Our Wedding Photographer Hid His Best Friend's Kiss

8.6 / 10.0
Ten years of playing the ideal wife, and she's finally ready to cut Evan Hart out of her life—one sharp divorce portrait at a time. But photographer Cole Mercer carries a buried truth from her wedding day: a memory card capturing Evan's kiss with another woman at 3:17 p.m. That woman is Cole's sister. When Evan offers cash to bury the footage, Cole instead offers her dangerous trust, even as his girlfriend wages a campaign to paint her as unstable. She can forgive accidents, but never a man who chooses her pain because it's cheaper.

Our Wedding Photographer Hid His Best Friend's Kiss Chapter 1

Audrey's POV

"How do you want to light the first shot?" Cole Mercer asked.

His hand hovered over the camera controls, casting a narrow shadow across the studio floor. Ten years earlier, he had been Evan Hart's closest friend and the photographer at our wedding. Today, he watched me unzip the black suitcase I had dragged from the Hart townhouse as though he already knew it contained an explosive.

The zipper snagged. I pulled harder, tearing the lining and exposing a stack of old negatives, a nineteen-page divorce agreement, and the silver frame that had occupied the center of our foyer for a decade.

I hauled the frame out and dropped it onto the white backdrop. The impact echoed through the brick studio.

Behind the glass, a twenty-four-year-old version of me smiled beneath an ivory veil. Society pages had called my marriage to Evan the season's perfect union. They said I had married into influence, as if my own work, my gallery contacts, and the inheritance I poured into his foundation had been decorative details.

"We are not shooting a divorce memorial," I said, kicking the suitcase aside. "Treat it like a funeral portrait."

Cole lowered his hand. His dark gaze moved from the frame to the circles beneath my eyes.

"A funeral requires a body, Audrey."

"The marriage is the body. Shoot it."

He crossed his arms over his flannel shirt. "You want me to photograph a ten-year-old picture of you smiling at a man you're trying to destroy."

"I want the exact moment I stop pretending." I looked down at the younger woman in the photograph. "Evan thinks I hired you because you shot the wedding and I want to drown in nostalgia."

"Why did you hire me?"

"Because you stopped being his friend before anyone else did." I met his eyes. "And because you won't ask me to smile."

The studio buzzer blared before he could answer.

Evan's assistant entered carrying an enormous bouquet of white roses. He set them on a posing stool and placed a small cream envelope on the petals.

"Mr. Hart sent these," he said. "He suggests you go home, Mrs. Hart."

"Do not call me that."

The assistant gave me a professional smile and left. The metal door slammed behind him.

Cole opened the envelope and read the card. A muscle jumped in his jaw before he handed it to me.

Don't photograph the last shred of dignity into pieces, Audrey.

Blank on the back. Evan always wrapped threats in good manners.

The studio lights caught the engraving along the bottom of the wedding frame: Mrs. Hart.

"Eight years ago, I pawned my grandmother's pearl earrings," I said.

Cole went still.

"I got twelve thousand dollars for them and handed every cent to the director of Evan's first foundation exhibition. Without that money, the opening would have collapsed and the press would have called him a fraud."

"I remember the exhibition," Cole said quietly. "The reviews praised his private funding."

"Exactly. And when the donor wall went up, my name wasn't on it. It said Mrs. Hart." I crushed Evan's card in my fist. "He erased me before the ink on our marriage license dried."

I picked up the roses. Thorns pierced my palms as I shoved the bouquet headfirst into the aluminum trash can. Stems snapped against the rim. White petals scattered across the concrete like scraps from a ruined veil.

"Point the lens at the frame," I said. "I want Evan to understand what I'm destroying. Not the marriage. His ownership of my name."

I gripped the cold metal frame and lifted it above my shoulder.

"Audrey." Cole stepped away from the tripod. "Put it down."

"Don't stop me."

I brought it down with everything I had.

The glass exploded across the backdrop. A shard skipped over the concrete and sliced my ankle. Blood appeared in a bright, clean line.

Before the last fragment stopped spinning, Cole caught my wrist and pulled me backward. My back struck his chest. His palm covered my pulse, and I smelled the metallic trace of darkroom chemicals on his shirt.

The smiling bride on the floor had been split into jagged pieces.

I looked up at him. "Are you only now learning to stop me from getting hurt?"

His grip loosened. His thumb brushed the inside of my wrist before he let go.

"This time, I saw it," he said. "I wasn't looking away."

The words landed harder than the broken glass.

He crouched beside my ankle and reached for the first-aid kit under the worktable. I nearly told him not to bother, but the cut was already leaving red drops across the white canvas. Cole pressed sterile gauze to it without touching more skin than necessary. His restraint was precise, almost punishing.

"Hold that," he said.

I took the gauze. He returned to the camera and raised it. The shutter clicked once, catching the broken portrait, the crushed roses, and my blood on the backdrop.

"Again," I said.

He changed the angle and took three more frames. In the preview, my younger face stared upward through fractured glass while the engraved title Mrs. Hart lay upside down beside it. For the first time all day, the pressure behind my ribs eased. The image did not make me look abandoned. It made the marriage look dead.

Cole studied the screen, but he did not offer comfort. "This is not the first photograph from your wedding that Evan tried to control."

I lowered the gauze. "What does that mean?"

Instead of answering, Cole crossed to a locked supply cabinet, took a brass key from his pocket, and opened the bottom drawer. From it, he removed a battered tin box.

He carried the box to the backdrop and lifted the lid.

Inside lay one old memory card.

"On your wedding day, I delivered six hundred and forty-two photographs to Evan's event coordinator," he said. "This file never reached them."

He held the card beneath the light. A faded label bore the date of our wedding and one handwritten code: SD-14.

My heartbeat shifted into a hard, uneven rhythm. "You kept a card from my wedding for ten years?"

Cole placed it in my palm. The plastic edge pressed into the small cuts left by the rose thorns.

"What is on it?"

He looked at the shattered portrait instead of me.

"What you should have seen before you walked down the aisle."
