Chapter 3

I didn’t cry after the slap. Not because I wasn’t hurt. But because it was the last time I’d let either of them see me flinch. Pain sharpens the blade, and I’d been forged in fire long before Lara Hudson ever learned how to fake tears and seduce a married man.

I didn’t come back to reclaim a marriage; I came to burn down a dynasty. But love—real or rotten—has a way of leaving behind splinters. And Elliot… Elliot was a splinter I hadn’t pulled out yet. It happened two days later. A rooftop fundraiser for Hudson Corp’s clean energy initiative. The guest list was bloated with billionaires and snakes. The air, thick with champagne and hypocrisy.

I wore black again—this time silk. Like a shadow gliding between ghosts. Elliot was standing by the edge of the balcony, nursing a whiskey and staring into the city skyline like it held answers. When he noticed me, something flickered in his eyes.

Regret?

Remorse?

Longing?

“I didn’t expect you to come,” he said quietly.

“I wasn’t going to,” I replied, “but then I remembered you don’t do well when I’m not around.”

He gave a dry chuckle. “Still sharp.”

“Still dull,” I countered, narrowing my eyes into slits. There was a pause. The kind that only exists between people with a long history of love and war.

“You were always the better one,” he said eventually. “Smarter. Stronger. More ruthless than I ever gave you credit for.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Is this your version of an apology?”

He turned to face me fully, his voice low. “No. This is me saying… I was an idiot. And I still am.” The moment stretched thin, tight like the string of a violin before it breaks. “I don’t expect forgiveness,” he continued. “But I’ll say this—Isabella, I’m not done with you. Not even close.”

I narrowed my eyes even more. “What the hell does that mean?”

“It means I’m going to court you again,” he said, voice suddenly sure, full of the old charm that used to melt me. “Win you back. The right way.”

I let out a cold, disbelieving laugh. “You brought your mistress into our home. Pregnant. On our anniversary. And now you want to play Romeo?”

He stepped closer, trying to catch my gaze as he muttered, “She’s not you.”

“You’re right,” I said, stepping back. “She’s cheaper. And she came at a discount.”

Then I left him standing there—his jaw tight, his whiskey untouched, his ego finally cracking.

The days after the fundraiser blurred into strategy meetings, legal filings, and whispered warnings from people who used to pretend I didn’t exist. I was back, and they knew it. But it wasn’t boardrooms or press statements that rattled Lara.

It was Elliot. He started sending gifts. Subtle, at first. Then nostalgic. A silk scarf from Florence—the same boutique he’d taken me to on our second anniversary. A note in his familiar handwriting: “I still remember the scent you wore that night.”

I didn’t reply.

I didn’t need to.

Because that kind of attention, even when ignored, leaves a trail, and Lara followed it straight into a storm.

---

Wednesday Morning — 10:00 a.m.

I went to the corner café near the courthouse. The kind of place that brewed real espresso, not watered-down capitalism. I came for caffeine and calm before a closed-door meeting with two old Rivera allies who were now Hudson Corp board members.

But instead of serenity, I got Lara. Of all the people I could meet! She was already sitting there, lips painted like a threat, wearing a sleek white maternity dress and dark sunglasses—indoors. As if she thought the light couldn’t find her sins if she hid behind Chanel. She stood when she saw me, blocking the path to the counter.

“I was beginning to think we’d keep dancing around each other forever,” she said sweetly.

I didn’t break stride. “If I wanted to dance with snakes, I’d go to the zoo.”

“Oh, come now,” she said, moving to follow me. “Aren’t we past the name-calling? We’re both grown women. We should talk.”

I sighed. “Fine. Talk.”

Lara slid into the seat across from me without waiting for an invitation. “He’s trying to get you back,” she said bluntly.

I took a slow sip of my coffee. “Took you long enough to catch on.”

“He bought a bracelet,” she hissed. “Had it delivered to your old jeweler. Platinum. Engraved.”

I met her eyes. “Yes. And I threw it away.”

She leaned forward, her voice barely above a whisper. “Do you think that makes you noble? Untouchable? You think he wants you back? You’re just a challenge now. You walked away, and Elliot doesn’t like unfinished business.”

I set my cup down carefully. “No, Lara. You don’t understand him at all. Elliot doesn’t chase women—he chases control. And when he loses it, he spirals.”

Her jaw twitched. I smiled. Just a little. Enough to let her know I saw the crack beneath her perfect façade.

“You may be carrying his child,” I said evenly, “but I carried his empire when it was crumbling. You warmed his bed. I built his world.”

She laughed bitterly. “That world is mine now.”

“For now,” I said, voice smooth as glass. “Until he grows bored. Or finds another Lara with tighter skin and a looser conscience.”

She slapped the table—just softly enough not to draw attention, just hard enough to tremble the cups. “You think you’ll win?” she snapped.

I stood slowly, slid on my sunglasses, and adjusted my coat. “I’m not trying to win him back,” I said with a smile. “I’m just making sure you both lose everything you tried to steal.”

And then I left. Because silence, when weaponized correctly, speaks louder than rage. Later that night, a bouquet of lilies arrived at my door. No note. But I knew the message. He remembered my favorite flower.

Too late, Elliot...
