ambient music abruptly cut out. A expectant silence crashed over the room.

I locked eyes with Evan. "Is she Lila Mercer?"

Three reporters at the nearest cocktail table stopped talking entirely. They turned toward us, their digital recorders already rising in their hands.

Cole flinched. He did not look at Evan. He looked down at my hands. His eyes widened with raw panic. He feared I would tear the photo, and he feared I would show the face of his sister to the entire room.

Vanessa did not miss a beat. She pulled her phone from her pocket and tapped the screen. A red recording dot appeared on her display. She tilted the microphone toward my face and offered a perfectly rehearsed smile.

"Are you willing to take legal responsibility for that accusation, Audrey?" she asked.

The blue velvet curtain parted, and Evan's lead counsel stepped out into the harsh light.
