Chapter 23

Chapter 23: What the Survey Found

The northern boundary, it turned out, was three days north of her father's final survey point.

She found it the way her father had described finding boundaries: not as a line but as a quality change, a shift in the texture of the territory, the specific atmosphere of places where the mapped and unmapped worlds approached each other. Here, the trees grew differently—not wrong, but attentive, the way animals were attentive near something they couldn't name. Here, the light in the morning had a quality she didn't have existing notation for.

She invented notation.

Cassian watched her invent notation with an expression that she'd catalogued months ago as specific warmth and now read more precisely as: the look of someone watching someone else do what they were made to do.

"Your father's notation for the between-space influence was a double line," he said.

"I'm adding a third for proximity to the actual domain boundary." She looked at the territory around them. "The triple line means: here, the mapped world and the unmapped world are touching."

"That's very precise."

"The map should be accurate." She made the notation. "These are the places where people might feel the between-space without knowing what they're feeling. They should be able to look at the map and know: here is where the strangeness comes from."

He looked at the territory.

"No one has mapped this before," he said.

"I know." She surveyed the next section. "Do you mind?"

"Mind?"

"That I'm mapping it. That I'm—making it navigable. Putting it in the documented world." She looked at him. "It's yours, in some sense."

He was quiet for a moment.

"My father commissioned the mapping because he believed the territory deserved to be known," she said. "That the world deserved to be recorded. Not for anyone's use. Just—because it was real." She paused. "But I want to ask."

He looked at the territory—the attentive trees, the specific morning light, the place where his domain and the human world came closest.

"Record it," he said. "It should be known." A pause. "Accurately."

"Always," she said.

She finished the survey section. She made the notations. She recorded the boundary—triple-lined, careful, honest about where the certainty ended—in the field notebook that would eventually become the continuation of her father's atlas.

At the edge of the page she wrote: Here, accounts diverge. Both are true.

Then below: Survey completed.
