Chapter 24

Chapter 24: The Question at the Edge

They came back to Aravel on the last day of December.

The city was celebrating the year's end with the particular excess of a city that had survived something difficult and needed to demonstrate, loudly and with fire, that it had. The streets were lit. The canal district was bright with lanterns. The smells of the end-of-year markets—spiced things, warmed things, the specific smell of celebration—filled the cold air.

She went to the shop. She put the atlas on the desk—the completed atlas, the full survey, the triple-lined boundary and the honest notations and the three weeks of mapping and the continuation of her father's work.

She looked at it for a moment.

Then she looked up.

He was standing in the doorway of the back room.

"I need to ask you something," he said.

She waited.

"I want—" He stopped. Started again. "I've told you what I want. At the waystation. I said this specifically. I mean it." He paused. "But I want to ask formally. Not as a Fate asking a human. Not in the between-space, not at a crossroads. Here." He looked at the shop—the shelves, the atlas, the lamp. "Here, which is where we've been."

She looked at him.

"I want to continue knowing you," he said. "Not as a compact, not with a price, not as a mechanism for anything. Just—" He paused. "Just as what it is."

"Yes," she said.

He blinked.

"Yes," she said again. "With conditions."

Something in his expression moved—the specific quality she'd been watching for months and now knew clearly: relief and warmth and the slight wonder of a person who had been expecting resistance and had found something else.

"Name them," he said.

"You tell me things when they're relevant," she said. "Not just when I ask directly. You use your judgment about when something is important enough that I should know it." A pause. "No more structuring situations for me to arrive at conclusions you've already reached."

"Agreed," he said.

"You stop being superior about the river bed survey."

"The second survey's northern boundary is demonstrably—"

"Agreed," she said firmly.

He paused. "Agreed," he said.

"You accept that I am going to document everything," she said. "Including you. Including the vault and the bond and—everything. I'm a mapmaker's daughter. I record the territory as I find it."

He looked at her. Something in the expression—not discomfort, the opposite of discomfort. The expression of someone who has been told that the most honest possible record of them will be kept.

"All right," he said. "I have conditions too."

She raised an eyebrow.

"You stop pretending the northern survey is complete," he said. "The boundary territory continues north of your triple line. There are—things there worth mapping." A pause. "And you eat regularly. You forget."

"I don't forget."

"The commission for the canal district lasted six days during which you consumed—"

"Two conditions," she said. "That's enough."

He almost smiled. She had learned to read the almost-smiles months ago; they were the precursors to the real ones, which came less frequently but were, when they arrived, entirely unmistakable.

He crossed the room.

He held her face in both hands—careful and precise, the way he held things he didn't want to drop, and she felt through the bond the warmth that was no longer the ember, was no longer the tentative small thing in the cold room, was something that had been given time and oxygen and the specific ongoing choice to stay.

"Isla Vane," he said. "Cartographer. Mapmaker's daughter. Person who sat on the floor of the back room and made me want to be there too."

"Yes," she said, with considerable effort at equanimity.

"I've been in the world for three hundred years," he said. "I've watched a great deal of it end." A pause. "I'd rather watch this one begin."

She reached up and covered his hands with hers.

"Then look," she said.
