Betrayal of the Luna Chapter 1

The acrid stench of smoke and ash clung to my nostrils as I picked through the charred remains of what had once been my home. The rogue attack had come without warning, a savage assault that had left the Sterling pack house in ruins. My fingers, blackened with soot, trembled as I sifted through debris, searching for anything salvageable, anything that might have survived the inferno.

My wolf, Lyra, whimpered softly within me. *Something feels wrong, Charlotte. This is more than just destruction.*

"I know," I whispered, though I couldn't articulate exactly what felt off. For three years, I'd believed this was my home, my territory as Luna to Alpha Marcus Sterling. I'd sent nearly every dollar I earned from my international architecture consulting work back to support our pack, our future. Yet as I stood amid the smoking ruins, I felt strangely... disconnected.

A flash of metal caught my eye beneath a fallen beam. Marcus's office safe, its door hanging open, partially melted but intact enough that some contents had survived. I knelt, ignoring the heat that seeped through my jeans, and reached inside.

My fingers closed around a leather folder, its edges singed but the contents protected. I pulled it free, brushing away ash and debris.

"What do we have here?" I murmured, opening it carefully.

Two certificates lay inside, their official gold seals gleaming in the weak sunlight that filtered through the smoke-filled air. Mate ceremony certificates. My heart stuttered as I examined the first one—my name alongside Marcus's, the date of our ceremony three years ago.

But something was wrong. The paper felt different, the seal slightly off-center. My fingers traced the embossed lettering, finding tiny imperfections that shouldn't exist on an official Lycan Council document.

With growing dread, I turned to the second certificate.

Victoria Sterling and Marcus Sterling.

The names burned into my vision like brands. Victoria—Marcus's adopted sister. The certificate was pristine, perfect, bearing not just the official seal but also the marking ceremony blood imprint that mine lacked.

My breath caught painfully in my chest. "No," I whispered, but Lyra growled low within me.

*We've been deceived.*

The world tilted sideways as I stared at the evidence of betrayal in my hands. Every tender word, every promise, every time Marcus had visited me abroad and told me how much the pack missed their Luna... lies. All of it, lies.

I clutched the certificates to my chest, my mind racing. I needed to confront him, to understand why—

*Wait,* Lyra cautioned. *We need more information. We need to be careful.*

She was right. If Marcus had maintained this deception for years, confronting him directly could be dangerous. I tucked the certificates into my jacket and continued my search, finding nothing else of value in the ruined office.

Three days later, we were settled in temporary quarters—a cluster of cabins at the edge of pack territory. I'd kept the certificates hidden, watching Marcus carefully, looking for signs, for cracks in his performance. He'd been solicitous, concerned about my welfare after the fire, but something in his eyes never quite matched his words.

That evening, restless and unable to sleep, I found myself walking the perimeter of our temporary housing. A light glowed from one of the cabins set slightly apart from the others. Marcus had claimed it as a temporary office, but as I approached, I heard voices.

I moved closer, silent as only a wolf can be, and peered through a gap in the curtains where the window was cracked open for air.

My heart stopped.

Marcus stood inside, his hands tenderly cradling Victoria's swollen belly. Her pregnancy was advanced—at least seven months along. His expression as he gazed at her was one I'd never seen before—raw, unguarded adoration.

"Our pup is strong," he murmured, pressing his lips to her forehead. "Just like his mother."

Victoria smiled up at him, a possessive gleam in her eyes. "And powerful, like his Alpha father."

As their lips met in a passionate kiss, I heard it—the unmistakable whisper of their wolves: *Mate.*

True mates. The real Luna of the Sterling Pack wasn't me. It had never been me.

I backed away, my hand pressed against my mouth to stifle the sob building in my throat. The certificates hadn't lied. My entire life was built on a foundation of ashes and deception.
