Chapter 3

Sofia gathered the chips. Stacked them. Her pile was huge now. Mine was almost gone.

She looked at Colby. He nodded once.

'Okay,' Sofia said. She leaned back. Touched her belly. 'Let's talk about something real.'

I waited.

'The apartment,' Colby said. His voice was flat. Empty. 'The penthouse. Three million. We put it on the table.'

I stared at him. 'What?'

'One hand,' he said. 'You win, you keep everything. You lose, it's hers.'

The penthouse. Our home. The nursery I'd painted last month. Pale yellow walls. The crib we'd assembled together. The room where I'd stood with my hand on my belly, imagining our future.

'Colby,' I said quietly. 'That's our home.'

He straightened his cuffs. 'It's equity. That's all it is.'

Sofia pulled another paper from her purse. Another pre-drafted document. Transfer of deed. Signature lines already highlighted.

She'd brought this one too.

She set it on the table. Set the pen on top of it.

'One hand,' she said. Her smile was bright. Warm. Like we were friends.

I looked at the paper. At the address printed at the top. At the blank line waiting for my name.

I picked up the pen.

Sofia dealt.

I got my cards. Looked at them. Eight-three offsuit. Garbage.

The flop came. King. Queen. Jack. All spades.

Colby touched his ear. Then his collar. Then his watch.

A full sequence. Strong hand.

Sofia bet. Fifty thousand.

I called.

The turn. Two of hearts.

She bet again. One hundred thousand.

I called.

The river. Five of diamonds.

Sofia pushed all her chips forward. 'All in.'

I looked at my cards. At the board. At her face.

Then I folded.

She flipped her cards. Ace-ten of spades. Royal flush.

I would have lost anyway.

I signed the paper. Pushed it across the table.

Sofia folded it carefully. Tucked it in her purse with the car title.

'Two down,' she said softly.

Colby said nothing. Just watched me. Waiting.

My chip stack was gone now. Completely empty. Nothing left.

I put my hands in my lap. Felt the baby move. A small flutter. A kick.

Sofia leaned forward. Her eyes were bright. Excited.

'One more,' she said. 'Let's make it count.'

I waited.

'If you lose the next hand,' she said slowly, 'you sign away all parental rights to your baby.' She touched her belly again. 'Colby and I raise the child. You disappear. Completely. Permanently. No contact. No custody. Nothing.'

The room went very quiet.

I could hear the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. The distant sound of traffic outside. My own heartbeat.

'No,' I whispered.

Sofia smiled. 'It's the only thing you have left to wager.'

I turned to Colby. He was watching me. His face was blank. Empty.

'Tell me you're not serious,' I said quietly.

He straightened his cuffs. Slow. Deliberate.

'I want this to be over, Raegan,' he said. His voice was flat. Cold. 'This marriage is done either way. At least this way, the kid has a real family.'

The Christmas tree lights blinked in the corner. Red. Green. Gold. Reflecting in the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city stretched out below us. Millions of lights. Millions of lives.

The dinner I'd made sat on the sideboard. Cold now. Untouched.

I put my hand on my belly. Felt the baby move again. A small, gentle push.

Six months. I'd carried this baby for six months. Painted the nursery. Assembled the crib. Read books about breastfeeding and sleep schedules. Imagined a future.

A real family, he'd said.

Like we weren't already one.

'You want me to gamble my baby,' I said. My voice sounded far away. Hollow.

'I want you to accept reality,' Colby said. 'You've already lost everything else. This is just the last piece.'

Sofia pulled another paper from her purse. Thicker this time. Legal language. Termination of parental rights. Signature lines. Witness lines. Notary stamp already affixed.

She'd had it prepared. Had it notarized. Had brought it with her tonight.

This whole thing—the game, the money, the apartment—it was all leading here. To this moment. To this paper.

She set it on the table. Set the pen on top.

'One hand,' she said softly. 'Win, and you keep your baby. Lose, and you walk away clean. No obligations. No ties. You can start over. Fresh.'

I looked at the paper. At my husband. At the woman carrying his other child.

At the Christmas tree blinking in the corner.

At the cold dinner.

At the candles that had burned down to nothing.

I went very, very still.

That stillness—the one Beckett would have recognized. The one that meant I'd made a decision. An irreversible one.

I reached for the cards.

'Deal,' I said.
