Chapter 2

Sofia shuffled the deck. Her hands moved quick and smooth. Professional. Like she'd done this a thousand times.

I watched her fingers. Watched the way the cards slid together. Watched Colby lean back in his chair, relaxed, like this was just another Tuesday night.

'Texas Hold'em,' Sofia said. 'Simple rules. You know how to play, right?'

I nodded. 'I've played before.'

A lie. I'd done more than play. But they didn't need to know that.

She dealt. Two cards each. I glanced at mine. Queen of hearts. Seven of clubs. Mediocre. I set them face down.

The flop came. King of spades. Ten of hearts. Four of diamonds.

Sofia bet first. Five thousand in chips. She pushed them forward with a little smile.

Colby touched his ear. Just once. Quick. Like he was scratching an itch.

I saw it. Registered it. Filed it away.

He folded.

I called.

The turn. Three of hearts.

Sofia bet again. Ten thousand this time. Her smile got wider.

I folded.

She raked in the chips. 'Aw, that's okay,' she said. 'First hand's always rough.'

I said nothing.

Second hand. Sofia dealt again. I got a pair of sixes. Low. But playable.

The flop. Ace of clubs. Six of spades. Nine of hearts.

Three of a kind. Strong.

Sofia bet. Fifteen thousand.

Colby adjusted his collar. Slow. Deliberate. Then he folded.

I raised. Twenty thousand.

Sofia's eyes flickered. Just for a second. Then she called.

The turn. King of spades.

She bet again. Thirty thousand.

I called.

The river. Two of diamonds.

Sofia pushed all her chips forward. 'All in,' she said.

I looked at my cards. At the board. At her face.

Then I looked at Colby. He was watching me. Waiting.

I folded.

Sofia laughed. A bright, happy sound. 'Oh, sweetie. You almost had it.'

She flipped her cards. Ace-king. Two pair.

I would have won.

But I folded anyway.

Because I was watching something else now. Something more important than cards.

I was watching them.

Third hand. My deal this time. I shuffled. Let the cards fall together. Dealt them out.

Colby got his two cards. Glanced at them. Touched his ear again.

Hearts.

I filed it away.

Fourth hand. He adjusted his collar.

Spades.

Fifth hand. He touched his watch.

Clubs.

Sixth hand. He straightened his cuffs.

Diamonds.

A system. Simple. Effective. And completely invisible to anyone who wasn't looking for it.

I kept my face soft. Kept my hands steady. Let them think I was just a woman who didn't know what she was doing. A woman who was in over her head.

Sofia got comfortable. Started talking.

'You know,' she said, dealing another hand, 'some people are just built for pressure. It's a personality thing. You can't really teach it.' She glanced at me. 'Some women are made for big lives. High stakes. Real decisions.' She smiled. 'And some women are made for… other things.'

I looked at my cards. Jack-ten. Suited.

'Like what?' I asked quietly.

Sofia shrugged. 'You know. Quiet lives. Safe lives. Cooking. Cleaning. Making a home.' She touched her belly. 'Raising babies.'

Colby said nothing. Just watched the table.

'Nothing wrong with that,' Sofia continued. 'The world needs those women too. The ones who stay small. Who stay safe.' She bet. 'But that's not me.'

I called.

The flop came. Queen. King. Ace. Rainbow.

Straight.

Sofia bet big. Fifty thousand.

Colby touched his ear. Then folded.

I raised. Seventy-five thousand.

Sofia called.

The turn. A brick. Four of clubs.

She checked.

I bet. One hundred thousand.

She folded.

I didn't show my cards. Just pulled the chips toward me.

Sofia's smile tightened. Just a little.

'Lucky hand,' she said.

I said nothing.

We played another hour. I lost most of it. Let the chips bleed away. Let Sofia's stack grow. Let Colby's signals keep feeding her information.

And I watched.

Every gesture. Every glance. Every touch.

By the time my chip stack was almost gone, I knew their system better than they did.

Sofia leaned forward. 'You know what? Let's make this interesting.' She pulled a folded paper from her purse. Set it on the table. 'Your Porsche. The Cayenne. Title for title. One hand.'

I looked at the paper. At the blank lines. At the pen she set down next to it.

The paper was already printed. Already prepared. The transfer language already written out.

She'd brought it with her.

This whole night—the game, the money, the setup—it was all planned. Every piece of it.

I felt something settle in my chest. Something cold and final.

I picked up the pen.

'One hand,' I said.

Sofia smiled. 'One hand.'

She dealt.

I lost.

Signed the paper.

Pushed it across the table.

Sofia folded it. Tucked it back in her purse. Patted it once.

'Don't worry,' she said. 'I'll take good care of it.'

Colby straightened his cuffs.

And I went very, very still.
