Chapter 4

Power doesn’t scream.

It whispers.

It moves dangerously in the dark...

Sits still long enough to let its enemies sink into false confidence, then strikes without warning. I’d spent years learning that. Watching Elliot play that game. Now, I played it better. But Lara... she wasn’t a strategist.

She was a flailing performer in silk and spray tan—desperate to hold center stage before the curtain closed. And her dark deeds started with a call.

“Miss Rivera,” the voice on the other end said, calm but shaken. “There’s been an incident. Lara Hudson claims you threatened her at a public café.”

I almost laughed. “Did she also claim I teleported into her womb and threatened the baby?”

“She’s filed a preliminary report. No charges yet. But... there’s talk.”

Of course there was. The game was escalating. Lara had realized she couldn’t win with charm, so she’d resorted to the next card in her desperate deck: The Victim.

That afternoon, I received a summons from the Hudson Corporation’s legal department: an urgent mediation meeting involving personal matters that may affect public perception of the executive board. Poor Elliot was panicking. Not because of the drama—he thrived on that—but because investors don’t like messy headlines.

And right now, I was the one with leverage and legacy, so I showed up. Dressed in navy. Hair sleek. Mind sharper than any knife. Lara was already seated when I walked in—face pale, eyes red, bump on full display like a badge of sainthood. Elliot stood near the window, jaw tight.

“You’re early,” I said smoothly, taking the chair across from her.

Lara sniffled. “Some of us value punctuality.”

“And some of us value facts,” I replied.

Elliot raised a hand. “Enough. Both of you. This isn’t a courtroom.”

“No,” I sternly shot back calmly, “because if it were, Lara would be held in contempt for wasting everyone’s time.”

He shot me a look. “Don’t push me.”

“I’m not pushing you, Elliot. I’m reminding you. I am still a shareholder. I am still the Rivera in the room. And she—” I looked directly at Lara, “—is just a guest playing house.”

Lara’s voice cracked like glass. “You have no idea what he tells me when you’re not around.”

“And you have no idea,” I replied, tone deadly, “what he tells me when you’re asleep.”

That silenced her.

Elliot exhaled, rubbing his temples. “I didn’t bring you both here to draw blood.”

I leaned back, pinning my gaze to Lara as I said, “Your mistress started it. She must taste the dose of her own medicine.”

---

The meeting ended in a while. It was a chaotic one, but across the town, the man I’d arranged to meet later that afternoon was already waiting at the high-end bar.

Adrian Black. A former Hudson Corp senior developer. Fired. Blacklisted. Silenced after a whistleblowing incident involving Elliot’s data fraud during an acquisition. We shook hands like two people pretending not to hate the same man.

“You said you wanted proof,” he said, sliding a flash drive across the table. “This is everything. Emails, financials, internal memos. They doctored data during the SilverCore acquisition.”

My lips curved slightly. “Perfect.”

Adrian took a sip of his drink. “Why now? Why you?”

I met his eyes. “Because I’m not here for justice.”

He blinked. “Then what?”

“Ruin,” I said softly. “Not just for Elliot. But for everyone who bet against me.”

And with that, our little agenda ended. I walked back to the car and found Marcus chillin’ through his playlist on Spotify. He drove me home, where I busied myself finding more evidence against my good-for-nothing ex-husband.

At exactly seven in the evening, I heard a knock on my door. I wasn’t expecting someone to come over tonight, least of all Elliot Hudson. He showed up at my door. No warning. Just him, in the hallway, eyes stormy and unreadable.

“What do you want?” I asked right away.

He stepped inside without asking for my permission and sat on the couch. I shot him with a lazy peer and walked toward the console table. “Why are you here, Elliot?”

“I told her to drop it,” he said, sighing.

“Oh, yeah? And yet she’s still crying to the press about ‘emotional endangerment.’ You need to keep your mistress on a tighter leash.”

“She’s scared,” he rebutted, scrubbing his hands on his face.

“She’s manipulative,” I shot back heatedly.

He looked at me—really looked. “You’re not the same woman I married.”

“No,” I whispered. “She died the night you let someone else into our bed.”

Silence.

And then, softer, he said, "I don’t want to lose you again, Issa.”

I walked past him, opening the door. “You lost me the moment you bet against me, Elliot. And unlike you, I don’t chase ghosts. Leave. Now.”
